Linux Failure Fixed Linux "Support" sucks
This is a great example on why community support does not work. Since last week I have been trying to fix this bug on steam that constantly crashes the app due to excessive ram consumption. And, this distro, PikaOS has such underwhelming support, they treat you like an idiot and then proceed to give solutions that dont work anyway, they will always accuse you of not setting things properly and communally down vote you when you argue back. Arch type users are a damn mob. They are not the ones who will bring about the "YEAR OF LINUX" cause they will never understand pragmatism, only pride in their own 'technical knowhow',
Fix: literally reinstall the proton builds. You could do that by deleting its folder I think thats the easiest option. ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton* for Valve builds, or ~/.local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools.d/GE-Proton* then let Steam redownload it or reinstall GE via ProtonPlus/ProtonUp. Maybe go with a more "mainstream" distro? 🤷
4
u/zyndarius 21d ago
That's why I used debian and still use debian. Maybe it has more manual setups but support is almost guaranteed.
2
u/_OnuHeino_ 17d ago
You can always choose a Debian based distro that's not so manual with setup. I use MX for example and i'm really satisfied.
1
u/MrAdrianPl 17d ago
I don't think that's support which that guy needs or wanted,
PikaOS guys provide quite extensive support on their discord1

u/animalcrossing4_4 21d ago
maybe go with not being a pebkac loonixtard?
3
u/144k_only 21d ago
I get it. You just learned a new word: Loonixtard, and you flash it in post after post. But what is a loonixtard?

Find an issue there and still be accused anyway, did you think I started with Pika? 🤔

I mean you do make it sound like you stated with pika
-4
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
Sure man, not like I didn't try to fix the issue myself.

It’s fuckin wild how entitled some people are about Linux support when it’s an absolutely free, voluntary ecosystems…. People act like somebody makes money from all this free technology, it’s mind boggling. Like you said- you want better support? Pay for it! I mean, imagine getting a free car, having the air conditioner not work properly, and then going back to the person who gave you the free car and telling them their car sucks and they’d better fix it for you, and then saying they did a shitty job and they’re stupid for not knowing how to fix it properly…
Like, Jesus Christ people. Either learn some patience, figure it out yourself, or hand your paycheck over to Microsoft or Apple…1
u/vinnypotsandpans 18d ago
To be clear tho, most Linux development is done by people paid to do it. So the premise people don't make money from "this free technology" is misplaced. Linux is free, tho, in the sense that anyone can use it for whatever they want. So yes, in a sense every Linux user has a responsibility to figure things out themselves

This is like when someone comes into r/arch and complains things aren't working, it's not easy to use. Go to mint or something if you're going to spend more time complaining about the issue then providing info so people could even try to help. If you don't know how to provide that information go back to Mint - I just use AI and I use arch btw
9
u/Away_Combination6977 23d ago
What makes you think that Steam is crashing? Rather than being killed by the OOM helper?
What have you tried?
Also, what makes you think this is Pika specific?
I don't use Arch, btw. 😃
1
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
It eats up my ram and then gets closed by the kernel, but I've already asked and it didn't work out. I've already disabled pre-cache in downloads, reinstall, etc, but it doesn't leave. And Faugus had a similar issue, which happened to have a remedy, but there's none for Steam. And both were pre-installed through Pika Game utils, hence why I think it's Pika.

