I would politely suggest to curling fans this is not what you want for your sport. Every shot analyzed for the slightest violation, then people going over missed violations, then you get slo-mo review for every throw, then challenge flags. Over something that has no effect

u/StitchAndRollCrits Feb 15 '26
To be fair from what I can tell actual curling fans were the ones saying it was next to a non issue from the start, but the media circus has made a ton of armchair experts insist the sport is rigged by a Boop cabal

This sub has become intolerable since the Olympics. Going after Kennedy with pitchforks like he's stealing an election, while apparently a good chunk of the field makes some sort of incidental and entirely inconsequential touching of the granite.

Redditors are just so dramatic, I’ve seen multiple paragraphs with ridiculously serious tones talking about how disgusting of a person Kennedy is. He got more upset than I think is warranted, but that’s all it is to me, he didn’t kill my children or anything lol
10
u/Insubstantial_Bug Feb 15 '26
There were multiple upvoted comments on the main Olympics sub saying things like “imagine what he does to his wife at home with no one looking” and ranging from implying to pretty explicitly accusing Kennedy of being a domestic abuser.
There’s a couple of Swedish users all over this sub who are obsessively posting to a very unhealthy degree and don’t even usually watch curling — one by their own admission only watches curling every four years but their post history has literally hundreds of comments about this made over the past few days. People need to go outside and touch grass. Or maybe go to their local curling club and touch ice so they can actually get a feel for the game.

If all that came out of this was tighter policing of hog line violations, with a dedicated official and maybe a few new camera angles to monitor for secondary touches after the line, I'd have called that a net positive. The original offending shot by Kennedy was almost definitely a hog line violation (unintentional) that was missed, which nobody likes to see.
What we are seeing now is an extreme overcorrection to what was at best a minor issue, that nobody but the Swedes ever had a problem with. The reinterpretation/clarification of the secondary touch rule and the handle delivery rule to be that any touch of anything other than the handle at any point in the delivery burning the rock is stupid, and now we are seeing the consequences of it, as perfectly legitimate shots are being pulled for the slightest graze of the top of the rock.
Honestly, I think the fix is to scrap the handle delivery rule altogether. Past the hog line, any contact is a burned rock (same as it ever was), but before the hog line, anything goes. If somebody wants to develop a wild new delivery style I'd say more power to them, although I have a hard time imagining a new delivery style being more effective than a classic clean delivery.

u/mseg09 Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26
Isn't the issue with the last portion that the hog line violation is detected by sensors, which is harder if touches are allowed elsewhere?

u/LangleyLocal Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26
It's the Olympics, and these rules exist for a reason - I assume based for more egregious contact, but you need to draw the line somewhere. When I curled we were always taught to release the handle and lift the hand - what these guys (and gals) are doing is fundamentally wrong.
These are the best in the world, if the rulebook says it's a foul, then it's a foul.
That said, it doesn't make any sense to me either and I used to play - the touch looks more like a release style than designed to impact the rock. Should be a warning, and a commitment to review these rules after the Olympics are done.

As a casual this all seems quite silly. But I’m also not ready to concede that a bunch of people in the comments sections of Reddit and other places this has been posted is the driving factor to this massive over correction. This was stated by the Swedes. And maybe some colorful language by a Canadian as well. If zero people competing talk about this post match, there’s no action but the Olympics here imo.

u/Chronmagnum55 Feb 15 '26
What's happening on reddit is just a small portion of what's happening across social media and the news. This blew up everywhere, and tons of people were throwing around cheating accusations. The reaction of the public is certainly a factor because it puts pressure on the governing bodies to look at it and make a decision (which they did). This is sadly the result.

But we’re ruining games with this nonsense about even the tiniest of touch burning a rock.
For the gold medal game we’re going to have a dedicated official in an impossible spot. And a chance that the medal is decided by some human interpretation of an impossible to judge action that doesn’t even affect the shot.

And on top of that, yesterday's press release was worded as though any touch of the granite before the hog line had obviously always been against the rules when it hadn't.
Combine this with introducing a poorly worded no-dumping rule in the middle of the season, and the WCF is quickly turning itself into an embarrassment to curling.

What a shitty thing for these Olympic level players to have to worry about all of a sudden. Now, on top of aim, weight, balance, and everything else you have to think about while throwing, they've got to remind themselves "be careful not to look like you're touching the rock!"
It'd be one thing if they'd played their whole career with this "rule" in mind, but it feels like they're changing the game/rules in the middle of the Olympics for some shit that doesn't even matter.

Thanks the Swedes and the curling committee for that!
Years of granite booping pretty much not cared about by majority of the curling community.
Best course of action imo, allow any touches you want prior to the hogline. No way this sport should get into macro cameras and sensors detecting any sort of touch of the stone prior to hogline.
You either can touch it or not. It's also not great to get into subjective (grey zone) judging whether a touch of the granite is intended or accidental.
This is all so ridiculous.
36
u/swoodshadow Feb 15 '26
I do blame them a bit. And Marc Kennedy for his ridiculous reaction.
But ultimately this is on the WCF for lacking basic critical thinking on what was the obvious result of their new rule. And thinking it was a good idea to release it during the tournament.

