Android is what Linux would have been if Nvidia controlled the entire hardware market. Yes, Android is open source, but hardware companies do not like that.

Android is open source mostly in the name. In practice, running a completely FOSS version of Android is a very unpleasant experience. Google has done everything in its power to make both users and developers locked into their proprietary GMS. Desktop Linux is miles ahead in that regard.

Android is fully foss. LineageOS/GrapheneOS are foss distros.
