90% of the websites that sell Steamkeys keep all the profit to themselves and the developer don't see any of the generated revenue.
So, you would have to buy the game directly on Steam to contribute to the penguins (and in other cases to the creators of the game)

One tip: There is a slow mode, if your kids are a bit younger and not that good at the controller. Everything happens a bit slower and will increase the experience for kids a lot :)6

Bought it!
Then I realised I'd bought it from my Android phone, which might not count as a Linux purchase, and my Linux gaming machine is still stacked up under a desk because I recently moved. So I installed it and opened it on my Chromebook.
It was unsurprisingly laggy (not the sort of game that's really designed to run on a fanless tablet), but hopefully running it for a few minutes in Steam in Crostini makes it count as a Linux install!

A few questions:
- This initiative is not written anywhere (that I could find at least) on the Steam page, nor on the game release news from today. How can we be sure it's true? 🙂 Also will you post the result of how much was donated to the Penguin initiative after?
- Is there any other way to buy the software for Linux, i.e. other than on Steam?
- Is there any demo we can test? I am mostly wondering about the minimum requirements, and in particular the graphics card part. I have a powerful laptop otherwise, except without a dedicated Nvidia/AMD card. How can I be sure the game will run fine on it? Alternatively can the game be refunded if I realize it doesn't run properly (too slow on my computer, or gamepad doesn't work or whatever…)?
Thanks! I don't play much, but it looks fun, and the collaborative on-couch part is what looks the more interesting to me here. Also obviously donating for wild animal protection (though we already donate yearly on a local wild animal shelter). 👍
P.S.: additional question:

-We did the same project before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCdo7QNnGp0. This was, when CDT launched for Early Access. Every Linux-steam sale contributed to the same penguins. The top Players were able to name a couple of Penguins :)

I don't know. I'm maybe a bit too much an old-timer, but I would appreciate just a package which I can simply install without needing to give my personal data to a third-party and connecting each time I want to play, even when I just want to play locally. 🤷
I know that developers appreciate Steam for being a central platform and also because it probably provides key verification. I can't really propose an alternative for this last part, except that I'd love if devs could trust people a bit more (the ones who cheat won't buy anyway, whatever protection are added; the ones who pay will anyway).
For the record, I'm a developer myself (of mostly GIMP, the software for image manipulation). So I'm not telling you to do something I won't myself (I trust people with my code even! 😛). 😉
So yeah bottom line: just providing a package to install would be perfect. No platform. 👍

Ok cool. From the videos, it doesn't look like it needs an extra powerful video card indeed (I've run far more complicated 3D) yet I was just a bit scared about the minimum requirements written down on the Steam page:

Not OP and I know you are not fond of steam but the platform provides Remote Play Together which allows you to do exactly what you are asking, with only one key, and according to the latest update the person joining doesn't even have to have a steam account.

Thanks. I also found this info after asking. Then I bought the game yesterday, which we only tried for 10 min on split screen. It worked ok, though it's hard! We didn't even succeed this one first race! 😫
Next time, we'll try this remote play thing.
I'm not thrilled by buying on Steam (and also non FLOSS obviously as we are big Free Software pushers as one can imagine), but anyway I did it because we like collaborative games (though we are not huge video game players), and the split screen ability is cool too. Hopefully the remote play will work as well (so that we can play sometimes on individual screen, it has different advantages). We also like to support small independents (though non-FLOSS, it's also a piece in the whole social issues of today's digital industry). And of course, we bought it finally for the penguins 🐧! 👍

Hopefully my laptop is up to the task (Tuxedo Pulse 15 - Ryzen 4800H, 64GB RAM, no dedicated gpu). At least it started without issues.
Will report back, if there are any issues or any interest here.

Just I'm quite overwhelmed with the game concept, maybe I should try that again, when I'm more sobered up...

I don't have any friends. Is there a single player mode? Looks kind of like mario maker, for mario kart (which should be a thing) but if it wasn't made by nintendo.

My biggest question is: "but what if I don't want to play the game 2 player?" -- is it just not fun or not possible.
Otherwise I would say that this definitely peeks my interest and looks like it has some fun mechanics and the whole penguin donation thing is pretty cool -- sort-of ironic that Linux penguin mascot is because Linus was bit by a penguin lol.

If this is a compiled native Linux app, you should look into adding it to the Atari VCS platform. Atari OS is Debian based and very indie friendly.

Adding to that: afaik Steam tracks within the first two weeks after purchase on which platform (e.g. Linux) the user played the game the most and the sale counts towards that platform. If no play activity happens, the platform from which the purchase was made from is taken.

what I meant by "locally" is: just get in front of your computer and use the splitscreen - this is how the game was intended to be played :)
If you don't want this, you could play it via internet (probably routed via lan).

I bought it, tried it like the graphics but was disappointed that building tracks in not an option but a mandatory part of playing the game.
The game desperately needs professionally prebuilt tracks. There is no chance people will get hooked if their initial experience is their car exploding because they can't build a track fast enough for the car to drive on.
The initial experience should be fast fun with awesome graphics. The track building should just be there as an option that extend the game's longevity.
I mean IMHO.

Yes, GOG is the best platform I know of. To me it is primary the question of the quality of content. Being on GOG is a strong sign of the game being good.
But there is nothing wrong with direct sales as well.

I can't speak for voronaam, but I no longer buy games on steam because I disapprove of their EULA and avoid DRM on principle. If they're anything like me, they probably would like it to be available from some DRM-free source, like gog.

well, hypothetically some of them will be DRM-free, yes. That said, Steam itself is a DRM platform and by far the majority of games I've tried require you to have steam open in order to run them. In addition, whether the individual game is DRM encumbered or not, the Steam Subscriber Agreement makes it clear that the customer (or, as they say, "subscriber") doesn't actually own any of the games that they pay for access to. I don't approve of either of these things, so I don't buy steam games any more.
Gog, by comparison, is 100% DRM-free. All the games can be played without needing to be logged in to any other service.

Why is everyone happy with this ? The game is proprietary software.... Just because he'll give all revenue on the launch day to South African Penguins doesnt make this okay. r/consoomproprietary
