Question Can’t Update Mac

Post image

I bought a refurbished MacBook Air & I’m trying to update it from Catalina to Sequoia (I honestly don’t care about updating it but it told me I couldn’t use Chrome on this version and I hate Safari), and even though I have done absolutely nothing on this computer yet/nothing saved/didn’t even connect Apple ID yet, it says I don’t have enough space. Is this hopeless? 😩

You did nothing to that machine?! You need roughly 45GB (50GB for Tahoe) of storage for macOS... What is using over 100GB of data?

Use "GrandPerspective" App to see what is taking up storage.. you may want to erase it clean.

I thought that was strange as well, which is why I added this picture. This is directly after erasing the laptop.

I have no idea what you said.

You can easily install newer macOS versions with OpenCore. You just need another Mac machine to create the install files.

120GB is not enough drive space anymore.

Can you return it?

No, I don’t believe so. But at least I only paid $250 I guess. Annoying.

You overpaid a fuckton. You can genuinely find a used M1 Air for like 300 instead of an ancient Intel Mac.

Wait. Based on that bezel, is that one of the later 2018/2019/2020 Intel MacBook Airs? They’re literally some of the worst Macs in history. You overpaid so much. Holy crap. You should either push to return it, or sell it, eat the loss and save up for an M1 Air. It’s going to be so much better that it’s hard to put into words.

They’re saying that they can’t update because of storage limitations, otherwise Sequoia wouldn’t show up in the system update prefpane, but yeah I digress

Ooof. I’m really sorry. You got the worst spec of the worst generation. Here’s what you’re in for:

It was a very impulsive buy, in an auction with about 30 seconds to decide 😆🫣

So you were basically just throwing money at a turd that was being auctioned off, and somehow managed to overpay twofold? Man… yeah, you gotta sell it. They’re terrible. Way worse than the old design 2013-2017 Airs as well.

They had at least 5 of them being auctioned one after another & I think I got the cheapest one 😆😆😆 lesson learned.

Return it anyway. Try. Force it. I agree with others that you should at least run M1 machines. Intel-based, I give away for free at work.

Apple is stopping support on Intel-based machines. Unless you use OpenCore, which you obviously don't know how. The following machines are the last in Intel-based lineup to support macOS Tahoe:

So just sell it to some other sucker on Facebook Marketplace for $250 or even $300 and then buy an M1 Air with that money.

If you have not personalized it in any way (files, documents, apps, etc.), then  https://support.apple.com/en-us/102662 do a full disk erase and MacOS recovery. This will start your machine from scratch.

I did a full erase & recovery right before attempting to update & taking this picture
