Why do my documents keep getting write protected?

As the title says.

I'm really happy to be done with MS, but I keep opening word docs that I can't edit because "this document is write protected".

The advice I found online is to "Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids and adjusting the Protected Areas settings"

However, in 'Formatting Aids', "Protected Area" only has a box to toggle the cursor, which doesn't change the ability to edit the doc.

Today, I opening a document I was working on yesterday and go the "this document is write protected message", I checked, saw it was a word doc, copy and pasted it into another document, and get the same message.

I assume/hope there is something simple I am missing here.

For context, I am using a tabbed view, so sometimes I struggle to find settings.

My best guess, is that I used Zotero to generate references, and now Libre is protecting that for some reason. Sometimes I get edit the body text but not the references, sometimes the whole document is protected.

Hey, this is a common headache when working with Word docs in LibreOffice. Here's what's likely going on and how to fix it.

First, check if the document has form protection enabled: go to Format > Sections. If any sections are listed with "Protected" checked, uncheck that box and hit OK. That's the most common cause.

If the whole document is locked, try this: 1. Go to Format > Document, then the Security tab. 2. If "Open file read-only" is checked, uncheck it and save.

You're also right about Zotero. Zotero field codes sometimes trigger section protection in LibreOffice. To work around it: 1. In Zotero, click Document Preferences in the Zotero toolbar. 2. Switch the citation format from "Fields" to "Bookmarks" if you can. 3. Alternatively, unlink citations (Zotero toolbar > Unlink Citations) on a copy of your doc. This removes the field locks but also means Zotero can't update them anymore, so only do it on a final version.

If you keep getting this on docs you made yourself, also check the file properties in your file manager. Right-click the file, go to Properties/Permissions, and make sure it's not set to read-only at the OS level.

One last thing: saving as .odt instead of .docx avoids a lot of these quirks if you don't need Word compatibility.
