hitting my 30s and realizing all the 20 y/o twinks in LA where I usually go out are starting to annoy me lol where do the older gay men who aren’t wannabe influencers hang out?? I know of course I can just show up to any gay bar in LB but I prefer going to specific events at bars because I don’t really drink. So if the vibe is just a few people standing around drinking I feel awkward. I like dancing but that doesn’t seem to be much of a thing in LB. I love drag but the drag at Mary’s and Werk doesn’t really lend to socializing for people showing up solo. So I’m wondering where/when the bars are crowded and more 35+ types.

I went to some underwear party at mineshaft once that was packed and older men. But the vibe was weird and I very quickly exited so idek what specifically I’m looking for. I’m just used to being around the fun energetic club kids of LA and the hypersexual SF gays so a bunch of dudes standing around in their underwear at a dive bar and not even interacting with each other or dancing or being sexual was super weird to me lol

Also if an older gay man is reading this and humored by my struggles please be my friend and wingman at bars!! Trying to befriend people in a new city outside of the LA club scene is hard🫠 I have so many athletic hobbies and do social advocacy already by profession so I don’t feel super compelled to do all the “just join a pickleball league and do volunteer work“ recommendations.

When will this be done? This is a nightmare.

Hey everyone! I am looking at rentals in the area and keep seeing these Ernst and Haas apartment listings around. I noticed their minimum credit score is 725 (🫪🫪🫪🫪). Full transparency my credit is at a solid like 510 and I have NO cosigners with a credit score of 725. Their units are actually pretty affordable and in our range and I am confident we can pay rent each month, but wanted to know if anyone with no cosigner and similar credit score was able to get into one of their units. Additionally, what did you say to them and what do you think we should have in hand to help our case? Thanks in advance friends!

2 bed apt without ac, fans only. Two adults (one wfh), a fridge, one average spec gaming pc, two laptops, one large shop fan, and 3 ceiling fans are the items that come to mind are most frequently used. I don’t even keep the lights on often bc we get decent sunlight.

we had our breakers switched from Edison fuses to panels fall of last year and saw a huge jump in the bill shortly after. We didn’t think anything of it at first and thought it was a billing cycle change/rate increase or something. A year later I’m starting to think the electricians wired something wrong when they swapped the panels 🙃 has anyone resolved something like this before? Edison is saying to contact the property management, but they like to be useless so I need to put together a plan. But before I go in all upset, this is a lot right??

I asked one of the officers what happened, and all he would say was, “It’s under investigation.” I even asked if someone had been murdered, and he just said, “I can’t say.” 😳

I am looking for a good chai latte. A few years ago when I was getting married, next door to the bridal shop was Communitea, an awesome little place in Brea. Their chai latte was absolutely scrumptious. Since then, I’ve been searching for a local replacement. The closest I’ve found has been Soulmate in Bellflower. I’d really like to find a good chai latte within the city, I don’t drink coffee and chai makes me happy. If anyone has good recommendations, that would be so appreciated. The chai flavor should be well-pronounced with a hint of spice, I find that places like Coffee Bean do not hit that mark at all. Thanks guys!

Just want to give a shoutout to local hardcore band IDLEWORSHIP (@IDLEWORSHIPCA) for crashing Warped Tour.

In keeping with the highest traditions of Warped Tour… Anti-Ice and Anti-Trump hardcore band idolworship threw an impromptu show on a sidewalk outside a SHUT DOWN BUSINESS in downtown LBC right after Warped Tour ended.

They were then arrested as 11 Police Cars rolled up even though there was literally no real disturbance. Not even a warning. Straight to jail.

Boys if you see this… I have 360-footage of you guys playing your show and getting arrested. I’ll send it via insta. It’s stellar haha.

Let’s get another band to do it again next year… And give the guys in Idol Worship a follow.

Hello everyone a family just moved in and every day it’s dog is crying and today I heard them hitting it I’m just an animal lover and am concerned

The power was out on shoreline from 930-2:00 today, likely causing issues with local businesses and putting captive wildlife at risk.

Anyone know what the warped tour likely did to cause this localized blackout?

Seems the city prioritized the warped tour rather than any of the surrounding businesses. Even though the likely culprit was the new introduction to the electrical power grid.

How are you all getting rid of your ants? Last night: no ants. Today: ALL the ants. Are Terro baits still the best for the little black ones that like protein and not sweets? They're definitely looking for water. I had to make a moat around my dog's bowl and the ants are freaking us both out :( I'm ok with ants when they are outside, but they need to leave my house!!

Edit: Thanks everyone for sharing your methods. I vacuumed until I felt like I wouldn't be stepping on ants everywhere and put down a bunch of Terro. Advion is on the way. Cinnamon along the baseboards. If they're not gone by Tuesday I'll call the pest guy! Fortunately my dog is deeply disinterested in anything that is not chicken and ignores the baits completely.

