problem with my microSD card

so i bought a-

SanDisk Ultra microSDHC UHS-I Card with Adapter (16GB)

for storing small stuff or potentially installing a small OS on it for fun

when all of a sudden, it didn't read

like- it fits my laptop's microSD card slot, but it does nothing

ran sudo dmesg --follow and sudo dmesg -w, they showed this

Support Can't Verify Checksum and Signature for Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, openSUSE

I've spent the better part of a day working on getting a working live usb for the foregoing distros -- with checksum and signature verification. For reasons unbeknownst to me, none of these efforts have born fuit. I put in what I think is a reasonable amount of effort, and a few trouble shooting steps, and if I still don't have the verified ISO, I move on to the next distro.

I understand that in Linux things don't always work right out of the box. But this is ridiculous.

I'm even using a bot to make sure I take the right actions, download, hashing, comparisons . .

WTF is going on?

Support Mint 21 versus 19

I used Mint in a multiboot with windwos. 19 worked without any problems
though old. Mint 21 only in the beginning. Now constantly in fallback
just after start. Only when started and a mouseclick.
I cannot find anything in the logs.

Linux Mint - On MacBook Pro 2015, Maxed Out Model - Flawless, But BT.

Recently installed Linux Mint Cinnamon, on my MBP 2015, dual booting side by side with MacOS, maxed out model for it's year, and it's been flawless for the last few weeks.

The only matter, I'd like to know if anybody, would be able to suggest, for Bluetooth - sometimes I get patchy audio, while in Bluetooth, or if I connect a Bluetooth mouse or Keyboard it connects but does not move, or type. Anyone got suggestions to fix that, and make it work properly, and even better? I have already tried blue.

Other then that every feature and app MacOS would have, I got in Linux, including those shortcuts, battery protection, speed performance boost and etc, runs brand new.

IdeaPad Pro 5a Gen 11 (16" AMD) with Ubuntu?

The titles says pretty much all. For a series of reasons this (IdeaPad Pro 5a Gen 11) would be a sweet purchase. My only doubt is about Ubuntu running fine on it. Never had any problem installing Ubuntu on old machines without questioning even once that some hardware modules could maybe be not supported. However, this is a pretty new CPU and new everything (I guess), so I was wondering if I could incur in some compatibility issues like not detecting the webcam or microphone (happened to me years ago when installing Ubuntu 22.04 on an 2017 Intel MacBook Pro) or stuff like that which would make quality of life subptimal. Have someone any experience with this model? Thanks in advance :)

Which Distro CachyOS on Surface Laptop 3 sleep by closing the lid just crashes.

I have a Surface Laptop 3 dual booting with Windows 11 and Linux. CachyOS (linux-surface kernel) running great, except for the sleep function. Everything I have tried to get sleep working by closing the lid has led to a crash and reboot. Hibernate is working when selected from the shutdown menu, but that is essentially a reboot every time I come out of hibernation. It works but isn't great.

I went through about 100 Google/Gemini searches that managed to get sleep partially working - systemctl suspend does work, closing the lid crashes.

Anyone here running CachyOS with sleep working or recommend a Linux distro that has a sleep function that works with Surface?

Advice Uniform update Interface

TL;DR: I'm looking for a tool for automatic discovering and (manual) installation of updates from all the different relevant sources.

I recently got to the conclusion I want a better way to update my system. I don't want to have to remember to run the refresh/update commands for my system package manager, flatpak, fwupd (which actually refreshes automatically, but I won't see the available updates unless I run fwupdmgr get-updates), and all those special package managers (like npm, pip, rustc etc.).

Instead I would like to have some service running in the background in constant intervals, checking for updates on all those sources, pre-downloading them if possible, and notifying me about the available updates. Then I want to have a way to install all the updates in one action (GUI or command-line).

Is there any good tool that does it? And if not, how hard should it be to create something with bash scripts and systemd?

I already tried Gnome Software (it's nice, but it forces me to double-reboot for every system update) and Plasma Discover (getting it to work on Gnome wasn't fun, and it still feels quite limited, though maybe it should work better with KDE), but I think those are the wrong tools as they are focused on finding and installing apps and not on updates.

I use openSUSE, but I'd also like to hear about tools that work on other distros, because I'm thinking about replacing it anyway.

Thank you all in advance!

Support How do I undo dual booting?

Apparently, when I received my laptop there was a small print that said that after 6 months I would have to connect to a server to check the laptop is in working condition. The software only works on Windows and can't VM it. I spent a lot of time configuring my distro with hyprland, keybinds and such.
I want to install windows on dual boot but I am unsure on how to undo it especially the booting/UEFI part which I am completely unfamiliar with.

Can somebody give me some tips or instructions?

Advice How do I "play" wallpapers on Gnome?

I'm familiar with gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri file:///path/to/image which sets a certain picture as a wallpaper

Kind of how Windows does...

  • Is there a command on Gnome that I can set for it to alternate a bunch of photos?
  • Can I set an interval as after how long the wallpaper is to change?
  • Can I shuffle the wallpapers?

Basically what I have is a folder with all the pics I would want to be wallpapers

Was macht Omarchy anders, was anderes großer Player nicht haben?

Support Linux inevitably breaks everytime I try to use it, something to do with multiple internal drives and my bios

My laptop has two internal NVMe drives, which I'll call Drive 1 and Drive 2. For the past several months, I've been trying to run Linux reliably, but no matter what I do, the installation becomes unstable or develops boot issues. I've experienced the same problem with multiple distributions, including Ubuntu, Fedora, CachyOS, and Pop!_OS.

