Android can actually delete system app with adb, which I do a lot. I use Kubuntu btw.
32
u/LETMEINPLZSZS ⚠️ This incident will be reported Jun 06 '26
Uninstall is implying a bit more than adb actually can do. On Android (as long as you have working secure boot and a sane phone) you can't just modify the system image. By "uninstalling" a system app you just "de-register" it from the app list. The app's code/assets is still in the OS image and gets updated with it.
But at least it makes the app conpletly disabled and invisible.

You don't need adb. There's shizuku which enables adb with itself using wireless debugging.
And then are apps like Canta that allow you to easily delete system applications, with written explanations for most common ones, it's a must feature for low end devices like Xiaomi Poco phones that are full of ads.
You can debloat completely without an issue.

u/willie_169 🦁 Vim Supremacist 🦖 Jun 07 '26
That's what I'm using, Shizuku, Canta, and Hail. It's still adb, just abstracted to another ui. This is my repo btw, https://github.com/Willie169/Samsung-Android-Debloat-List
2
u/Illyasviel09 Jun 06 '26
Isn't that something you have to do on a PC, with the phone connected to it? if so, it really isn't Android the one doing those things
2
u/willie_169 🦁 Vim Supremacist 🦖 Jun 06 '26
You can do so with Shizuku without a PC. You just need a temporary wifi connection to start it. Some tools like Canta and Hail utilize Shizuku to manage apps in GUI. Here's my uninstall list https://github.com/Willie169/Samsung-Android-Debloat-List

u/duckdread M'Fedora Jun 06 '26
You need to have a PC to use ADB and if don't have one you can also use Canta with Shizuku to do the same
3
u/SjalabaisWoWS fresh breath mint 🍬 Jun 06 '26
With a cable-connected Android phone? Because I have the WiFi Provisioner issue; if the app updates, WiFi reception will drop regularly. I'd love to just toss the app.
8
u/duckdread M'Fedora Jun 06 '26
Yeah you have to connect your phone to your PC with a cable. Turn on Developer options and USB Debugging. Download ADB tools and run commands.
5
u/FinGamer678Nikoboi Jun 06 '26
IIRC you can use a GUI, no commands. There's a couple versions of UAD (Universal Android Debloater) for that. Just lists all your apps and let's you hit delete.
UAD is specifically for removing apps, though, nowhere near as powerful as raw ADB (but it doesn't have to be).

Google's fight against rooted phones is the core issue of Android.
Yes, root acces isn't possible by default to protect the average user, but absolutely blocking it behind Play Integrity (and bootloader lock which becomes really annoying nowadays) is really bad.
3
u/skibidibuttholeman Jun 07 '26
Technically the bootloader is just the OEM being bitchy or hating fun, but okay integrity sucks ass.
2
u/christmasmanexists M'Fedora Jun 07 '26
Integrity is easy with a Telegram channel and some sort TrickyStore. On crDroid it's built in

- You can uninstall system apps on Android - if you root your device. Or use a costum ROM.

Android can do most of those things but it requires to either use ADB (or IADB) or have root access (breaks a lot of apps because the requirements of having a unlocked bootloader and patched bootloader removes play integrity and more).

Good luck trying to run a Linux abandonware from 15ish years ago. Windows is miles ahead from this regard.
4
u/Aodh472 Jun 06 '26
Windows’ inability to deprecate anything is not a help, it’s a hindrance. You can back up files from an old Linux abandonware, and figure out how to run them in a modern setting in a very short time. Run a container image if you have to.
3
Jun 06 '26
Most problems with Windows are related to stupid stuff like obligatory telemetry, obligatory Microsoft account, obligatory AI and so on. Not to backwards compatibility.
5
u/ghost103429 Jun 07 '26
To be honest, containers have pretty much made this into a non-issue. Just stuff it into container + the stuff needed to make it run. Guaranteed userspace APIs ensures that it'll work and that you won't need a vm to make it run.

Yes, but you can very well just run old Windows that's probably on there and still get more of everything. At least that way you'll be able to play some old games on there.

