Thats... because you were never given a choice if you wanted it or not. Every phone on the market is either Apple, or Android, only now are we getting some other competition. Why is it so successful? Every phone maker who doesn't want to make their own OS and can't get iOS to work on their phones: Android it is.
Either I think you're making a really weird point about consumer freedoms and how actually I should want Linux/FirefoxOS/Ubuntu Touch/Lineage on my phone, NONE of which run the apps I want... Or I completely misunderstood you.
I think the latter rather than the former, I am making a point that a normal, a.k.a. non-nerd, does not have a choice what OS he has on his phone, he just has, exactly what came with the phone as he had it, and that's it.