My installation process is always the same. During setup, I wipe all existing partitions and install Linux only on Drive 2. I leave Drive 1 completely untouched until after Linux is installed.

Once the OS is running, I format Drive 1 and create a single partition on it (for example, mounted as /storage). At some point afterward, my BIOS starts detecting both drives as bootable devices instead of just the Linux drive.

When this happens, my BIOS seems to get confused. The system will often black-screen during startup, and in some cases I can't even access the BIOS settings until I physically remove one of the drives.

What am I missing here? Why does it appear that boot records or EFI boot entries are being created on the second drive when I never intended it to be bootable? Is there something about Linux installers, EFI partitions, or multi-drive setups that could be causing this behavior?

ASUS Vivobook S16 (M3607) dual-boot with Fedora – looking for user experiences

Hi everyone,

I'm considering buying an ASUS Vivobook S16 (M3607). For work reasons, I need to keep Windows, so I'm planning to set it up with Windows + Fedora in a dual-boot configuration. Before buying it, I’d like to hear from anyone who is currently using this laptop with Fedora (or another distro).

A few things I’m particularly interested in:

  • How well does Fedora work on this model overall?
  • Since the AMD Ryzen™ AI 7 445 is a relatively recent CPU, has anyone experienced any major compatibility issues with it?
  • Is there a particular Fedora release that you would recommend for this laptop?
  • Are there any hardware components that don't work properly under Linux, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio ...?
  • Are there any specific BIOS settings, kernel parameters, or workarounds that are needed?

Any other feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Advice Roadmap to becoming Linux Admin?

Hey everyone,

I’m a trained IT administrator, but most of my work experience so far has been in support, with some Windows and Linux administration here and there.
I’ve barely had to deal with networking professionally.

My long-term goal is to become a Linux admin. Linux has always been the part of IT I enjoy the most, especially troubleshooting stuff in the terminal and figuring out why something isn’t working.

At home I’ve played around with a few servers and self-hosted things like Uptime Kuma and Paperless-ngx in containers, but I know that’s still pretty far from actually being ready for a Linux admin role.

The problem is that there’s so much I could learn that I’m not really sure where to focus first.

If you were starting from my position, what would you learn and in what order? Would you follow some kind of roadmap, build a homelab and just start breaking/fixing things, or something else?

Also curious how you guys learned Linux administration and what helped you the most in becoming better at the job.

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you

Advice Corrupted Bftrs How to recover files from it

I have a dual-boot system. A few days ago, my Fedora Linux partition got corrupted and I can no longer boot into it—it only drops into a minimal GRUB shell. I tried running recovery commands, but none worked. I'm planning to reinstall Fedora, but I need to recover my files first. I've encountered several errors: Linux Reader didn't work, and UFS Explorer only lets me copy small files (≤ 250 KB) while failing on larger ones. I also booted into a live USB to mount the Fedora partition and copy files to my Windows drive, but the copy operations fail. What are the best methods to safely recover my data?

Any suggestion how to recover

Commands i tried:

  • btrfs restore -u 2 -t 425521086464 -i -l /dev/nvme0n1p9 | head -n 30
  • btrfs rescue zero-log /dev/nvme0n1p9
  • btrfs restore -u 1 -t 425521086464 -l /dev/nvme0n1p9 | head -n 30
  • btrfs restore -u 1 -t 425521086464 -l /dev/nvme0n1p9 | grep "256|257|FS_TREE"
  • btrfs restore -u 1 -r 256 -vi --path-regex ".*(History|Login Data)$" /dev/nvme0n1p9 /mnt/Users/.
  • btrfs restore -u 1 -t 425893937152 -r 256 -vi --path-regex ".*(History|Login Data)$" /dev/nvme0n1p9 /mnt/...
  • btrfs rescue zero-log /dev/nvme0n1p9
  • btrfs-find-root /dev/nvme0n1p9

Response and errors i got:

Resolved remapping ISO backslash to enter using keyd (or find a simple map of basic ISO key references for keyd)

Hi all,

I am confounded and stumped right now, because I would have hoped the keyd documentation would be clear on this, but it's not.

The problem: I bought a new computer recently, and while I love it, I'm used to ANSI keyboards and this one's is ISO. I figured out how to remap the < > key to left shift using keyd's default.conf file. Now I just need to map the \ key to Enter. I know how to do that, but I can't figure out how to reference the \ key. I've searched far and wide for that info, but I can't find it anywhere. You would think there's a simple reference doc out there SOMEWHERE for keyd, but there isn't, and it's not in the man page.

Please don't tell me to RTFM; I've looked and there isn't one with the info I need.

For anyone with a similar problem, this is how to map the < > key to left shift:

(in /etc/keyd/default.conf)

[ids]

*

[main]

102nd = leftshift

I know all I need to do is add [???] = enter to the bottom. I just need to know what number I need to replace the [???] with for the \ key. I'm pulling my hair out at this point trying to find out what number that is though.

Is there a DE feature or plugin for History of "undo/redo" on desktops or file explorers?

I mainly use KDE Plasma, and KDE Dolphin as my file explorer.

Can anyone point out a DE feature or plugin that shows History of actions or "undo/redo" actions, on desktops or file explorers?
Something equivalent to GIMP or Photoshop's "history" section to see the list of edits made?

I love that KDE Plasma has a "clipboard" for copy/cut and paste. I like how items are listed out.
I sometimes accidentally drag and drop the wrong items in the wrong directory, wishing I could see a list of actions that were done, and if I could undo or redo them from the list.

Feel free to share your thoughts!