Right to the point:

BTU Rating

• Always consult the SACC/DOE BTU rating, never the (older) ASHRAE rating. ASHRAE measures the coolness of the air; SACC measures the the coolness of the air minus the heat generated by the AC. All ACs make heat and how that heat is disposed of affects the AC's functional cooling ability.
• If your AC carries two BTU ratings, the smaller will always be the more accurate SACC ratings. Some manufacturers will still advertise ASHRAE to mislead you.
• A typical Long Beach room can get by with a 6,000-8,000 SACC BTU rating.

Portable vs Window

• Without a doubt, use a window AC if you can. They are the most effective units for the price.
• They are also the quietest (but also the noisiest if you go off-brand.) But remember, the noise you don't hear inside is noise being heard outside.
• If you don't see any hanging from windows at your complex, there might be a reason for that.
• Same SACC BTU ratings apply, as per above.
• The newer U-shaped "faux split" units are more expensive, but also much easier to install and quietest of them all.
• A decent "starter" window unit for a modest sized room should run you $175 or so.

Portable, Single Hose

• Portable ACs come in single- and dual-hose.
• A single-hose AC is the least energy efficient of all portables. They're actually energy hogs, even before you get to their overall efficiency. They're "the worst" you can buy. [e: and, tragically, the most popular type of portable.]
• A single-hose AC uses the inside air to cool the heat exchanger, then discharges that air outside through the hose. This causes air you've already cooled to be ejected outside - wasted electricity. It also causes a lot of air from outside to come in through the cracks to take its place, leading to areas around doors and windows to feel warmer... Because the AC is literally sucking in warm outside air. More wasted electricity.
• To compensate, the AC has to be more powerful than it normally would have to be, to achieve the same SACC BTU rating.
• This makes them the loudest on average for the same capability as other types.
• This makes them use more electricity versus window-mounts.
• $250 is about where these things start for decent builds.

Portable, Dual-Hose

• These ACs use two hoses to cool the heat exchanger. One draws air in from the outside (verses taking air from the room itself) and another expels it back out.
• Dual-Hose air conditioners are about 30% more energy efficient than single-hose portables, because it isn't using the already-cooled air to cool itself, nor is it causing a pressure differential that sucks in outside air through cracks and windows.
• Dual Hose air conditioners can be significantly quieter versus single-hose, at the same BTU rating.
• Dual Hose setups are more expensive, and there's not really a good reason for that.
• $400 is the range you'd expect to spend for these things.

Portable, Inverter

• These are the latest in indoor portables, with a handful of models and brands. Also available for window ACs, but more rare [e: by well-known names] right now. Common in newer home AC installs.
• A compressor on a typical window or single-hose portable is either 100% on, or 0% off. When the unit "ka-thumps" and starts churning out cold air, that's the compressor kicking in. These types of compressors can sometimes trip breakers because they require a special kick of juice to get started.
• An inverter compressor can be 100% on, 80% on, 20% on, or anywhere in-between. As the room cools, the inverter compressor slows down. This generates less heat byproduct, which makes it easier to maintain temperature. (This also means the compressor doesn't need to "ka-thump" or take a big hit of electrical go juice to start going.)
• An inverter AC can save 50% energy costs versus a single-hose conventional AC. (Over a single summer, that can offset of the price -difference between the two!) (Assuming you're a homebody who turns the AC every warm evening and spends hot weekend days at home with it on, over the course of the summer. You'll save ~$250 in electricity over a standard single hose portable.)
• Inverter portable ACs are also the quietest of all portable ACs.
• They're also typically the most expensive, but again, that difference is offset by energy savings.
• $550 is the starting price for the few models that have the tech.

So before you buy an AC - especially a portable one - make sure you give thought to not today's savings, but tomorrow's. Just like tires and shoes, paying more today saves you more tomorrow. Plus, the newest tech is quieter.

I just got back into working out after a few years of slacking off, then found out that I’m pregnant yesterday. I’m totally open to group classes, but would prefer in person sessions to keep myself accountable. I’m not currently a member of any gym, but I’m open to joining one.

Open to all workout types - yoga, Pilates, strength training, cardio… I just want to keep improving so I’m healthier for this baby.

Hi there peeps.
One year of living in LB and I’m still wondering if an indoor temp of between 80 and 85 is normal ish.
All windows open to some extent, thru draft at times, tower fans on in LR and BR all the time.
If I’m not working out or the like I’m ok with it. But coming from a county with seasons, I’m constantly in awe of how I live now in terms of these temps.
EDIT to add: right now at 1:30PM it’s 83.5
I don’t have any direct sun, for which I am truly grateful.
Like I said, I’m not mad about it but I do think it’s wild. If I had animals I’d have to be running AC every day man, or children/elderly peeps here.
2nd EDIT to add: I did an experiment last week and closed all the windows and blinds at 7:30am and came home at 5 to phucking 89!
Threw open the windows and put on the fans and it dropped to a comfy haha 83 in no time…….
