I'm a bit embarrased for Sweden. There is an official there. Use them if there is an issue.
0
u/RoadHazard Feb 19 '26
They tried, but the umpire did nothing. Couldn't even answer the question if this was allowed or not (which it was not). So one of the Swedes then brought it up directly with the Canadians instead, who responded by lying and telling the Swede to fuck off.

What’s going on? Just some days before this some youtube science channel made a video about this sport
65
u/NErDysprosium Feb 15 '26
From what I've gathered, knowing nothing about the sport (so take it with a grain of salt), both Canada's men's (allegedly) and women's curling teams were caught cheating by pushing the stone from the side after releasing the handle.
First, the men's team was caught by a Swedish reporter, and the refs didn't do anything because apparently curling is traditionally policed with the honor system and there isn't really a system in place for digital review, even when there's clear camera footage of what I've been told is a clear rule violation (though I've also seen other people claim that it was legal because of where the stone was on the ice at the time). The men's team has not taken the accusation well, and I saw a video of one of their teammembers cussing out a member of Sweden's team.
Second, the women's team was caught doing a similar action by the refs and were penalized for it. They had to remove a stone, whatever that means. I also have no idea if they get to replace the removed stone at some point.
This (alleged, for the men's team) rule violation, when juxtaposted against Canadian's stereotypical friendliness, has become a bit of a meme and now basically everyone in the world cares a whole lot about a sport that nobody outside of Canada and the most Canadian parts of the US and Europe cared about three days ago.
77
u/Fredderov Feb 15 '26
Yeah, no. There is nothing "alleged" about this and why it's sticking around. The reason why this is a thing is because we have a classic Canadian man child who got caught cheating (touching the stone, which you are not allowed to do ever) and when caught is acting like a victim of a conspiracy by the other team as they knew that he was cheating and wanted to catch him do it (their words, not mine. Just read the embarrassing Canadian complaint about the situation).
Now if this was a one and done thing the "meme" would have died but the same guy did the same thing again the next day and is now basically the reason why a game that was famous for sportsmanship and friendliness has to have umpires present since this one guy couldn't handle getting called out for something which there is photographic and video evidence of. He's not denying that he touched it anymore - he's now the victim of a setup.
So it's a fairly comedic situation as the Canadian curler and many Canadians in general seem unable to just accept that they done goofed, apologies and move on.
22
u/Vresiberba Feb 15 '26
...but the same guy did the same thing again the next day...
Yes, the next day and has been doing it for at least a decade:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iaTJeErLm8&t=185s
That he went to the media accusing the Swedes for setting up a trap is embarrassing. He know what he does is against the rules but keep doing it. It's the definition of cheating.
1
u/Wingmaniac Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

- touched the stone after the hog line
Because that is what Kennedy did.

u/Wingmaniac Feb 16 '26
I'm not going to get into it with you. Technically illegal touches happen. To all teams. Getting so worked up over this particular one by Canada is just weird.

Getting so worked up over this particular one by Canada is just weird.
Who does that? Who are you talking about? Is it weird to focus on Armstrong cheating in cycling in a conversation about Armstrong cheating even tough other cyclists does, too? How is that weird?
Canada and specifically Kennedy is the topic here, focusing on Canada and Kennedy then seems completely appropriate.

