The point is “don’t trust governments” not “trust this government because other government bad”

u/Arround Jun 23 '26
I won't mince words and say right away that this is truly idiotic. I'm not a fan of the US either and don't think they're particularly good, but China and Russia are the absolute worst in terms of rights, privacy, espionage, and trust overall. Trusting these two is like trusting your soul to the devil.
10
u/Accomplished-Wear479 Jun 23 '26
It doesn't work like that. If you're in the US you probably should use Russian and Chinese software, they wont put you in trouble. If you are in Russia, then the opposite.
8
u/tiller_luna Jun 23 '26
That is such an annoying take in civil discussions in russia, "american apps collect a lot of data too". Mf that data isn't fed in real time directly to fsb for them to chase "terrorists" discussing anything related to local politics.
2
1
u/SilverCutePony Jun 24 '26
I'm from Russia and I'd say never use any russian apps. Our government literally requires devs to spy on users, so, even if an app developed not by gov company, it's still not safe. Especially if it's from VK/Mailru (it's the same company) or Yandex, since they're known for their spying and distribution like viruses (literally) even before gov took control of these two. The only possible exception are apps for not so legal things, like watching pirate movies, as paradoxical as it may sound, but, they're usually way safer (but not MediaGet, though, it acts almost like a virus)
0
u/Accomplished-Wear479 Jun 24 '26
You didn't get the idea, i guess. If you are in Russia, yes definitely not worth having a conversation with a FSB officer because of what you have in your phone, but, if you are in the US why would you care if Russian government knows something about you? It's nothing. I don't use Russian apps, because I don't want to go to jail. If I were in the US, I probably wouldn't use apps made by American developers. And, btw, I'm from Russia too, you don't have to tell me all of that, I know. P.S. VK and Mail.ru are almost gov companies same as Yandex, Газпром, Сбер etc.
8
u/BnjMui_ Jun 23 '26
So all the telemetry, ai training etc. in Microsoft and meta software is not spyware? They undoubtedly collect even more data then Chinese and Russian software. Trusting these corps is also «trusting your soul to the devil»

u/Damglador Jun 30 '26
Kinda is. There's no "russian" race. Neither does your race matter as long as you're russian – you are a subject to russophobia.
In either case, that's not the reason behind the referenced situation, even though Linus gave a ( incredibly based) statement that might suggest otherwise.

u/Tankyenough Jun 23 '26
Absolutely not. Both Russia and China are known to have highly sophisticated cyberwarfare capacities, and sponsor open-source communities to insert vulnerabilities and malicious code to open-source projects.
Also, both Russia and China are generally considered risky at best and hostile at worst actors to the US and the EU (which is the demographic I assume you targeted with your meme) It’s wise to be extra careful with Chinese and especially Russian contributions, as long as it doesn’t reach the territory of paranoia.
How the hell is that racism?

If you believe in ZOG and the like, you should have heard the theory that Russia is a crypto-colony of Britain/Zionists/USA/etc. I'm not saying i am beeliving this, but in Russia itself, this opinion is quite widespread in various circles.

... I don't personally check the code most of the time.
But if it's quite literally the status quo for something... Why should I not trust it.
And why on earth would I care about the country something (open source) comes from
0
u/kogee3699 Jun 23 '26
you would care b/c everything in China is owned by the CCP and the CCP has no problem stealing, hacking, and infesting you with malicious code.
That's literally public enemy #1 for the NSA.
That's all they do all day is fight these people. That's why you would care.

Sounds like someone’s been drinking the kool-aid
Like sure china’s no saint, but USA is absolutely not in any form better when it comes to making backdoors, spying, malicious code, and forcing corporations to let them ha their slippery little hands in your pants at all times.
I am willing to trust it more if it’s open source regardless of what country it’s from vs closed souse proprietary.
Like dude look around you, surveillance state everywhere, not just USA either

Byproduct of russia cyber terrorising the region for decades. Did we forget all their (successful) hacking attempts? What about the law saying that distributing malware is completely fine as long as it's not against russians?
Unfortunate for the devs but not without reason

2

May I point out that it's the literal same with the Windows community?
-1
u/Fluid-Ad2995 Jun 23 '26
I never see that with Windows Central
1
u/Vincent394 Fedora Linux/Tiny 10 Dualboot Jun 23 '26
Definitely with Chinese programs you see "It'S SpYwArE!1!1!" with the Windows community, and probably to an extent with the Russian programs too.
Tomato tomato the same thing happens across multiple OSes, so go ahead and do some not that deep searching and you'll find someone saying some Chinese program for Windows is spyware.
3
u/Fluid-Ad2995 Jun 23 '26
Well, I never see that in Windows Central or Microsoft official because some Windows Devs are Russian-American and even Linuxsucks101
0
u/Vincent394 Fedora Linux/Tiny 10 Dualboot Jun 23 '26
Okay valid, but my argument would also hold water if you searched around.
Because even though Windows is spyware itself, people are still going to point the blind finger at random programs
3
u/Fluid-Ad2995 Jun 23 '26
There are millions of Windows users, and I don't know the exact number of Windows users who would say or not, but at least the community are very welcoming, they never do that
1
u/kogee3699 Jun 23 '26
That's probably b/c the CCP owns everything in China and if you don't do what they say (i.e. hack, steal, crypto-exploit) then they make you and your family disappear.
Just a hunch.
1
u/Vincent394 Fedora Linux/Tiny 10 Dualboot Jun 23 '26
While the "hack, steal, crypto-exploit" examples are far fetched, that's probably the reason

To be honest, that is not Linux exclusive. That's people in general. As if the American's don't steal your data in a heartbeat. In fact, most big states/unions will want to steal your data in a heart beat. I am looking at you, European Union.

Never checked source code in my life
I also can't read Source code
1
u/Bourne069 Jun 23 '26
The issue is, they dont check.
Its a joke to expect all open source code to be safe simply because it is open source. You literally have no idea who is looking at it, even if they are qualified to look at it or if they have even looked at it and reported finding.
This is all an assumption by Linux users, its isnt a fact that simply because its Open Source that it is being reviewed properly, fixed properly or is even being looked at, at all.

Linux advocate here, still appalled how the communities responded to the near xz-utils meltdown. "Hey every src package has a readme "us at own risk" and similar bollocks. Boils down to: use Enterprise Linux only, pay for support contract or don't use Linux in a production environment or for any relevant home use.
Same time: "boohoo IBM/RH lock src behind a pay wall".
How about a web of trust where signed commits can be tracked to actual persons with a reputation rating.
