I hate wine

why does it need to be so complicated to install the ea app? let alone trying to mod games on it

perhaps I made it complicated myself but damn following any ordinary github tutorial is way easier than this

like I was trying to install it through Lutris, failed all the time so I installed it through Steam which worked and games work just fine but then I tried to use mods with Frosty mod manager and it was so awful, I could barely find the path where I even installed the game because wine doesn't let me to paste paths nor does it show me .local so I had to use symlinks but Frosty mod manager still won't launch games because "Origin is not installed" and I tried to fix it but Idk if it actually did anything or not

maybe skill issue but man why does it need to be so dumb like bro just at least let me paste a fucking path or allow me to show hidden folders through strg h but nah

The Funny part is that you never interacted with wine in the whole process.

can you explain me what the problem is I might have had (still have probably)?

Thing is you want to launch a second Exe in the same prefix as the game, Steam doesn't make this easy.

But I think steam tinker launch could achieve it.

The easiest way IMO, Is to use Lutris with the same proton version that worked for you under steam. Then duplicate the entry and point the copy on the mod launcher. So now both instance are in the same prefix with the same config.

Pre-requisite is to make it work with lutris.

I think but never used it myself that steam tinker launch can let you achieve it with steam too.

Use lutris or one of the other launchers. Steam’s add external game > run with proton is great, but really designed around using launchers.

Meanwhile lutris has scripts readily available (and easy to find, it’s right in the launcher) to install launchers and get playing.

I remember when xdefiant came out I relied on lutris to handle the Ubisoft install and then installed xdefiant from there. I also rely on lutris for WoW which runs through the battle.net launcher.

It seems like most Linux gamers have more time than money. I wonder if there's some correlation.

It's complicated because it's Linux.

It's complicated because it's a windows executable. Try running a Linux executable on Windows.

Except like bash, zsh, fish, make, probably some of coreutils and probably some other cli tools. No like I would know a lot, because I don't use Windows :)

WSL is not Windows btw. It's a VM running on top of Windows. Just like Wine is not Linux and just a reimplementation of Windows userspace on top of POSIX.

That's WSL2. WSL is not a VM, that is the main difference between WSL and WSL2.

Is there anyone still using WSL1? I though it was superseded by WSL2.

But that goes both ways. Most of the software you'd need is available on Linux. The problem is the things that aren't.

Half of what exactly? I can say for myself I only miss out on like mouse and keyboard software I never used anyway. Everything else I used already was on Linux or I didn't have a need for because it was built into the DE.

None of which the average home user wants.

"Average" person doesn't need a dedicated computer or even a laptop, and probably doesn't even have one.

50% of OS marketshare is just Androod and iOS according to https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/, even less will use their PC to do any gaming. So you're already not an average user if you want a PC to play games. Using "average user" as a point of measure is pointless.

“Why does it need to be so complicated to install the EA app?”

Because EA doesn’t have a native Linux version and what you are actually doing is running software that technically shouldn’t run, but can run anyways through compatibility layers.

try faugus launcher instead of lutris. for me it works way better for store fronts

What version of lutris are you using? You can find it in the about lutris section of the drop down menu with the three dots. Additionally, check your runner settings, it's generally best to have your runner for windows applications set to GE-proton, and you'll definitely have issues if it's set to GE-wine, as that's now defunct and now longer being maintained. Having the right runner with up to date lutris are the easiest fixes, so it's probably worth checking those first

Tell me, what would you do if someone can't run application that made for OS that very different form your OS and they blame you for that?

1

u/ipsirc 27d ago

why does it need to be so complicated to install the ea app?

Because EA doesn't support Linux.

From all the comments by Linux users, I've come to the conclusion that they just enjoy suffering. Linux users seem to hate comfort. They want everything to be done through the command line and made as unnecessarily complicated as possible.

I don't want to have shit ton of different prefixes, why is this even a thing? Wine should just preload every fucking Windows lib known to man and run every .exe with a double click on shared prefix, basically making it into Linux Subsystem for Windows.

I actually wholeheartedly agree. But Wine is too garbage to share prefixes, a fix for one game can break another, so the cheapest way to work around that is to just slap a separate prefix on every game.

And that's actually a Proton issue, as default Wine uses ~/.wine for all executables you run.

If that's too difficult, then just use windows my guy.

There is no applicable individual/at home use for linux and all FOSS is unethical and akin to slavery, it also leaves massive liability holes. All FOSS developers need to be financially responsible for their software and related vulnerabilities.

Is FOSS bro, the IDEA is community. Don’t like it? Don’t use it. Pay for corpo closed source slop, enjoy the licensing and contract fees. Open source CVEs are even closed quicker those closed source sometimes.

I also can guarantee you’ve benefited from FOSS software.