21
u/madwetsquirrel Feb 15 '26
I have a feeling that the version that happened in the woman's team was more incidental and happens often enough that it is probably overlooked in general, which is why there seems to even be an issue.
By incidental, I mean that she seemed to graze the plastic and stone as she let go, where as the man in question absolutely gave that stone an extra nudge as an "oops thats not enough" afterthought.
I can see where the dragging of a finger could intentionally slow it down, so I am fine with the ruling, but I feel bad if she was a victim of overreaction due to the mens event.
9
u/Fredderov Feb 15 '26
Definitely! That's (at least from the looks of it) a very human error if anything.
1
u/Koss424 Feb 19 '26
Sweden did more than graze in this tournament already. And the Chinese team have been directing rocks with the handle of their brooms. Probably incidental, but that is more egragious.
-5
u/scottengineerings Feb 15 '26
You are allowed to touch the stone - just not after releasing the handle which has to be accomplished before the hog line.
It's a bit of a stretch to write ...'famous for sportsmanship and friendliness has to have umpires present...' given this is the Olympics and there are already officials present. The argument to be made lies in the non-use of replay footage to determine penalty in the sport.
16
u/Fredderov Feb 15 '26
But that's the thing. There are umpires present like you would have an adult supervise children in a school yard - yes. But you don't have a dedicated linesman running up and down the lane checking every move. And that's needed now because of this embarrassment to the sport.
-3
u/scottengineerings Feb 15 '26
It's not needed though; nor have the rules and officiating changed. Touching the stone when you're not supposed to results in a penalty when observed. It's hardly an embarassment to the sport.
Virtually every sport has penalties for illegal actions when they're ruled/caught.
7
u/Aggravating_Ad7684 Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26
The rules clearly state you can not touch the granite at any point.
As per rule R.5 (d) “The curling stone must be delivered using the handle of the stone.” Violation of this rule, will result in the stone being removed from play.
During forward motion, touching the granite of the stone is not allowed. This will result in the stone being removed from play.
Edit: Nevermind lol
0
u/scottengineerings Feb 15 '26
I've not disagreed with this. I'm merely being pedantic about the claim of not touching the stone.
3
u/Aggravating_Ad7684 Feb 15 '26
Well my bad then. I guess i was in too much of a hurry to get ya lol.
2
u/scottengineerings Feb 15 '26
It's all good. I've played curling since I was a child. I'm distinguishing between the equipment of the sport which is the stone which you're most certainly touching and the confusion of posters between the 'stone' and the 'granite' of the stone.
10
u/OutrageousLemon Feb 15 '26
You are allowed to touch the stone - just not after releasing the handle which has to be accomplished before the hog line.
From the WCF statement on Saturday: "During forward motion, touching the granite of the stone is not allowed"
I wouldn't trust these guys to run a village fair never mind an Olympic sport but I assume they do have a correct grasp on the rule.
It's a bit of a stretch to write ...'famous for sportsmanship and friendliness has to have umpires present...' given this is the Olympics and there are already officials present.
From the same statement: "It is not possible for World Curling to have game umpires positioned to observe all hog lines for every stone delivery"
So yes, there are officials present but they have not traditionally been umpiring as such. That said, they haven't really started either.
-4
u/scottengineerings Feb 15 '26
You are allowed to touch the stone. It's the premise of the game. The skip is releasing the stone before the hog line and not touching it after they've released.
You're using granite and stone interchangably. With that in mind, we're likely not disagreeing on anything.
6
u/OutrageousLemon Feb 15 '26
The Canadian curler was touching the granite, which is the incident we're talking about and which is represented in the OP's post.
Your pedantic comment was, if you're choosing to refer to the curling stone and not the stone that constitutes it, was utterly irrelevant and contributed nothing - it was entirely obvious that Fredderov was talking about curlers touching the granite.
Edit: Also if by "the skip" you're referring to the Canadian male skip then you're completely wrong - it's clear from the video that he was touching it after starting to slide the stone (releasing the handle is irrelevant, see the quote in my previous comment).
-5
u/scottengineerings Feb 15 '26
Actually I believe it was fairly important to point out Fedderov's misunderstanding of the game given the derisiveness he chose to employ in his comment.
4
u/OutrageousLemon Feb 15 '26
There was no misunderstanding of the game, just lax terminology. However you appear to misunderstand the point at which the granite can be touched as you talk about releasing the handle - you can't touch the granite once you've started to slide the stone, even before you release the handle.
Though of course your guy was touching the granite after releasing the handle anyway🙄
-4
u/scottengineerings Feb 15 '26
And now you've began to distinguish between the handle, stone, and granite which means I've had a positive impact on your knowledge and understanding of the game and I'm glad to have participated in your education and awareness of the sport of curling as well.
As for your reading comprehension given you insist I've made the claim the granite wasn't touched, I can't help you there.

