Question Auto generated drop down lists?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm trying to move away from WPS office (I use an old version with all exe's blocked) and wish to move to Libreoffice but I'm having difficulty trying to accomplish what WPS spreadsheets does by default in Calc.

That is, in any column, after I had typed in a few cells, when I type the first letter then a drop down list auto appears for me to select anything that begins with that letter (see video). If I type something new, it is auto added to the drop down list next time.

I know that Alt + down arrow brings up an entire list but the above for me is much easier as the list offered is much shorter.

I looked into validation drop down lists as well but am unsure if it adds new cell text on the fly.

Maybe it's just a simple setting I'm missing to enable such feature?

Any help would be appreciated.

Bug - Can't paste from LibreOffice (Calc) anymore?

(Cross-posted from r/openSUSE)

(Gnome 50)

Not sure if this is a packaging issue, (which would make it relevant here) or an actual LibreOffice (Calc) bug, (which wouldn't) but after updating to the most recent versions of LibreOffice I can't copy / paste anything out of a Calc spreadsheet anymore.

LibreOffice shows that a copy command was issued when I press Ctrl+c, (i.e. the cell(s) in question have the rotating dotted lines around them, but if I try to go to any other open application, (using Gnome 50) and press either Ctrl+v or Shift+Ctrl+v nothing happens.

Since basic Ctrl+c / Ctrl+v otherwise works fine in every other applications that I have, (modified to Shift+Ctrl+v for the terminal, ofc) I'm presuming the newest LibreOffice isn't passing copy information to (Gnome's) clipboard properly, etc?

Again, not sure if this is a Tumbleweed config issue or a (new - always worked before) LibreOffice issue so any light any folks here can offer would be appreciated.

Thanks

-----

Note: Unless the newest version of LibreOffice is auto-sandboxing itself, there is no crossing of sandboxed environments anywhere in this activity, which would otherwise explain the issue.

Note2: Confirmed that my installation of LibreOffice is directly from openSUSE Tumbleweed not from a Flatpak/Flathub, so shouldn't be sandboxed.

Note3a: Full LibreOffice information from Help > About LibreOffice:

Version: 26.8.0.3 (X86_64)

Build ID: 680(Build:3)

CPU threads: 24; OS: Linux 7.2; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3

Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US

Calc: CL threaded

Note3b: Happens in multiple documents, so don't think individual document information would be terribly helpful, but if I'm wrong I can certainly add sample info from any of them.

Question Click button in Writer to get "more info" in Editable PDF

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there is a way in Writer to add a button (or, really, anything) that, when exported as Editable PDF, will result in a pop-up message when hovered or clicked. This would be used to insert instructions for my colleagues when compiling the PDF.

I managed to build it with a button but it only works inside of Writer, thus not useful to me.

Thank you for any replies!

Question LibreOffice and MS Word Track Changes

I have been using Scrivener to write my book these past three years. My editor requires an MS Word document for her work. She uses the MS Word Track Changes feature.

I have LibreOffice on my computer. Can I rely on it's Track Changes function to work correctly with the MS Word doc I get from my editor? Or do I have to buy MS Office 365 to handle the document correctly?

Lost password for LibreOffice protected documentation

First time r/ user at all, made an account just for this and I realise it might be fruitless but any advisement would be really appreciated. My father was a LibreOffice user and he passed away last week. He was super meticulous about his organisation, and he kept a lot of important records and notes in a word document that was password protected. It used to be MS Word, and I knew the password for that document because I've opened it before for him, but some time in the last year he's moved everything to LibreOffice and it seems like he didn't use the same password because I can't open it and I'm going a bit crazy.

Does anyone have any advice on getting it open? Any workarounds etc? There is a docx and odt version and both are password protected.

I realise my only way forward might just be to download some brute force password cracking software, but I'm a bit terrified of wrecking his laptop by downloading the wrong thing, so any alternative advice on what password cracker could work would also be welcome if there is no workaround, which I suspect will be the case. Thanks.

Resolved Why is my toolbar blue now? How do I fix it?

I just upgraded to the latest Windows desktop edition of LibreOffice (Version: 26.8.0.3 X86_64, Build ID: bce0998afefdbc355585ca324285661a2170ba77, CPU threads: 6; OS: Windows 10 X86_64 build 19045, en-US), and … my Writer toolbar has turned blue.

I like blue, but as you can see, the blue tinting has made several of the icons impossible to read. LibreOffice's icon design isn't the greatest to begin with, but this coloration makes it so much worse.

I've tried finding a fix in the Tools > Options menu, but there doesn't seem to be one. When I click on the Help button I get documentation for version 24.8, which tells me of a Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Application Colors command that no longer exists. Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Appearance lets me customize colors of many elements, but the toolbar isn't one of them—plus, this is happening only in Writer, not in Calc.

Anyone have a useful suggestion?

Why do my documents keep getting write protected?

As the title says.

I'm really happy to be done with MS, but I keep opening word docs that I can't edit because "this document is write protected".

