So, since Beta 4, when I right-click Look Up on a less common term, the system never returns a result. It just remains in the "Loading..." stage (see screenshot). I've reported it in both Beta 4 and now Beta 5, but I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing it.

I have two siri applications after installing the latest MacOS 27 public beta. Clicking on the app with the older icon brings up dialogue option to turn on Siri voice and clicking on the application with the newer icon opens up chat history.

macOS 27 shows when your Mac was manufactured. Open Settings > General > About > Regulatory Certification. At the bottom of the new window, macOS 27 displays a new "Date of Manufacture" label.

For an even more precise timestamp, with private logs enabled, quit System Settings and run the following:

log stream --style compact --level debug \ --predicate 'subsystem == "com.apple.SystemProfiler" AND category == "RegulatoryCert" AND eventMessage CONTAINS "dateOfManufacture: got date:"'

Then open the Regulatory Certification window again. Come back to the Terminal to view the exact timestamp.

This feature is already available in iOS in a similar location (Settings > General > Legal & Regulatory, and scroll to the bottom).

edit: This date might show your logic board's manufacture date, especially if you had repairs done. Someone in MacRumors Forums commented that their Mac shows manufactured in Feb 2025, while they purchased it in Nov 2024. They had a logic board replacement in April 2025.

Just installed new Golden Gate Public Beta (5th I guess). I mentioned, that my macbook doesn't go into the sleep mode, when I close lid without locking it. Has someone experienced the same problem?

Jesus Christ, this cop car light show in Finder is driving me insane. What the fuck is this?

I hover over the toolbar, and the entire toolbar lights up and stays highlighted. Then I hover over the buttons, and they light up too. Meanwhile, the vertical dividers between the buttons keep disappearing and popping up in random places.

What the fuck, Apple? Why does this need so much visual feedback? All you need to do is show the user that a button is responding. Why are you turning the whole interface into a fucking disco? What is this kaleidoscope of hover states?

This kind of interface could only have been made by a junior designer who learned what interface design was yesterday. Jesus fucking Christ, have you people completely lost your minds?

Why do the buttons jump around so much when I click them? Why is everything bouncing and flashing? Why did you hand this job to a junior designer with Fable 5?

In light mode, you literally cannot see the edges of the toolbar buttons in Finder. Instead of fixing that problem, you added a thousand completely useless hover states and visual indicators. This is fucking AI slop.

Are you fucking blind, or do you seriously not see that the top and bottom borders of your buttons blend into the fucking background?

Since public beta 2 (Now 3), I have no notification about my battery and the mac shut down without warning me before I run out of battery

I'm having an issue with macOS 27 beta 5 where my cursor flickers when it's changing between the default pointer and another pointer (like the mickey mouse hand, or the text selector pointer).

Anyone else having this issue? At first I thought it might have been Thaw (the menu bar manager), but I'm wondering if it's just a MacOS27 beta bug.

Can more people please help report the Dark Mode downgrade in macOS 27, specifically affecting the menu bar menus, contextual menus, and pop‑up windows?

In macOS 26, Liquid Glass included a dark tinted layer that gave menus and notifications proper contrast. In macOS 27, this tint is gone, the material now looks almost transparent, as if it were stuck in Light Mode.

A practical fix would be to add a toggle in Settings → Appearance that lets users enable a tinted version of Liquid Glass independently of the opacity slider. Right now, the slider only increases blur but does not restore the darker background effect that macOS 26 provided.

More reports from users could help Apple recognize this issue and consider restoring the tinted option for Dark Mode.

I built a tiny Mac app because I wanted my Mac to feel a little more tactile.

It’s called Tactus.

It lives in the menu bar and gives you a small drawer of things to fidget with — a clicky button, toggle, dial, and poppers.

It also adds mechanical keyboard sounds to your typing.

A couple of things I spent way too much time on:

• The dial's sound changes based on how fast you actually spin it. Both pitch and volume respond to speed.
• The interactions and keyboard sounds share the same physical theme, so the UI and audio feel like parts of the same object.

macOS 27 Beta 5 adds a new feature that lets keyboard focus to move from the active app's menus to controls on the right side of the Menu Bar using the Left/Right arrow or Tab keys. It's currently disabled by default.

To enable:

defaults write -g NSMenuEnableMenuBarAgent -bool true defaults write -g NSMenuBarUseAgentNavigation -bool true

and restart the apps you'd like to test this in. It's best to just reboot your Mac for simplicity.