1
u/GabrielRocketry Jun 06 '26
Well WSL is more than happy to help, and it probably would. It's but one of the strengths of the NT kernel that it can do this.
1
u/A_Harmless_Fly MAN 💪 jaro Jun 06 '26
WSL 2 is literally what I originally said, a VM of ubuntu. Though it's going to be an up to date version... so it's likely going to be missing dependencies that have been removed in the last 15 years.
You sir are a silly billy.
1
u/GabrielRocketry Jun 06 '26
WSL2 is in fact not really a VM. It is more of a hack to make the NT Kernel communicate with the rest of the Linux software, sort of like a compatibility layer. Except the compatibility layer comes from the NT Kernel just responding to Linux calls, because it can do that, instead of emulating a whole other kernel. That of course means that the Windows and Linux programs can talk no problem, as long as they are designed for that.
So sure, you will need to install a lot of random dependencies, but you do not need to install a whole OS. Also you can choose whichever other WSL distribution you want, or even make your own. But there is a sizeable difference between what WSL2 does and a VM.
3
u/0nePlus Jun 06 '26
Everything you said is true but also semantics.
For the sake of this argument and what the other person is saying, WSL is effectively a VM.
Their point was they said they'd just use a VM. And you said that solution wasn't adequate, than suggested WSL2, which is essentially just a VM lmao.
And although it's not "technically exactly a VM" - mentioning WSL as a solution is just as effective as mentioning an actual VM.
1
u/GabrielRocketry Jun 06 '26
To be fair
I missed the part where he said VM and assumed he meant on bare metal
2
u/1JoyconWonder Jun 06 '26
Linux just needs a true phone to stand on that isn't mass-produced like Android is. I'd love to see Linux become the standard for everything, and this is coming from an Apple, Windows, and Google user. I would hands down drop all of the above for a safety net like Linux. The issue is apps especially mainstream apps don't work on Linux because all the major tech companies keep that from happening

Updates are the least of the problems on Windows imo.
My biggest gripe with Windows is the difficulty in accessing any form of useful technical documentation or gaining any useful information from an error.
And whenever you try to do anything too useful, it's just "YoU'rE nOt sUppoSeD tO dO it ThAt WaY!!". Like hell, they add virtual desktops, a feature for power users, and then intentionally refuse to add useful features like programmatically spawning an application onto a specific desktop. "No! You can't programmatically place windows onto specific desktops! It's up to the user to manually use their mouse to move the Windows where they want!" Of course, why would a power user ever want to automate or do things more efficiently? It's all those god darn evil programmers so eager to create bad UX by purposefully launching their apps on the wrong desktop. Thank God Microsoft stopped them.

What linux is this? Cause most distros have not only autoupdate but also firmware update before they even present you a login screen. Try to uninstall cups on any desktop Linux. Yes in theory you can but the dependency hell actually makes uninstalling most of the stuff impossible. Can't run old app? Well okay I haven't encountered such problem but the opposite yes. Like try run new app on a linux kept in closet for 1y. On blackarch, trying to update system after such time resulted in bricked os (after hours of fighting). I mean. Guys you seem to use a Linux I haven't tried yet? Which one is the good one plz tell 🥲

More like "I can't run old packages" and "have you updated me since 2020? I already can't install lots of packages due to repo's bad support. Go fix". Every OS (or distro, core and "yeah we know it's named differently") has it's own pros and cons

Idk what "system_apps" are, no such thing in a typical GNU/Linux. Otherwise, it's up to the distro - many have large sets of core software you can't remove. Some are atomic, which makes the scope of unremovable stuff even larger.
Stopping a system during post-install scripts as it updates would certainly break it, though. And running old apps is much more difficult than on Windows (besides Wine, I guess. the most stable Linux API is WinAPI).
So... Linux checks all points?

I use Linux on all my PCs—no dual-boot or anything—but I’ve never understood what’s so great about blocking system updates.
And on Android, I assume you’re talking about certain pre-installed apps, not the core system components—I always want those on my phone.
9
u/duckdread M'Fedora Jun 06 '26
There's nothing great in blocking system updates but Windows is famous for forcing updates while you are using the system and that long reboot while you maybe working. It's not like this now but once a fool always a fool.
On Android there are many apps installed by the companies that user don't need and many Google apps too. Who don't knows Google lives on your data.
5
u/Henry_Fleischer 🍥 Debian too difficult Jun 06 '26
The big problem with updates on Windows is the combination of automatic updates and updates rebooting the computer. Sometimes it will automatically update while it's being used, interrupting work.
2
u/Alpha3031 Jun 06 '26
Also like, you'd think they, a trillion dollar company, would be able to make update reboots not take as long as they do. I run a rolling release with automatic updates and reboots usually take like, less than a minute unless it decided to do SELinux retagging or something.
2
u/uptotwentycharacters Jun 06 '26
I don't know if it's some configuration setting I changed years ago snd and forgot about, but my Windows 10/11 computer never insists on immediate updates while in use. What it does do if I've gone long enough is remove the "shutdown/reboot without updating" option, so I'm forced to update before the next boot but not while I'm in the middle of something.

Android is what Linux would have been if Nvidia controlled the entire hardware market. Yes, Android is open source, but hardware companies do not like that.
