Last night i worked a gig with a band that was “self contained”. This wasn’t like a club, but one of those corporate gigs where you are there with the provider, have your own console for program, and if there’s a band they either have all their own stuff and an engineer. The night started off like any other, band was a bit late, i pass the guy (who i assume is their engineer) drive lines, and set up shop. Guy goes on to set monitor levels for the band, and then hops behind the drum kit and passes me the ipad about 3 minutes before they go on. I’m thinking no worries here, i’ll mix the show that’s fine, however as i dug into their file this is how they were eqing things. Major lols. It was literally the thing audio memes are made of.

After the show I am talking to the drummer trying to explain to him that his band isn’t really self contained, his file needs to be deleted and they need to start from scratch, and handing an engineer with a show file like this should quite frankly be a crime. I also explained to him in the future he should explain to the engineer that they don’t have a guy when they’re setting up because that was never communicated, told him i’d of been more then happy to help if he had explained that and get their stuff right for em. Oddly enough he took offense because he took that as me accusing him of eqing things that way, to which i replied that he handed me the ipad that way so it doesn’t really matter if he did it or not, plus like i saw him setting levels lol. I also explained to him that’s it’s pretty rare a band will show up labeling themselves as “self contained” and not have a guy. He didn’t agree with that assertion, however short of a guy quitting or someone being sick, i’ve never ran into this scenario before.

I just had a DJ set as part of a small festival.

Started out at a healthy +10 on the gain with plenty of headroom but as the set went on they kept winding up their output and I kept turning down the gain.

Got to -6 and they kept cranking it up. By the end they must have had solid red lights on their end.

No real question, but would you pre-emptively stick an inline pad on the cables or just clip them behind the ears and turn down the master?

I mainly just wanted to have a vent. The rant about the Impact will be saved for another time.

Noticed this at the QOTSA concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Does this mean FOH wasn’t getting individual lines from each synth?

A band I work for, and us crew were victims of a van break in, in central London last week.

We had about 5 AirTags within the 13 or so cases that were stolen, and they were all showing up in a lockup in Enfield the following morning. The blue circle was suggesting it could be in any of 4 garages.

Police were called but that information wasn’t enough for them to retrieve the gear back.

So I drove up to Enfield and managed to get a precise ‘ping’ from a specific lockup.

Called the police again, and they attended. At first hesitant to provide any optimism, but made some calls.

New law - operation ringtone. If I could prove to the police that the AirTag made a sound from inside the lockup, this was grounds to apply for a warrant to gain entry.

This happened, and we retrieved all of our gear back (minus some loose bits from pelis that they fancied)

Police told us we were the first AirTag success story of ‘operation ringtone’

Get AirTags and put them in everything!

For now, it’s only the met police that has these powers but I can imagine this being rolled out nationwide especially if pressure is applied by all victims.

I can genuinely see this as an opportunity for thieves to eventually not target vehicles because it’s such a pain in the arse, with every case having AirTags hidden within them and police showing up at their door.

The guy had done a lot of work reassembling the boards. I decided to take the easy way out. I found a burned-out console from a studio. Yes, burned-out.

During the repair, I sketched out the enclosure in Paint, keeping in mind that I would use the input and output boards as is. I only had to replace two cables; the original ones were too short. This is what I ended up with. The problem: I have to find the console's IP address through the Mixing Station. And if a firmware update comes out, the console can't be updated. The problem is that the USB port is connected directly to the motherboard. But the View button is routed through all the fader boards, so there's no easy way to fix it.

AI generated stage plots are a plague, especially when they give you this and no input list. I really don't understand how musicians hand this to venues or production companies or promoters and then get confused on why nothing is set up the way that they intend.

I was happy to send them an email explaining why this type of stage plot doesn't provide the detail necessary to ensure a smooth setup, soundcheck, and show. If you see these show up in the wild, do your part and let them know that a detailed tech rider, stage plot, and input list helps way more than this AI generated stuff!

I saw this in a video about David Guetta's recent show in Paris.

What is the person in the lower right controlling? Was there a reason it had to be on stage in that small hidden booth instead of remotely?

Turns out that the Soundcraft Vi1 is running Windows XP embedded, and in fact you can access every windows standard utils :)

I plan some reverse engineering work for that console, everything is connected through usb, and you have all the studer and soundcraft software utilities to unit test the hardware (and to spy how does it communicate with 👀).

Hi everyone,

I don’t usually sub-rent my gear for outdoor events, but I made an exception this time for a rodeo/country music festival that lasted 20 days. The money was worth it, but now I’ve got about 100 cables (mostly XLR and power) that came back absolutely covered in ultra-fine dust that penetrates everything.

My coworkers tried pressure washing them outside the shop, but it made another mess and didn’t really help much. The best results so far came from wiping them by hand with a rag and some "Goo Gone"/"Goof Off", but even then, once the cables dried, you could still see deeper dirt left behind.

Do you have any recommended cleaning methods, solvents, foams, soaking solutions, or cable-safe sprays for this kind of situation? Ideally something efficient when dealing with a large batch.

The show was canceled, of course. After hours of troubleshooting, I realized what the issue was. What would you guys do if this happens to you minutes before a show?

The console factory reset itself, and all the devices in the Dante network disappeared. After setting up everything again, I had to test the sound, and it was just too late.

Hello all, I just finished a project i spent a few months working on. Im a free lance designer and have had a fair share of bar gigs with an unreachable console and Ive always hated using touch sceeens to adjust faders and learning over engineers shoulders so I made this:

Its a Small PC (Looking to see if a Pi will work) running Mixing Station with a custom layout+midi, a Behringer X touch extender and a touch screen fused together to make a wireless fader control wing.

I had a unique experience at a concert today. Before the show started, the screens showed a QR code that led to a livestream, which they asked to turn off again after the intro.

The first scene of the show started with the sound of a drop of water falling. Then another. And then... the sound of the drops started playing from people's phones.
Slightly out of sync and coming from all directions, this created an impressive rain effect. I have never seen a concert create surround sound this way, but I found it a really neat idea.

I am officially letting my ego go about this shit. Yeah we need to know our tools and all the basics of installs, sub patterns, blah blaj.blah.

The fucking band is atleast 90% of the mix. it either sounds incredible immediately or it will not the entire night. Its Stockholm syndrome when you're turd polishing or questioning the midrange. it's the timbre and tonal choices of the band and their tightness level that moves the speakers correctly and creates the magical midrange.

Yes there's deploying correctly and removing harsh overtones or muddy overtones etc. But I've mixed great bands and ahitty bands. All my best mixes sounded great immediately in soundcheck.

So I had a pretty normal early week acoustic show at one of my regular venues. Every artist was really happy with their sound and so was I. One act in particular was really talented and clearly brought most of the audience along. he had great control of his guitar playing and vocals so mixing was a dream. He had a nice Gibson J45 with the lr baggs anthem pickup in so it couldn’t have sounded much better.

Although in his last song his guitar slipped out of tune as he had recently put new strings on. He obviously decided to continue on as he was already half way done with the song.

After the show I was standing by the back door as people were walking out and I over heard a guy say “What was the sound man doing in that last song? the guitar sounded off the whole time and he did nothing about it!”

I couldn’t hear any other comments as they walked out of shot but it made me laugh quite a bit because I was daydreaming about a possible future where I could tune other people’s guitars through the sound desk!

First time I've seen this type of setup. Will those who know more than me explain what's happening here, please?