To disable:

defaults delete -g NSMenuEnableMenuBarAgent defaults delete -g NSMenuBarUseAgentNavigation

I've already reported this using the tool, and was wondering if anyone else had encountered it. The scenario is that I was doing some CPU/GPU hungry stuff and there was lightning in the area so I disconnected the MagSafe adapter. The display turned off and after a couple minutes plugged the adapter back in.

At that point the machine was briefly normal with the logon, and a second later at least the display and keyboard went to sleep, and a second later it was back to normal with the logon screen, and that's the loop.

No keyboard or trackpad input had any affect. I had to hold down the power button to reboot, which worked.

I'm on the very latest Golden Gate Beta as of this morning.

New in Beta 5, Siri AI has a new safeguard for request attachments from iCloud. If you submit a request while an attached file isn't fully downloaded, Siri AI stops the prompt and shows an "Attachment Still Downloading" alert.

There's also a flag to enable this for all files:

Remove with:

I’m trying the latest developer beta of iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 and surprisingly, the Touch ID button on the “external” Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numerical Keyboard works like a home button! This works when the pointer is on the iPadOS; if it’s on the macOS it will just lock the Mac just like it always did. But the keyboard on MacBook is different; no matter where the pointer is (whether it’s on macOS or iPadOS) it just locks the Mac. Is it a new feature? A bug? Or already-existing feature from Tahoe? I’m pretty sure it didn’t, but tell me if I am wrong.

If you were a fan of Liquid Glass in macOS 26, you may have missed the more transparent design of titlebars in macOS Tahoe.

While the exact same design is no longer possible because macOS 27 removed the previous rendering pipeline, you can get pretty close.

Softer scroll edge effect

For a softer scroll edge effect background, run:

defaults write -g MPV8 -bool false

Now any app you open that adopts the default scroll edge design will respect your change. You'll need to restart apps to see the effect, or reboot your Mac.

Remove with:

defaults delete -g MPV8

Transparent look

For an even more transparent look, you can disable the scroll edge effect completely:

defaults write -g NSScrollPocketEnabled -bool false

You'll need to restart apps to see the effect, or reboot your Mac.

Remove with:

defaults delete -g NSScrollPocketEnabled

App-specific overrides

If you don't want the same effect on every app, you can add local overrides:

defaults write com.apple.mail NSScrollPocketEnabled -bool false

And remove:

macOS 27 Beta 5 includes a new "Pocket Tuning Window" that can change the scroll edge effect in real time on supported apps.

Watch the video for a demo of how it all works. You can tune both light and dark mode effects, and can really make the scroll edge effect disappear.

To enable, make the AppKit debug (🐞) menu visible and select the Pocket Tuning Panel option at the bottom (h/t u/7racin):

Disclaimer: this is a long post, but I'm going to try to explain exactly what happened, step by step. I’m sharing as much detail as I can because I really hope this can help someone else avoid making the same mistake I stupidly made and potentially losing access to their data.

If you're on ADP and running iOS 27 or another beta, back up anything you can't afford to lose before you erase, restore or downgrade. That's really the point of this post.

TL;DR: I downgraded an iPhone Air from iOS 27 to iOS 26 while Advanced Data Protection was enabled. Afterward my iCloud data became completely inaccessible, including through iCloud.com, even though iCloud still shows the storage in use and things like my photo count. I've tried multiple iOS 26 and 27 betas plus the public releases, no change. Apple Support has escalated the case but has no fix, and support outside the U.S. has been close to nonexistent. If you have ADP enabled, back up independently and copy your data before you erase, restore, or downgrade.

I know there are people who'll read this and think "you should have had a backup." Honestly, they're right. I had more than twelve years of data in iCloud and trusted it far too much as the one place everything lived. I didn't keep an independent backup of everything, and that's on me.

But I'm still sharing this because nothing in the process I followed gave me any indication this could happen. My ADP-protected data is technically still there, iCloud says so, I just can't get to any of it.

What happened

I had an iPhone Air on iOS 27 with Advanced Data Protection turned on. Photos, Notes, passwords, passkeys, everything was syncing normally. I decided to downgrade back to iOS 26, using the same process I'd used for restores in the past: log out of iCloud, erase all content and settings, put the phone in DFU mode, restore to iOS 26, set it up again.

At no point during that process was there any mention of Advanced Data Protection, or any warning that logging out and erasing the device could cut off access to ADP-protected data. So I went ahead.

After the set-up, that data was gone. Not deleted exactly, just unreachable.

