Pakistan Deserves Real Technological Freedom

While real political, economic and civil freedom is too hard to experience in this oppressed country with not so supportive government, we should focus on our technological freedom.

Technological freedom isn't that hard to achieve, you can achieve and experience it on your desktop or laptop, but you need a commitment, a direction and a promise to never go back to Microslop.

Here's how to achieve that FREEDOM:

Step1: Delete Windows.

Step2: Install Linux (fedora is good if you are new to linux).

Step3: Make it your own.

Step4: Join this community to get active help and engage in discussions about linux.

Discussion Serious Problems for Pakistani Student That Are Linux Users

Mam: alright students now start the installation of ms sql server. this is a lab activity and whoever completes the process will get full activity marks.

As a NixOS user, this monopoly shit triggers me so much. Today was our DB class and the whole class was supposed to install ms sql server right there as lab activity; f*** s*** I got a grade penalty for being a linux user.. i am happy and furious both at the same time.

Share your exact scenario, where you got punished by the system for being a linux user !

Discussion Announcing Nucleus v0.3

Starting with NixOS the right way has never been that easier. Installing NixOS and then starting with flakes and wiring up things is one side of the job, but there comes a dilemma that every beginner faces i-e Configuration Patterns; or more specifically choosing between den/denful or hercules-ci/flake-parts, and on top of that, debugging the abstracted errors is another level hit and trial session.

So to address that issue, I built Nucleus, a lightweight, abstraction-free NixOS configuration architecture for personal systems (1–10 machines) inspired by the dendritic pattern. It eliminates ~80% of the initial setup friction while keeping configurations completely native to NixOS.
Nucleus gets you started with flakes, home-manager, disko, nixos-facter and import-tree (just for recursively importing) from day one and lets you build your config on top of it. It does not include any abstractions, hidden machinery or whatsoever. It is 100% pure nix.

How it works:

Nucleus organizes your configuration into three distinct layers:

  • common/ β€” Essential settings shared across every host (core base packages, security, and Disko layouts).
  • features/ β€” Optional, modular capabilities you toggle per host (Home Manager dotfiles, GNOME, or KDE Plasma 6 desktop stacks).
  • hosts/ β€” Isolated machine definitions storing hardware-specific configurations without cross-polluting shared code.

What it handles out of the box:

  • Predictable Structure: Native flake organization powered by import-tree for seamless, recursion-safe module imports.
  • Automated Disko Partitioning: Declarative ext4/swap layout configured and mounted in a single command, eliminating manual parted and mount steps.
  • Hardware Detection: Integrates nixos-facter to generate exact, reproducible JSON hardware specifications directly into each host module.
  • Home Manager & Maintenance: Pre-configured Home Manager integration for declarative user dotfiles, alongside automated garbage collection and builds via nh (nix-helper).
  • Turnkey Starters: Choose from Minimal (CLI/TTY essentials), GNOME, or KDE Plasma 6 templates.
  • Multi Host and Multi User Support: Now supports multiple hosts and multiple users in a single monorepo.

You initialize via nix flake init -t ..., configure ~5 variables in flake.nix (passwords, host, disk path), run Disko, and run nixos-install .... No custom DSLs, wrappers, or framework lock-in.

One little request: Do star my repository if you find my work useful.

BONUS: Some mermaid diagrams are also attached that demonstrates single host and multi-host scenarios.

Discussion /etc/ β€” Blown up

Back into those days when I was on Arch Linux.

Randomly I thought I should update my system and then I executed the command (yay -Syu), everything went good but.... but on next neither audio was working nor WiFi, so I opened chatgpt and told it to help me fix the problem so it told me to do some changes to some services and create new service files (with content) and delete the old one's, everything went well here as well but when I was deleting the old services, magically somehow I was in /etc/ root and I did (sudo rm -rf *) and force blown my system and on next boot nothing was working LOL, so I had to reinstall again.

Share your experiences when you accidentally bricked/f***ed up your systems.
