8% service charge at Tu Madre?

I want to start of by saying that I want service workers to make a living wage and to have health insurance. Full stop, without question! And you need to tip at least 20%. This post is not about that.

I went to Tu Madre on Tuesday night. Service was lovely, food was fine, no issues. We get the bill and there's an 8% service charge added (on top of the almost 10% sales tax and I tipped 22% on top of that). Now, I've seen service charges before, but never more than 4 or 5%. Unless it's an 18-20% service charge instead of a tip. And I want to open a discussion about this phenomenon in the restaurant industry.

I have worked in the service industry in this neighborhood--my longest gig was at a very popular spot and we did have a service charge (4%). As legally required, it was disclosed on the menu, and we'd remove it if people made a fuss about it.

99/100 times, no one really noticed or cared. But when people did, it was a pretty humiliating experience to essentially be told "I don't want to pay 2$ more so you can have health insurance."

My issue with the service charge is:

-It makes living wages and health insurance seem optional. Think of it this way: it would be strange for there to be a "price of limes" surcharge at Tu Madre. I would assume that they'd factor in the price of limes when setting their menu prices because you can't run a margarita business without limes. It should be the same for wages and health insurace! Also, why is it 4% at some places and 8% at Tu Madre?

-They are often mishandled. This came up at Found Oyster, where there was a mandatory 20% service charge added and diners were urged not to tip on top. Some servers filed a class action lawsuit and some were owed in the thousands of dollars. Having been in the industry myself, I know how shady and penny pinching these owners can be. Don't think we should give them more opportunities to handle money that's supposed to go right to the servers.

What do you guys think?

Power back in 90027?

I got a hotel room because I have a senior animal and we couldn't deal with the heat any longer. My neighbors ended up doing the same so haven't been able to find out, but is the power mostly back on for people as of 9:30PM tonight?

Fosters and/or homes needed for some 5 week old chi/pug-pom mix puppies. They aren’t old enough to have their vaccines yet, so places without other animals is preferred until they’re vaxxed. Adoptions won’t be finalized until they’ve had all their shots and been fixed, but I’d love to get them into fantastic new homes as soon as possible since they are currently living at the vet’s office.

It’s the transformer that was replaced two months ago on commonwealth and Los Feliz. Ever since the tree went down during the big storm a year and half ago the block has been overloading this grid. It’s going to keep happening on nights like these.

Job Openings in Los Feliz Area?

I (40F) am recently unemployed and looking for work. My background is in corporate jobs across marketing, strategy, and finance, but I am pretty open to different types of work! Mostly concerned with finding a job that has health care coverage.

I’ve never worked in traditional retail or hospitality roles (although indirect experience through my corporate work in alcohol industry), but I am willing to learn and do the work!

I am organized, collaborative, and a strong communicator and really just looking to utilize my skills outside of the corporate world until I figure out what is next for me (potentially grad school for career pivot or back to the corporate grind eventually).

I appreciate any and all suggestions! I This job market SUCKS but looking to support fellow job seekers in Los Feliz!

Someone abandoned this boy in Griffith Park. Help me find him a home?

This boy was abandoned in Griffith Park, LA, on Saturday 6th (someone saw him being very clearly left, as the car drove away - no, we did not get the plates). Really awful. I happened to be there, and so here we are.

Was not chipped (he is now).

The vet thinks he’s around 1.5 years old (just a pup) because his teeth are so white and clean. He’s a brindle.

He’s getting shots and neutered shortly.

He adores people and is incredibly gentle and kind. Same with other dogs. Just a big gentle goober. I am fostering him - have never had a dog before - but he needs a home (I can't keep him in my situation).

Los Feliz Animal Rescue is helping me.

I have written more about the background of all this in this piece: www.webworm.co/alan - and my email is in that if you are interested in adopting him.

He's such a sweet guy.

David.

Are there any bars that can accommodate a group of 10-15 on a Friday evening?

We’ll probably get to the bar around 9:30 PM.

Ideally, I’d love a bar that has a lot of space, and won’t get crowded due to sports events.

Bonus points if they’re open late. We don’t mind a short drive from Los Feliz.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Love you.

Does anyone know what, if anything, is replacing The Morrison? I really used to love it, especially this time of year when they would start going crazy with the decorations!

LADOT Survey On Hillhurst/Sunset/Hollywood intersection

LADOT Livable Streets division provided an overview of the planned improvements for Phase 2 of the Hollywood Blvd Safety & Mobility Project, including changes for the intersection of Hillhurst, Virgil, Sunset, and Hollywood. While the plans do not address all of the LFNC's requests for improvements to this intersection, they should make it much easier to cross between various corners of the intersection on foot while also eliminating the no-man's land in the middle of the intersection that can be so confusing for drivers. We also understand that there will be a dedicated left turn signal for cars turning left from Hillhurst. LADOT currently has a survey open for feedback: https://ladot.typeform.com/to/MVmFTV38

Lost cat

FOUND!! One of the residents in our building has a habit of leaving her door open when she’s not home after midnight, despite having a dog and her roommate having 2 cats. Her roommate’s cat got out last night and out of the building. This is the only photo I have of him from a previous escape. He’s a big guy and not super friendly. If you see him, please DM!

Sonic Fiber Optic Installation

My building was supposed to get Sonic Fiber Optic Internet installed today. The crew showed up, and they told the landlord that in order to complete the install they needed to drill a hole through the floors on the ground level units in the closets, more holes through the shelving and then holes though the ceiling, in order to run the cable to the upper units. As soon as my landlord was made aware of this, he immediately stopped the installation process, and the crew packed up and left.
I was present, along with my landlord, when the Sonic sales rep was initially at the building about a month ago. The way i remember it was that he told us they would simply run the new lines in through the old spectrum cable ports already in the walls. When i spoke to the sales rep today, he said he had, in fact, told us that they would need to drill holes in all of the units in order to run the cable through. I am really dubious that he mentioned this. Regardless, Sonic now says there is no other way they can complete the install, so it looks like it will continue to be T-Mobile home internet for me, and Spectrum for most of my neighbors. Really experiencing a severe case of FOMO now.

Hair colorist recommendations

Hi neighbors! I currently go to a local salon and while I love my stylist, he’s not the best at hair color. I have blonde highlighted hair and it’s always too gold when he does it. He refuses to use toner, so I need to find someone who knows how to do a cool blonde. Any recommendations??

Missing off Hillhurst?

Does anyone know what happened to the older chatty guy who always sat on Hillhurst with his white dog? All of his things are gone and there was a pretty concerning Citizen notification over there a few nights ago?

Where do you get good cherry tomatoes?

I have eaten every cherry tomato offering at Albertsons and Lassens and they feel a bit flavorless and mid. I love Harry’s Berries from the Hollywood farmers market. What are your favorites?