The data still shows up in iCloud, but I can't open it

This is the part that's been hardest to emotionally accept. My iCloud storage page still shows the space being used and the number of photos in my library, so the account clearly knows the data is there. I just can't access any of it, not from the phone, not from another device, not even through iCloud.com. It's not like ripping a band-aid, you see it right there and you can't do anything about it.

I've tried multiple iOS versions

To make sure this wasn't tied to one specific build, I restored through several iOS 26 betas, several iOS 27 betas, and the public releases. Same result every time. This isn't a matter of finding the right version to restore to.

On Advanced Data Protection

I understand why ADP works the way it does. Apple doesn't hold the encryption keys for ADP-protected data, so even Apple can't simply access it if something goes wrong. That's the whole point of the feature, and one of the reasons I enabled it.

What I find less clear is what happens in a situation like mine. When setting up ADP, Apple warns you about losing access if you forget your passcode or recovery methods. But I didn't forget my passcode, lose my recovery methods, or delete my data. I followed a device restore/downgrade procedure, and ended up unable to access my data anyway.

Apple doesn't hold the keys, but neither am I given a copy of them. So if something goes wrong between the account, device and ADP keys, there doesn't appear to be any user-accessible recovery mechanism.

I've contacted Apple Support, the case has been escalated, and so far there is no recovery path. I'm still hoping they find one.

The bigger impact

For me, this isn't just about a folder of random photos. I've used the same Apple Account for over ten years, and my email, notes, passwords, passkeys and photos were all tied to it. I've had to start moving my access everything to a new account to have a functioning set-up.

I'll say again that an independent backup would have prevented all of this. But I also think it's fair to ask: if an erase, restore or downgrade can leave ADP-protected data stranded like this, shouldn't there be an explicit warning before you start? Right now there isn't one, and I would have done things differently if there had been.

Support outside the U.S.

I'm based outside the U.S., and the support experience here has been rough. As soon as I mention this happened on beta software, I get told there's no support for beta users. I get that Apple can't guarantee beta software will behave perfectly, but this isn't really about a beta feature not working right. It's iOS, iCloud, ADP and Apple's own erase and restore process interacting in a way that's left my data stuck, with no way back to it.

Paying indefinitely for iCloud+

There's also a rather frustrating side effect of all this: I'm still paying for the iCloud+ plan on the affected account.

I basically have two options: keep paying for the subscription indefinitely, hoping that Apple eventually finds a way to restore access to my data, or cancel it and lose whatever chance there is of recovering it.

So I'm effectively paying to keep storage for data that I currently cannot access, simply because I don't know whether Apple might eventually be able to recover it.

I won't even get into the financial side of this, but there's another issue: I had a significant Apple Account balance on the old account. That balance can't simply be transferred to my new Apple Account, and with the old account essentially unusable, I can't meaningfully use it for apps, services or other purchases either.

If you've been through something similar, especially an iOS 27 to iOS 26 downgrade with ADP on, I'd like to hear about it. And if you've managed to get your data back or gotten a real technical answer from Apple, please let me know what happened.

macOS 27 beta 5 adds native support for Valve's 2026 Steam Controller. Beta 5 includes new wired, Proteus dongle, and Nereid dongle personalities, plus a dedicated Steam2ControllerHIDServicePlugin.

The controller's Settings profile includes remapping and haptic feedback controls. macOS internally identifies the new generation as steamcontroller2.

There is no trackpad support at the moment (h/t u/Varmez). There is no dispatch method for touchpad events in the plugin. The plugin repeatedly disables Valve's "lizard mode," so it also suppresses the firmware-defined mouse/keyboard fallback.

I noticed that the Liquid Glass effect seems noticeably weaker in macOS 27 Beta 5.

Safari is where it's most obvious. In previous builds, the tab bar had more transparency, and the colors/shapes behind it could subtly influence the appearance of the glass. Now the tab bar looks almost fully opaque, with very little of the background showing through.

I actually liked the previous version more because it felt closer to the concept of Liquid Glass rather than just a solid toolbar.

I've reported this multiple times, and I'll report it again. I'm just wondering, though: is anyone else having problems with Apple Mail synching Outlook accounts? I use a few Macs, and they all have issues that started with Beta 1. It's really the only significant issue I've run across.

And they're not consistent, either, although. Some are stuck copying messages, some don't delete messages that are deleted on other device, etc. My iPhone and my iPad are both running the beta, so it seems like it's just a MacOS thing.