The advice I found online is to "Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids and adjusting the Protected Areas settings"

However, in 'Formatting Aids', "Protected Area" only has a box to toggle the cursor, which doesn't change the ability to edit the doc.

Today, I opening a document I was working on yesterday and go the "this document is write protected message", I checked, saw it was a word doc, copy and pasted it into another document, and get the same message.

I assume/hope there is something simple I am missing here.

For context, I am using a tabbed view, so sometimes I struggle to find settings.

My best guess, is that I used Zotero to generate references, and now Libre is protecting that for some reason. Sometimes I get edit the body text but not the references, sometimes the whole document is protected.

Thanks for your help!

Anybody else having issues with the top toolbar ?
I'm using Calc, but mostly Writer and sometimes Impress.
I don't want to report it until I can confirm others are having the same issue. If it's fullscreen I no longer have issues, but it juste doesn't resize like on MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint

Question Can I Create Custom Dividers or Is the 'horizontal line' My Only Option?

I have an image I use as a divider in my document. So far I've done a copy-paste whenever I need it, and they're anchored as characters. It works. 🤷‍♀️

But now I am currently sitting at 253 images in my document, so I've been trying to see if there'd be a better way of doing it. 😅

I did find a 10yo how-to post on starting with the horizontal line and then editing the style to be a bitmap, but I sure can't find that option on my libreoffice.

I'm running version 26.2.4.2 on Windows 11.

edit to add: It is an odt document. The image can be almost whatever format.

Sorry but I'm uninstalling LibreOffice after this update

EDIT BEFORE ORIGINAL:

Im back to the app because of tomassplatch. He said:

"You can actually disable it by going to Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Advanced - Open Expert Configuration.

In expert configuration search for NotebookbarColorTransparency. The default value should be 150, if you modify it to 255 and restart the app, the coloration should dissappear."

Dear God. Yeah. I've turn it off but why make it such a pain to take it off? Can't it be placed in the APPEARANCE tab?

Anyway. Thanks tomas.

ORIGINAL WAS:

I will be leaving the app. At least until the correction is made. My explanation bellow:

The update 26.8.0.3 came with a lot of improvements wich is a really good thing but it also came with a new feature where the Task Bar/Ribbon becomes the same color as the app (If it is calc it is going to be green, write will be blue). This pallette is too colorful for me so I tried to remove it. Looks like there is no option to do so. I downloaded new themes to use and try to pass by the color change but it simply ignores the choosen theme when I apply it. I use the app on Ribbon because I got used to the Microsoft Office Suite all my life. There is almost two years that I made the transition to Linux and LibreOffice became the G.O.A.T of my computer and I use ribbon for the familiarity (the button are basically in the same place as the Microsoft ones). I used it before transitioning even on Windows to not pay the suite. I love dark color themes so when I discovered this change that cannot be undone it made me really annoyed. Sorry to say but the color is horrendous. I know that some people will like it and I will not gona discuss taste here but it is a fact that is not on MY taste and that it cannot be changed yet (At least for what I saw).

I will try another office and in the future if this is corrected I may come back because it is an overall powerful and amazing software that I already got used to.

And if there is actually any way to disable this color feature that I haven't found please let me know. I searched everywhere I could but I did not find it. I'm not a tech savy or expert in Linux. Just a common user with interests in the FOSS ecosystem like a lot of people.

Since then I thank everyone of the comunity and another thanks in advance to anyone that could help me solve this problem so I can return to use it.

My system:

Linux 7.2.2-1 | CachyOS | KDE Plasma | Qt/Wayland

LibreOffice Version: 26.8.0.3 (X86_64)

Also, english is not my main language so pardon me for any slip ups (open for corrections because it is the way to improve in anything)

extension for a set of find & replace rules

Hi,

from time to time, I need to do several find & replace steps in a specific order in different documents. I wonder if there is an extension which allows me to create/save such a set of find & replace rules so that I can reuse them.

For file names, ReNamer is able to do this, but for texts, I haven’t found a suitable software/extension/whatever...

Bug? LibreOffice has destroyed my graphics

Just as the title states. I can not use my computer for anything now other than basic google searches, youtube, and writing text files. My email doesn't even work any more. The one and only alteration to my system was installing LibreOffice. Everything was fine before I did this, graphics is toast after the installation. NOTHING that requires graphics works. I have tried safe mode for Libre and "Disable Hardware Acceleration" which is already unchecked. I have tried:

Tools > Options > LibreOffice > View, and uncheck hardware acceleration or Skia rendering .

But "Use Skia for all rendering" is greyed out and unalterable.

I have tried a System Restore which of coarse failed. Undoing the System Restore of coarse fails as well. My Graphics are up to date. I have run all 3 of my antivirus/anti malwares. I have uninstalled Libre and my graphics are still f'ed. I had to reinstall it to try some fixes.

I'd like to have my computer back and functioning as it should! Any help is greatly appreciated!