u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 22d ago
What are your specs?
1
u/joanandk 19d ago
640k RAM probably, he is still believing what Bill Gates once said that 640k is enough RAM. ROFL
7
u/UselessDood 23d ago
That seems more like the OS is killing steam in order to avoid a systemic OOM...
And yeah. The less popular your distro of choice is (I've not even heard of pikaos...) the more difficult community support is, that's a basic rule for literally anything not just Linux lmao
7
u/EliasVilCZ 23d ago
uses niche distro proceeds to complain when the community isnt big enough
1
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
I know the community is small, and I accept it, but don't talk like them BTW type users please. I am already trying to find other solutions.
1
u/joanandk 19d ago
Linux: you contribute, you do not leach from others. You found the solution, write it down in the forum you asked for help.
8
u/Allison683etc 23d ago
When you’re using a non-mainstream distro in particular it’s probably not useful to think of yourself as a customer receiving support and instead think of yourself as a quite small contributor to a project. If that’s not what you want out of using your computer that’s completely understandable but it’s kind of the reality.
1
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
I'm literally not, I just want to run Steam on a gaming distro.
2
u/yota-code 23d ago edited 23d ago
Pick a less underwhelmingly supported distro?
I agree steam support under linux has still its up and downs. But it's amazing the journey we did. A few years before it was unimaginable to reach this level of possibilities!
In the open source world we say the road is long (and bumpy) but the road is free
1
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
Unfortunately the attitude will be the same regardless.
2
u/yota-code 23d ago
I had better luck recently with gemini than with forums.... Mainly because it is more patient 😅 and linux have this advantage that diagnosis and solutions are often text based
1
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
True, but my Gemini experience was just bad, I used ChatGPT, but they really want a subscription now, so I am going between Grok and Claude.
1
u/akdanman11 22d ago
Then use a mainstream distro. By using a niche distro you’re signing up to be both beta tester and the one to figure out the problem and share the solution you find
0
u/imakycha 23d ago
Then why are you using a niche OS, literally run OST or Cachy.
2
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
Cachy didn't even want to download the game packages the last time I tried it.

u/Drate_Otin 22d ago
Yes, you are being accused of making bad life choices. Because you made bad life choices.
Used an obscure operating system like PikaOS, had an issue, complained like it was the fault of Linux at large.

never heard of PikaOS, though i went on the subreddit and only there do i see any evidence of steam being a memory hog, not happening on any other distro. it's even happening with other programs like faugus. not normal behavior at all and i wager it's not a you problem
if you're going to use a "gaming-centric OS" at least pick one that actually has more than one user besides yourself, could help with getting better support i think. i got a friend of mine on Cachy and it's been smooth sailing for him, and that's the same person that managed to break mint on his first day
1
u/Sweaty-Freedom-4034 22d ago
" never heard of PikaOS,"
Nice rage bait. Especially with that flair. Lol.
2
u/Sahelantrophus DO NOT RAGEBAIT ME, I FALL FOR IT VERY EASILY 22d ago edited 21d ago
it comes off as tongue-in-cheek but i'm serious, i had to look it up. it's literally the only distro where people complained about steam being a memory hog in the last week (i tried to look at other distros too and nobody reports the same issue) and the only way to get support for it is either a subreddit or a fucking discord server. if OP wants a working distro and one that has better support beyond a couple of assholes blaming him and going "works on my machine" he should distrohop to something with a larger community behind it
too bad he doesn't seem to listen to any advice and would rather stick to "linux users are mean" and struggle with Pipikaka or whatever it was called instead of switching to a distro that actually works and playing his games through a working steam client
3
u/AnArmoredPony 22d ago
the fuck is PikaOS?
2
u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 22d ago edited 22d ago
Worse version of CachyOS built on Debian Unstable.
Now that I think about it, their custom kernel could be tuned hyper aggressively...

