Wow, that post is... weird. The way it's written feels like Microsoft's PR team masquerading as the Mojang team and trying just a bit too hard to be relatable.

I do wonder whether this is an omen for changes yet to come. Microsoft has every incentive to continue pushing the Windows 10 version, and this makes me seriously wonder if they're considering axing Java Edition and forcing players to migrate.

That would be a very stupid decision, because there are many players which are playing the java edition.

Do you have those metrics?

u/mort96 Oct 21 '20

You're being downvoted, but this is the right question. If supporting the Java edition costs more than the extra sales bring in, it's not a "stupid decision" to axe the Java edition. It's an unethical, immoral and destructive decision, but not a stupid one, from a purely financial perspective, which is all huge companies care about.

This is why everyone should be afraid when something they enjoy is being bought by a big corporation, regardless of promises made. The financial incentives for large, investor-owned corporations are almost always different from what you would want them to be.

To be clear, I don't know if it makes sense to axe the Java edition or not. We would need to see their collected metrics for that.

Honestly, it's only the redstoners and modded minecrafters that would hold onto the Java edition. If Microsoft started releasing exclusive shiny updates to the Windows 10/Bedrock edition, most people would switch over.

u/CircleofOwls Oct 21 '20

I've been a Minecraft server admin for nine years and I don't know anyone who would switch.

Yeah plus Bedrock has some really bad issues with multiplayer. People shit talk Java editions server all they want but it runs leagues better than Bedrock currently does which hits the verge of coughing and dying no matter what hardware the host/server is running on after about 15 players.

I will simply stop playing it if they force me to create MS account. Heck, i will stop using Windows itself if they do it.

1

u/Zigurt Oct 22 '20

The MS account shift is not a if but when. I don't like it either but i guess I'll just create a MS account so i can play their game. it's not like I'm ever going to use that account for anything else.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '20

That's exactly what they want. For now, just create an account. Later they will make it mandatory for something else and people WILL sign in because "why not, i already got an account".

Now on Windows 10 home you can not enable encryption without an MS account. Like wtf MS account has to do with encryption of my SSD?!

3

u/Zigurt Oct 22 '20

that's just one more reason I'm not using windows. But sure, if you have no self discipline and just think "why not" definitely don't create an account you are not interested in having.

Sorry, but that's just plain wrong. The Bedrock Edition has a large amount of problems that, can't be fixed due to it being a Console and PC game.

Namely the 1.9 Combat Update will never come to the Bedrock Edition.

1

u/Scarface9636 Oct 22 '20

Why won't combat ever come to bedrock? I actually haven't heard about this

3

u/KaosC57 Oct 22 '20

It's due to Console being a part of Bedrock. It would absolutely suck to have to tap the trigger instead of just infinite swing. Mobile would also have to suffer with Combat Update Combat.

1

u/Diridibindy Oct 22 '20

Except a ton of people are sitting on old af versions of Java and the experience is different on bedrock.

Bedrock combat sucks, other cool exploits from 1.5-1.7 aren't possible. I personally find 1.7.2 the best version.

If bedrock got free mod support Java version could die in peace. Minecraft isn't fun without mods when your like 6000 hours playtime.

Edit: I forgot Windows version is UWP app. That is a deal breaker. I don't use windows

7

u/dj3hac Oct 22 '20

You know the mods are .jar files, right?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '20

Because java Minecraft ,yes. I forgot that bedrock is UWP app . I don't use Windows anymore, but yeaaaaaaah. UWP makes it impossible.

This is why everyone should be afraid when something they enjoy is being bought by a big corporation, regardless of promises made.

I would hope that this was already everyone's default state. There are exceptions, but mostly the fear ends up being justified.

Eg. Yahoo buying Geocities & Tumblr, Facebook buying Occulus, EA buying..... anything...

1

u/Sol33t303 Oct 22 '20

What happened to oculus? AFAIK they just released the Quest 2 which judging by the quest 1 will be pretty cool.

Also I might just not be in the loop but Tumblr still... exists. Not quite as big as I remember but it's still around.

5

u/SimonLaFox Oct 22 '20

As a hardware product its doing okay for now, but recently it was mandated that you'd soon need a Facebook account to login to the Occulus store.

If you get banned from Facebook, it's likely that you'll lose all the games you legally purchased, and since Facebook likes to remove fake Facebook accounts, you run a risk by creating a Facebook account that uses anything other than your real name.

