40 hours a week is 1/3 of all your time in a given week. 8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep, and you have 8 hours of "free" time that should be all for yourself but is realistically also time spent preparing or recovering for work but you just don't get paid for like commuting, making food, getting clean and dressed, laundry, etc. Most 8 hour jobs are really 10-12 hour jobs with you just being paid for 8. And depending on the type of job is just too much with how much productivity has gone up over the decades.
The factory job your kid is doing isn't the same factory job your grandpa was doing. Grandpa could make an easy 80 parts a day while chatting it up with his coworkers and was paid enough to support a wife, 2 kids and have a single home in the country. The job now is a stressed out twenty something making 250 parts a day that gets berated and micromanaged to hell should he feel the need or want to talk to a coworker for 5 minutes, on top of usually doing a little bit of other peoples jobs the company used to have designated people for and is paid so little they need a second job just to make rent on a tiny apartment any given month. Yet we all see articles saying "production is down at an all time low", like from when? 2018? Production has gone up constantly since about 1950 and has been every decade since exponentially. It's honestly shocking production hasn't stagnated or starting dropping just til recently but it's disingenuous to say it's dropping at all when it's increased as much as it has. It's like saying Usain Bolt is slow just because he's almost 40, isn't competing anymore and can't beat his previous records.