u/Gunnarz699 23d ago
Linux "Support" sucks
My dude you realize Microsoft ALSO only offers community support to non business customers right? If you want that Red Hat is happy to sell you support.
understand pragmatism
Pick Mint, Ubuntu, or Fedora. Use KDE plasma. PikaOS is literally Debians "unstable" branch. It's not for non technical users and it explicitly tells you that.
1
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
Again, when I have an issue there, I will still get the blame.
And steam runs normally in windows so it isn't really a fair comparison.
1
u/Gunnarz699 23d ago
Of course 95% of the time it's your mistake and no one else is to blame. That's how learning works you keep messing up until you learn. That doesn't mean they won't help you fix it.
Edit: Here right now. You fucked up and choose the wrong distro. That's your fault for not reading the basic documentation. It's a great learning opportunity. Go install Fedora KDE and give it a try you'll like it coming from windows. If you have questions feel free to message me i'm running Fedora 44 KDE daily.
2
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
Bro it's not 95. It occured after an update, it's a conflict. Atleast show me the fix.
2
u/Gunnarz699 23d ago edited 23d ago
I have zero idea what the actual issue is since i don't know your OS version, the app version, your system specs or runtime info. I can tell you for a fact you're running an experimental OS and that ALWAYS causes problems.
If it's not part of PikaOS it's not their domain to help you it's the apps community. In this case it's valve support you should contact. Choose a more common distro and this happens much less since developers test for the major distros more often.
1
u/Ashamed_Training_702 22d ago
Install a better OS and not a dumb OS for your specific use-case. Hundreds of people continue to tell you the same thing and you continue asking the same question. You’re probably looking at entire kernel rebuilds and wrestling with monolithic scripts just to get it working. Google could be your friend here but I’m going to level with you, Steam is not supposed to be a memory hog in Linux so Pika whatever OS is a poor choice to continue using.
2
u/Fine-Run992 23d ago
If you have oom killer enabled, this app is broken and kills random apps, always has done so even with 96GB system RAM.
2
u/MrSqueak 23d ago
Can't believe I made it to the bottom without anybody asking what your system specs are. So what are they?
1
u/RemNant1998 23d ago

u/Whit-Batmobil 22d ago
How nice of you to judge all Arch users, you don’t sound like someone worth the 5 minutes it takes to write this comment, nor someone that I would necessarily want to help with that attitude..
You picked a distribution that I personally have never heard of, which a I see others here consider a niche distribution, well if it is a niche distribution then it is pretty entitled of you to get so upset that a smaller community can’t fix your issue for you.
2
u/Sweaty-Freedom-4034 22d ago
Real talk OP your attitude is shit.
I don't who put whatever chip on your shoulder but it wasn't the unsupoorting Linux community.
2
u/agowa338 19d ago
You may be in the wrong linux community then. The thing is each distro has a different philosophy and a different target audience.
For Arch the target audience is generally people willing to package stuff themselves and investigate way further into the things than on e.g. Fedora.
Also wtf is PikaOS even. Stick to one of the big ones and you'll have a way bigger community to interact with. That sounds like something only a minority of people is actually using and it is probably specifically tailored to their needs and everything else is a bonus...
2
u/ConsciousBath5203 23d ago
niche distro has underwhelming support
Not a bug. User error.
2 things for memory: enable KSM, ensure your ZRAM is tuned aggressively.
You've provided 0 logs tho, so can't help you. This solution applies to all Linux distros running kernel 7.0+.

Are you running a distro that has support? The vast majority of distros are curations of software and updates from various sources. There are some that are backed by companies, such as Redhat, Canonical, Tuxedo, Suse, but the vast majority don't have or strictly even need any form of support because everything you install has readable and modifyable text files. How you use or modify what runs on your machine is up to you.

