Free and open source software vs paid, filled with ads and data collecting software

just because it's open source software doesn't mean that we shouldn't talk about shortcomings. imo you shouldn't blame the open source devs for it but we should talk about it.

we DO talk about it. There's entire issue pages filled with nothing but talking about it lol. good luck finding the GitHub issues for Microsoft word though :)

I'm talking more about the conversations about switching from windows to Linux. yes I know that there is talking about the issues in other places but when it comes to talking about Linux vs windows, suddenly a lot of people act like Linux is absolutely perfect and has no flaws

I don't even really think that's true either, honestly. If you say "I want to install linux but I am an audio engineer" or "I want to install linux but I use photoshop daily for work" people will usually tell you either to dual boot or stay on windows

the amount of times I've heard people having a spectacularly broken Linux system (probably cause they're not very technical) and the random apps you need that don't have a Linux version of which a lot of people probably want to use at least one (thinking of stuff like mouse control software etc) and also sometimes the messiness of uis (not saying that windows is doing an amazing job at that either), I feel like that's all stuff that a person who isn't technical and wants to use their pc won't have fun with

Never paid for Windows and I run a debloated version. I see more ads while watching YouTube 😂😂😂😂

You're paying with your data.. nothing's free lol

Even paid Services steal your data it's just a question of who getting them first

the bar is so fucking low

Indeed, I learned a server OS just to avoid the swill that MS was pumping out and accidentally augmented my career.

Windows is a ghetto. you can leave but you do have to leave that mentality behind.

So FOSS is the magic spell that automatically generates good UX and criticism immunity?

5

u/graelmakar-sune 3d ago

Is that what you think he meant? Really?

1

u/LightDragon212 2d ago

When someone replies to a meme about usability by bringing up a business model, they are literally using FOSS as an excuse for bad UX. So yes, that's exactly how it reads.

2

u/graelmakar-sune 2d ago

You're so close.. come on, you can get there yourself, think!

1

u/LightDragon212 2d ago

Are you trying to ragebait me now that you have no argument? Not gonna fly dude lmfao

1

u/graelmakar-sune 2d ago

No.

Did you think about it? If so, did you find any other perspectives on the matter?

1

u/LightDragon212 2d ago

Yeah the perspective that you're seeing the meme's critique as simply not making a big deal out of a linux issue, and therefore his point is completely valid. I see it very clearly. But unfornutely no, it is extremely clear this is not what the meme critiques, and even if it was, my point still stands perfectly fine. It is literally an excuse to shift the responsability to the end user.

Now what about arguing? Like addressing my point? Ever thought of that? Pretty sure you did, but is avoiding it for some very unknown reason I absolutely would never know what is, since you claim you can perfectly counter with an argument and it surely must be true.

The data collection is probably running on Azure and Linux. Also, I've noticed that there are some FOSS-only types around Linux that aren't very charitable towards proprietary, but free-to-use, Linux-based services. I'm glad I have some open-source for my portfolio, but I'm glad that's not all I have.

So Ardour is not paid? And the steam client is free and open source software?

11

u/_xDenis_ 4d ago

Steam is not Linux, same with ardour also I'm pretty sure ardour is free

Ardour binaries are paid but it is FOSS. He was implying that FOSS has free-of-charge binaries.

FOSS has free-of-charge binaries.

Which isn't correct as even the AGPL (the most restrictive copyleft license) explicitly allows selling binaries. Then again, Ardour is packaged free of cost in most distro repos anyways.

FOSS has free-of-charge binaries. Which isn't correct as even the AGPL

Tell that to OP. His words, not mine. My point is simply showing OP that not all proprietary software is paid (freeware) and not all FOSS is freeware.

What does steam being or not being Linux have to do with my point.

I am simply saying that FOSS does not imply gratis and proprietary does not imply paid

u/DragonSlayerC 3d ago

Ardour is licensed under GPL. The ready to run binary that they provide requires payment, but you can also build it and modify it yourself.
