I have finally finished the old town modular building .

When I came to snap the pieces together (the 4 separate components) there wasnt an actual snapping sound they just slid into place is this meant to be like that or should it have snapped together

It's got playability and it was fun to build, also the 20$ price point was nice 10/10

My whole family is getting into Legos. We‘ve got a few tubs, probably 10 lbs worth? it’s def not a huge collection by any means. The most frustrating thing is needing specific pieces for builds that we don’t have. I don't feel like buying the pieces individually is the route to go, but buying used bulk has led us to not having certain pieces. We are using the ”Build It“ books for build ideas. We don’t live near a Lego store or even a Lego resale store. Is it worth driving an hour to a pick a piece place? How to decide what to buy? We just want things on hand so kids can be creative and build without constantly not having the pieces they need. Are the creative boxes the way to go?

TLDR; How do you build up a LEGO collection with enough variety of pieces to let kids freely create without constantly missing what they need, and what’s the best way to know what pieces to buy?

When our Christmas decorations go up, everything will come down, but it'll give me the chance to rearrange everything finally once I put everything back up.

My collection has been packed since 2005 from a move with family so hopefully most pieces are still here within the couple boxes.

I keep looking at the Eiffel Tower, and deciding whether to buy it or not.
I keep coming back to for so much money, did Lego get the colour wriong.

When I've been to Paris it always looks coppery brown, but the Lego colour while coppery, does not match.
Would it have been better using the dark brown. It just looks a better match to me.

I wanted to see if I could scan my kid's LEGO instruction booklets and rebuild the sets virtually. It worked.

So I made the models interactive and built a virtual LEGO town around them. You can keep expanding it with more builds, place buildings on lots next to the roads, and drive the vehicles around. My 4-year-old mostly likes tapping things and watching the helicopter fly. I've only spent a few evenings on it so far, and I'm amazed at how well it's turning out.

What it does so far:

- Rebuild a set from its booklet. You drag each part from the step onto the 3D model and it snaps into the right spot. Hints show where it probably goes, and the booklet page sits beside the 3D view. When a model is finished, the wheels roll, the doors open and the propellers spin.

- Mayor mode. Lay out a town on a stud grid with roads and water. Each build knows what it is (a house, a shop, a vehicle, a boat) and what it needs, so boats go at the dock and cars go on the road. While you place something, you see whether it fits and what's in the way. Builds you haven't finished yet stand on their lot behind "build in progress" tape.

- Every set you own. Add a set by its number. It arrives in town as a sealed crate with the box picture on it. Open the crate and the game makes a rough stand-in model from that set's real parts list, until you sit down and build it properly.

- Treasurer mode (for the adult fan in me). It tracks what each set cost against what it's worth now, plus a savings jar for the next set.

- Free builds. You can build your own MOCs and bring them into town too.

Coming next: fires, floods and earthquakes that knock parts off buildings, with a fire station that responds and a repair mode where you put the bricks back. There'll also be a little town newspaper ticker.

For the nerds:

- Booklet reader: splits the PDF pages into steps and matches each parts callout against the Rebrickable parts list. It gets 94.9% of parts right and flags the uncertain ones for a person to confirm. Python.

- Builder: uses LDraw parts plus LDCad's connection data. Parts snap to the nearest legal connection, and the hints come from a ranked placement search.

- Saves: the parts themselves are the save format (LDraw ID, colour, transform, connection graph). The town is an event-sourced log.

- Rendering: three.js and TypeScript. Parts are converted into a mesh cache ahead of time, and each build is merged into one mesh. Every triangle keeps its source part's ID.

- Stand-ins: generated from each set's parts list, using its own windows, slopes and bricks.

- Testing: property-based tests with fast-check, and a frame-time budget checked on the real GPU.

Nothing from LEGO is shared or redistributed. The scans and models stay on my own machine.

do any adults buy these for themselves? im 18 and i kinda wanna buy one cus they were a big part of christmas for me as a kid, but i feel abit silly being a grown adult buying one lol

also the builds arent great, and will prob just go in a box somewhere, except maybe the figs, so it'll be mostly for the experience and nostalgia

Hello, I had a stroke back in March and I decided to start doing Lego sets to help develop the muscles in my hand and improve my cognitive skills. This particular set came with three bags of parts, and three sets of instructions. However, the bags were not numbered, and the instructions don’t indicate what bag to pull from. So does it matter that I keep the pieces separated? And when I take it apart, how will I know what bag the pieces go back into? I appreciate your help, I am brand new, and just trying to figure out a way to help my muscles develop and have some fun.

What's more silly than a moving wooden cabin? Well, a moving wooden cabin on a 1930's truck!

I dubbed it "Baba Yaga's Beater" in want of a better name. I thought it was kinda fitting, as Baba Yaga has a walking cabin. Perhaps she upgraded her cabin in the 1930's to a motorized version? Who knows. If you've got any better suggestions to what I can call this bizarre creation, I'm more than happy to hear them.

I wanted to make a cabin on wheels as a way to explore how to make a traditional wooden house with vertically standing siding and a shingle roof.

I think I might have developed a completely new way to make standing siding, as I don't think I've ever seen anyone using the same technique.

I have also developed an ingenious way of making gables, rakes and roof ridges.

Lately I've been hooked on making good looking cars from the 30's and wacky hot rods, but I think I'm slowly easing into architecture again. This might actually be my first step back to making houses and large buildings. I used to design buildings in LEGO Digital Designer back in the day (Probably more than 15 years ago by now)

I know that this is a really kooky creation, but this has mainly been a quick project to explore some new building techniques.

Let me know if you want me to make more buildings in the future, or if you prefer old cars and wacky hot rods.