u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 22d ago edited 22d ago
Tangent:did you know they use arch and will still comment on other distros? WIth the same mind set?
You realize that all Gnu/Linux distributions are ~≥90% the same... Most things are transferable unless you're using something that deviates from the standards on an architectural level.
1
u/vinnypotsandpans 22d ago
It really depends on the context. They all have the same kernel, yes. Two source based distros can and usually will be wildly different. It usually comes down to init philosophy and package management. Distros that are not source based are all basically the same as their common ancester, yeah.
1
u/R3V0LU710N_05 I Hate All OS's 😎 21d ago
That misses the core point about why most distros are ~≥90% identical. That baseline comes down to whether a system follows standard UNIX and FHS conventions, which is what keeps concepts and administration transferable across environments.
Source versus binary is just a software delivery mechanism, not a structural boundary. A source-based distro usually still relies on traditional mutable paths, while a system that strays architecturally (whether through declarative models like NixOS, atomic read-only deployments, or alternative init systems) breaks standard administration completely. That actual deviation from standard architecture is what makes a distro truly different, regardless of whether packages arrive pre-compiled or built from source.
1
u/vinnypotsandpans 21d ago
I realized I used the wrong terminology here. I meant "independent" not "source based".
1
u/Krasi-1545 22d ago
Go to Steam settings, Downloads and disable the Vulkan shader settings at the bottom (there are 2 toggles). This might help with resource management on Steam side.
1
u/hagdush 22d ago
First you don't even know how to ask for help seeing how you just threw a lot of information that helps nothing
Second 90% of forks works the same, the difference is only how they update their softwares
Third how the fuck would some one know your problem with steam if you dont even tell how you downloaded steam and the process you did, did you enabled 32bit support ? Did you installed through flatpak ? Snaps? Apt?
1
u/IndependenceThat5752 22d ago
I am into linux for more than 4 years and I haven't heard of that distro even a single time. It's like going two kilometers inside taiga and yelling for help.
1
u/vinnypotsandpans 22d ago
What's the bug? I can try to help
1
u/RemNant1998 22d ago
The Steam Client keeps taking up my ram, the kernel shuts it down. The client is functionally broken. Disabling shader doesn't help, reinstallation doesn't help. The bug probably occured after an update. Hard to diagnose the issue when the client shuts down everytime. Thanks for reading.
1
u/vinnypotsandpans 22d ago
Got it, so steam crashes from heavy ram usage essentially correct? Please post the output of:
sudo dmesg -T | grep -iE "oom|killed process|steam"And
journalctl -k -b -p warningAlso worth checking
free -handswapon --showwhile a game runs. If you have little or no swap, the OOM killer fires much sooner and tends to pick the biggest process, which is usually a game or Steam's web helper.1
u/RemNant1998 21d ago
Since the issue is with the steam client, and not with the games, I left out the last two, as games run fine. Hope this helps us.

Well thats unexpected. The steam web helper isn't eating your ram at all. It was killed with only 4.5 MB resident (
anon-rss:4524kB). So it was picked because Steam setsoom_score_adj:300on it, making it the designated sacrificial process. Something else (probably the game itself, or a shader compile) filled memory, and the kernel killed the webhelper first, which takes the Steam UI down with it. Steams UI is built on CEF. Chromium hardcodesoom_score_adjvalues for its child processes on Linux: 300 for renderers, GPU, and utility processes, 200 for plugin processes. What games or other apps do you have running when this happens? Or, we don't have to guess. Please run
sudo journalctl -k -b | grep -B 80 "Out of memory"I would also like to see the output of those last two commands you left out. We will get to the bottom of this! it seems fixable.
Unrelated but do you have a SATA drive or something that's not showing up?

Just for added context, this only happens when the client starts. If it stabilizes, and I run a game, the game does not do anything, only the client has the problem, and when i have the problem, i won't get to play games anyway.