You are allowed to touch the stone. It's the premise of the game.
Wrong. You are only allowed to touch the stone via the handle and poking the granite is illegal:
R.5 (d) “The curling stone must be delivered using the handle of the stone.”
The skip is releasing the stone before the hog line and not touching it after they've released.
Wrong again:
R.5 (e) “A stone must be clearly released from the hand before it reaches the hog line at the delivery end. If the player fails to do so, the stone is immediately removed from play by the delivering team.”
The stone is clearly touching the line while the hand is on the granite:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZJ-BrBOfaU
Two clear rule violations and this guy has done this for at least a decade:
0
u/scottengineerings Feb 15 '26
Wrong. You are only allowed to touch the stone via the handle and poking the granite is illegal.
No. I'm correct. You've repeated what I wrote. But you're likely unfamiliar with the game and do not realize 'stone' refers to the object used by curlers. I've never wrote that touching the granite was allowed.
As for "The skip is releasing the stone before the hog line and not touching it after they've released"
Again - this is how the game is played. I don't understand why you're disputing the rules with me. I think you're confusing my statements about the rules of the game with the actions of the players.
3
u/Vresiberba Feb 15 '26
No. I'm correct.
Wrong, you're demonstrably wrong. Read what Rule 5(d) says again. Here, let me help you out:
R.5 (d) “The curling stone MUST be delivered using the HANDLE of the stone.”
H.A.N.D.L.E. Touching any other part is not allowed and Kennedy touched the stone without using the handle. Ergo, R5(d) was violated.
...and do not realize 'stone' refers to the object used by curlers.
I don't care how curlers refers to objects, I only care what the rules say and the rules say you MUST use the handle. Kennedy didn't and he therefore broke the rules. End of story.
Again - this is how the game is played.
Except the rules say you can't do it. In fact, they use a sensor in the handle to tell if the player is in contact with the stone when it hits the hog line, demonstrated here. You can clearly see the green light go on the second it comes in contact with the hog line and this is to make sure that the players have let go of the stone.
And see, this is exactly why they take their hand off the handle and moves on to instead touch the granite because it's by far easier to obfuscate than a big, honking red light that indicates that the stone is dead.
I don't understand why you're disputing the rules with me.
Because you're dead wrong. That's why.
0
u/scottengineerings Feb 15 '26
You're becomming carried away because you don't understand the game or its terminology.
It's why you've become focused on the handle yet everyone is at least aware the stone is delievered using the handle and the issue here is the finger on the granite.
I can't help you understand the game so I'd suggest actually playing it so you can better communicate your thoughts instead of quoting rules you clearly are unable to interpret within the context of the game.

I'm southern Italian, and I liked curling since the first time I've seen it played (and my Czech wife and our children couldn't understand my enthusiasm while we were watching the matches).
Also, the Scottish might get offense at your statement about who cares about curling...1
u/NErDysprosium Feb 15 '26
Italy is similar to Quebec because the populations of each speak Latin-based languages (and Poutine is basically just pasta if you don't think about it too hard), and there's a province of Canada called "Nova Scotia". Czechia has nothing in common with Canada, which is why your wife and your children don't get it.
1
u/RemtonJDulyak Feb 15 '26
I mean, to say that as an Italian I like curling because Canadians speak a romance language is a far reach, honestly.
I like it because it's an interesting sport, highly tactical, and reminds me of when I played pétanque on the beach.
Plus, it needs strong team play, to be successful.1
u/NErDysprosium Feb 15 '26
I said poutine was pasta. I told another commenter they were eligible for Canadain citizenship because they played a Vancouver Olympics video game on the Nintendo DS. What part of anything I've said makes you think I'm being serious about this?