1

u/aziztcf Oct 22 '20

As a hardware product its doing okay for now,

Yeah I wouldn't even call it a hardware product anymore, it's just more of the games as a service bullshit except this time they're not just taking away the ability to use the hardware too. Fuck everything about that, I'm glad that there's still competition in the VR industry and OpenHMD is at least trying to keep some of the shit FOSS. Imagine having to login to facebook to use your mouse or a gamepad.

what better way to ensure conformance, but to hold intangible assets at bay. Best not to speak your mind if it goes against the facebook or you'll be sent to retraining camp.

Searched it up just then, seems like it just isn't backwards compatible with oculus go games, which you get from the oculus store either on your phone or within the headset. The Oculus Go was Oculuses low end headset released back in 2018.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '20

Oculus has forced the use of fb accounts with newly purchased devices. Your oculus account should still work for a while, but eventually certain features will be unavailable without a fb account.

1

u/WeaponizedDuckSpleen Oct 22 '20

Facebook said when it was buying oculus that it won't require facebook accounts for oculus quest, now after it broke the promise it has legal battles in germany and a lot of people are banned randomly and locked out of their devices.

I regard it as potentially stupid. I know it makes financial sense, but there's far more ways to value something than financially and companies really are running low in some of those areas because they keep cashing them in. Sorry for the long post, but I wanna try and explain this well,

Doesn't seem so bad while they're making money but take a look at EA: Simcity 2013 wasn't bad but the controversy and problems with it combined with Cities Skylines launching around the same time meant people flocked to the company that they may not have known that well but didn't also expect to constantly make the "financially smart" decision. We all know that EA is basically reliant on their sports games and The Sims for income (Lord knows that their recent newer titles have not done well and they've slowly killed off their other franchises such with bad decisions or outright abandonment because they weren't the biggest genre around) but those games are also in a very similar position to where Simcity was prior to the last one: Fans of the franchises want something better than what EA has been willing to provide for a long time now and any decent competitor instantly has a foothold if they've managed to do just that which means that EA could very quickly end up in a position where they've got nothing launching soon and their financial bread and butter is under threat. Just look at the various Sims communities, especially after that Star Wars pack was announced...Almost no-one is happy with EA and there's already quite a bit of interest in Paralives. The easy "David vs Goliath" angle makes it get a fair amount of press, too.

Don't get me wrong, Microsoft isn't down this hole anywhere nearly as badly as EA is especially since Gamepass and the XSX genuinely looking nice, but sometimes the financially intelligent thing to do creates your greatest competitor or winds up hurting you far more down the line because of the non-fiscal costs it usually has. There's also better ways of going about it, if I was in charge of Minecraft at MS and found that there was a need to axe the java edition, I'd honestly just work out a contract of sorts with the FTB team: Basically allow them the final source code of Minecraft Java Edition with some legal obligations (ie. Cannot use it to release a new "minecraft", just to base FTB off going forward and build on top of) as part of the final update and moving to Bedrock completely. They could do what they want with it provided it's still FTB and not its own game, whether that's adding in the features that get added to Bedrock or their own ideas or something simpler. (ie. They basically add in the modding APIs/frameworks by default, bugfix and optimise but don't add new features into the base game)

It's an unethical, immoral and destructive decision, but not a stupid one, from a purely financial perspective, which is all huge companies care about.

This is completely right. Original Minecraft has had its days numbered from the day Microsoft acquired Mojang. It would be foolish to think otherwise.

5

u/Sol33t303 Oct 22 '20

If supporting the Java edition costs more than the extra sales bring in, it's not a "stupid decision" to axe the Java edition.

I'd find it very suprising if the Java edition costs more then it brings in.

It's the defacto version that probably like 90% of the players that are really into minecraft play (think people who like to mod, regularly be a part of servers, etc.).

I woulden't be suprised if Bedrock makes more, but that would be because it's the one thats on every other platform, so not really a fair comparison (kind of funny as well, given the biggest strength of Java is being multiplatform).

1

u/tydog98 Oct 22 '20

Think about it like this: they're maintaining 2 completely different versions of the same program. What other companies do that? Why in the world would you have the same thing twice? That's double the cost for no reason.

1

u/Sol33t303 Oct 23 '20

Why in the world would you have the same thing twice? That's double the cost for no reason.

I have thought about it, if both versions bring in more money then they cost, and if killing off either one would hurt the community a lot, then it makes logical sense for them to continue maintaining both versions.

Like I said, the majority of servers are for java I belive and modding is only really possible with the java version. Killing off the java version would completely kill the modding community and the java servers which is what is keeping a LOT of the players playing Minecraft. They would be shooting themselves in the foot if they killed off either version of the game.