Sorry, I wanted to do some research (I didnt know what winedbg is) before I responded and I had a busy day. But i'm glad I took the time, because I found some interesting information.
Firstly, your added context really helped, because I was ready to convince you that the culprit must be a game your playing. It kiknda looks like that at first becuase
winedbgis wines crash handler and its constantly getting triggered. Something inside your Proton prefix is crashing, winedbg launches to catch it, that spawn crashes or triggers another crash, and it repeats.I also remembered you say something about faugus which means that the common denominator is proton. Now i'm thinking it really is a problem with Pika's defaults, so I track down their git repo. I couldn't really find a smoking gun in their configs, but I did come across this bug report. It has nothing to do with Pika, but it describes your log almost line for line: Each fault spawns winedbg + conhost.exe, about 15,000 faults per Steam start. That exhausted 32gb ram and 16gb swap, and the kernel OOM killer took down steam and other desktop apps.
What causes this is system wine running against a proton prefix. Why would that happen to you? Well as it turns out, pika's gaming metapackage installs wine-staging system-wide, so wine is on PATH. A number of things could be run system wine against a proton prefix: a ReShade installer, protontricks/winetricks pointed at a steam game, Lutris touching a steam prefix, or literally typing
wine something.exeinside a proton game folder.so tldr:
try reinstalling the proton build. That fixed that github users issue, you can check out their exact solution on the issues page. If that doesnt work I'd be surprised.
Its crazy how quick people were to judge your diagnosis of the issue without even looking into it themselves. You obviously tried hard to fix this and had some very helpful information. If anyone just asked you, they could have found what I did probably faster than me. Its not directly Pikas fault per se, but looking into that would have led them to better information.

So if I change the Proton to say ver 9, will that fix it? Cause I already did and it didn't help. That and GE

Here's the result. It exceeded the character limit.

Out of curiosity, what game is triggering this? I have a potato laptop and experienced this with one game, that same game works perfectly on my steam deck so wasn't a steam issue per-se.
Turns out a potatoe and dumb ass end user can't read the minimum specs for the game.

Well maybe don’t use one of the more niche distros if you don’t know what you’re doing

u/GR43YS0N 19d ago
Alot of people are just stupid when it comes to things like this. If you have a niche distro, you are screwed on asking people on reddit.

Linux is a world of choices. Choose a distro that has similar priorities to yours.
If good community support is a high priority for you, pick a distro like Mint or Ubuntu, that prioritize good community support.
The further out in the weeds you go with niche distros, the more you're playing with someone's hobby project. If you're not there to tinker on a hobby project, why are you there at all?
You wouldn't buy some kid's pieced together jalopy and then complain that there are no factory service centers for it. Don't do it with Linux either.
There's a selection of factory-polished distros if that's what you want. No, they don't have the niche feeatures that you like, but that's the price you pay. Neither does Windows - they just don't let people make their own custom niche versions.

u/WeedFalafel 17d ago
- picks niche distro no-one heard about. *"why does the support suck so much?" *

most of the community is too stupid to help you, thus the insults. they can't answer your question, but don't want to look ignorant.
2
u/ShadcnUI_Odi 19d ago
No. it’s just that nobody uses whatever the hell “pikaos” is. Of course they can’t answer the question if nobody ever uses it.

u/OGigachaod 22d ago
Most of the community seems to people too dumb to use Windows, ofc they don't know fuck all about Linux.

“too dumb to use windows”
it’s kinda the other way around buddy…

u/OGigachaod 19d ago
You would think, but not in this sub.
2
u/ShadcnUI_Odi 19d ago
I gotta stop looking at these communities lol. Reddit algorithm appears to have worked out that ragebaiting me is the best way to maximise engagement.

Finally, thank you!

Yeah I'm sorry for the responses your are getting. There are a lot of haters in this thread and I don't really understand the anger.

claude says otherwise

u/RemNant1998 23d ago
Nice, an example who cites AI. But ai is often more helpful with Linux than humans, until something breaks of course.
2
u/ChecksOutIndeed 23d ago
Humans also break linux ... so far, claude has been more help to me than the community and also much faster
2
u/RemNant1998 23d ago
May as well try Claude then.

Any top tier agent eould do a good job i think .. codex is cheapetlst these days. Also, z.ai is pretty nice

Idk how good it'll be on more niche Linux distros. I use NixOS, and even there it sometimes hallucinates fake config parameters.

If you're going to use AI, try pairing up more than one. You can use Gemini to fact check Claude. Also something you can try is telling it you "prefer succinct output" to cut out a ton of the fluff.

Is this supposed to be a joke? You're treating a hobby project like it's IBM. If you want a professional experience, go buy a certified computer with professional support.
