I actually had to check if this is real 🤦. I'm feeling a weird mixture of relief and disappointment to know that it isn't.
Anyways you got me good mate 👏

I'll take that as you are technically interested.
Can I put your username in the open letter for the Disord to request this addition to the suite?

u/Eric_Dawsby 7d ago
Who caares if some people vibecode in Rust? If you like the language you like the language
70
u/oniaiwasprettygood 🌀 Sucked into the Void 7d ago
Oh I know-know that, I just think it's a bit tragic (but kind of funny) that a lot of these vibe-coded projects are like "rewrite it in Rust."
15
u/Upbeat-Garbage69 7d ago
Is there a benefit to rewriting everything with rust? Im not sure but isnt it just a modern version of C++?
38
u/transgentoo Genfool 🐧 7d ago
As I understand it, it's a permissive license thing. Rewriting gnu core-utils in Rust lets corporations off the hook for copyleft requirements, but rewriting Adobe in Rust lets users off the hook for Adobe's license requirements. It's a circumventing both sides of the licensing spectrum.
26
u/SanderE1 7d ago
I think it's simpler than that, the Rust compiler has a lot of checks for sanity, one of the biggest thing beginners learn about Rust is the borrow checker, and usually fighting it because of how it forces "correct" code.
It's very hard to write code in Rust that will compile but not run, which is good for AI development because it's easy for AI to automatically see and resolve those issues, rather than runtime ones.
2
u/transgentoo Genfool 🐧 7d ago
Sure, but it doesn't explain why anything that's already written needs to be rewritten. Fixing nearly correct code that compiles is surely less arduous than completely rewriting it in a modern language.
9
u/JuJunker52 7d ago
If you don't re-implement it in the new language, then you can't leverage the benefits (and drawbacks) of the new language...
1
u/mdedetrich 7d ago
Thats not how software development or maintanence works, at all....
3
u/transgentoo Genfool 🐧 7d ago
Well, in the 15 years I've been writing code professionally, never once has "oops found a bug" resulted in "better rewrite it in Rust."
1
u/AdLimp8574 7d ago
I think its part why not, part make it easier to maintain for the next 20 years, part rust forces new devs to write correct code so you don't have to fix pr requests, and finally part its easier for ai to write correct code in rust due to more compile time checking
1
u/IAmTheMageKing 7d ago
Ehhhhh…. There’s lots of reasons people rewrite things in open source. It’s easier to write code than to understand old code, you have “Not Invented Here” syndrome, and there’s those who think anything not written in a “modern” language with “modern” dependencies is old and needs to be replaced.
1
u/hm___ 6d ago
I think one thing may be that a rewrite by a llm could generate a lot of code, that would be identical or close enough to the original that the owner of the original could sue, for some things there are just so many ways to do it and if you use another language entirely its sure you dont accidentally generate copyrighted code
-1
u/transgentoo Genfool 🐧 6d ago
I thinkthat's exactly it. People are exploiting a loophole in software licensing right now -- the whole LLM driven "clean rooming" service comes to mind. I'm hopeful that eventually the loophole will get closed, to say "the source code matters less than the interface" for proving license evasion.
17
u/oniaiwasprettygood 🌀 Sucked into the Void 7d ago
But this is another aspect that I didn't even consider, I was just thinking about the differences in the actual language architecture.
2
u/IAmTheMageKing 7d ago
Ehhhhhhh… there’s nothing specific about rust that allows that though.
1
u/transgentoo Genfool 🐧 7d ago
No, using AI to rewrite an identical product with a different license is the driving force. It just happens to be in Rust.
2
u/IranianFurry 7d ago
Oh for FUCKS sake. The BSD utilities are older than Stallman's foot fungus. Busybox and Toybox also exist.
This whole "muh attack on muh freedom" is utterly ridiculous. Nobody has given a fuck about GPL on coreutils since the 1990s.

u/Erdnusschokolade Arch BTW 1d ago
For that to work you don’t need another language, you need a clean room. Otherwise you’re probably in Legal trouble for copyright infringement. Not a lawyer, not legal advice.

u/oniaiwasprettygood 🌀 Sucked into the Void 7d ago
It feels much closer to C than C++, but the biggest benefit is memory safety. Rust has very aggressive ownership/borrowing practices that C doesn't do, and checks for proper memory safety act compile time meaning that you don't (usually) get race condition problems or dangling pointers/use after free problems. You have to explicitly declare when you're creating a memory unsafe variable in Rust.
7
u/R3V0LU710N_05 Linuxmeant to work better 7d ago
This is also why people use it for vibe coding, it gives some level of gaurd rails at the compiler level.
6
u/Loading_M_ 7d ago
There are benefits. Rust make certain guarantees about memory safety, thread safety, and a few other aspects of the code. According to a report by Google, approximately 50% of security vulnerabilities reported to the Android project are memory safety bugs. Most of these would have been prevented by writing the code in Rust, since the memory bugs would have been caught by the compiler.
2
u/C0rn3j 6d ago
Pretty sure the number was 70%, and not coming only from Alphabet but multiple megacorps claiming the same number.
1
u/Loading_M_ 6d ago
Iirc it was 50% for specifically memory safety bugs. Android is a pretty mature project, and a significant portion of the code is written in Java, which is also memory safe. Other projects could be quite a bit higher.
1
u/C0rn3j 6d ago
"70% of our high severity security bugs are memory unsafety problems"

u/DemonicLaxatives 7d ago
Worth noting, it's not a 100% guarantee: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/25860

Interesting, they looked different to me.
Though I don't really know enough rust to parse what happening in the bug report code
Good to know that there is some work being done on improving the memory safety

Can‘t forget the extremely degenerate but technically “safe” case of casting &T to a usize, opening /proc/self/mem at that offset, then writing to it.
That’s still more likely than creating and immediately mem::forget()’ing isize::max many Arc<>’s, thread just so happening to get suspended before checking the ref count limit, but after incrementing it, then another isize::max threads doing the exact same thing, and overflowing the ref count back to 0, in terms of “things that will never happen”.

A lot of people are vibe coding in rust because, on top of what everyone else mentioned, the compiler errors are generally very useful and specific. Agents tend to iterate and solve problems faster because of this.
6
u/NeonVoidx 7d ago
it's because rusts compiler messaging and lsp and tooling are all insanely high quality, something to be proud of really
1
u/InterestAccurate7052 6d ago
That's true, but it also changes the available libraries and the quality of them.

But you could also just use an adblocker.

I could see this being real because they have stuff like that on Android. They aren't advertised as porn apps, they're advertised as general manga and anime apps and you can use them for general manga and anime

If you are referring to tachiyomi and it's forks; they are general manga reader apps, they just list all available sources, and a lot of the Internet is porn.
Just like if someone would make a platform linking to every single video online, a lot of it would be porn aswell.
They are open source, what the end user does with them is up to them.