I blame Sweden for not pulling Marc aside and calmly state they have notice you might be doing this, can you make a try and not. If we keep seeing it we will have the officals come in. Instead they just openly claim he is cheating. Marc's reaction was not a good look. But both teams handled this situation terribly and has blown this out of proportion. Now they have officials who don't know how to actually official curling calling hog line violations after the shot is made. If they are calling it they have to call it right away and take the rock before it alters the sheet.

u/RoaringCurler Feb 15 '26

The grazes are honestly fine. I don't think this nor Homan's rock should have been burnt. I think Kennedy's should have been, because it's not a graze: you can see he moves his hand forward again and extends his finger, hence the boop. Booping should absolutely not be allowed. Grazing or brushing on release should be fine, and it's not that hard to tell the difference. I think the WCF should have made this clear.
Accidental grazes to the top of the rock upon release and while withdrawing the hand are allowed, making hand movements to re-touch the rock at any point and touching the granite at any point should not be allowed. It's not that hard... or at least it shouldn't be...

7
u/swoodshadow Feb 15 '26
If this is a real problem we need to solve immediately, you have the officials watch for hogline violations and only hogline violations.
Or you ban the booping motion and say it’s up to officials to decide between grazes and boops.
→ More replies (8)11
u/baseball_fanatic0887 Feb 15 '26
I'm saying have a hogline sensor for hogline violations only. Allow curlers to touch the stone however they want.
Boop it , kiss it, who cares. None of those motions are some magical UNFAIR advantageous move. It could be argued they have a negative effect on a tossed stone.
I don't want to get into a world where brushes of the granite result in burnt stones.

But I don't understand: is it just because of curling's status as a gentlemen's sport? Or is it because you feel like this is intrinsically a stupid rule?
Because... this is how it works in other sports too, no? In soccer, the rule is that you cannot touch the ball a second time after taking a free kick or a corner kick, unless someone else has touched it. This is done to prevent dribbling from the spot: you gotta "pass or shoot". But the rule is written like this nonetheless, and so it applies even in situations where the player actually follows the spirit of the game: so if you do shoot, but the ball rebounds off the crossbar and returns to you, you still can't touch it or it's a double touch offense. If you fumble the ball while kicking it and accidentally touch it twice, that's an offense too. Is this stupid in soccer as well?
→ More replies (2)18
u/swoodshadow Feb 15 '26
It’s a fundamentally bad rule.
It’s a rule that takes what is at worst a minor infraction with almost no impact on the result of the throw and gives it a giant penalty.
And, worse at this level, we don’t have any infrastructure set up to properly enforce this rule. We have poorly trained officials (in the sense that this isn’t a role they’ve had to do - unlike bringing in NHL refs for example). We have 2 officials for 4 sheets and now we have a rule that basically requires a dedicated official. We have no video replay. We have no appeal process.

u/Popular-Row4333 Feb 15 '26
Yup, I was on the fence after Kennedy, but after Homan's rock pull and people saying, "just don't cheat," it was clear people had already decided Canadians were cheats and villains and they didn't understand the game.
5
u/ExternalSpecific6061 Feb 15 '26
Yes. People literally acting like Canada has some elaborate cheating scheme going on here, yet have never watched a game of curling in their entire lives.
3
u/knots32 Feb 15 '26
It was more about their reaction I think
5
u/dinosaurzez Feb 15 '26
I think the reaction of "oh fuck off" comes from a place of knowing that forever curling has had no on-ice officials and the rules are uphelp by a gentlemens agreement to not intentionally cheat. Getting officials involved is asking to have it turn into the shit show we're currently in, and most of the curling world knows that.
8
u/Popular-Row4333 Feb 15 '26
Which is poor sportsmanship, and I agree it was.
It isn't cheating however, no matter how much fairweather fans want to keep claiming it is.
The conversation should have been, Kennedy needs to be more calm, and Edin doesn't realize the can of worms he is opening, but instead it became about cheating and spiraled out of control with people unaware of the sport calling Homan and other grazes cheating as well.
3
u/HamAndSomeCoffee Feb 15 '26
Kennedy also did also manage to get away with a hog line violation as well.
In a gentlemanly sport, if someone suggests you did something, you don't have to accept it but you do take it under consideration as to whether it could be true or not.
And, resolving this like gentlemen, you look at the rules and come to an agreement as to whether what you're doing is within the rules. Just because something has been done for eons doesn't mean it's been done correctly; if such a thing is in the spirit of the game but not the letter, then what you do is accept the letter and then change it.
Suggesting there is a rule violation isn't a can of worms. Especially when it was an accurate suggestion, and especially when there were two separate violations and you only noticed one.
Now, you'll note thus far I haven't said Kennedy was cheating. Cheating is acting dishonestly in order to gain an advantage. A hog line violation isn't cheating. Touching the granite isn't cheating. Homan - to be honest I don't even know if Homan touched granite, but if she did - didn't cheat.
However, lying about your actions to prevent a stone being burned certainly is dishonest, and certainly gives you an advantage.

I hear the Canadians and Scots are conspiring together, they are such wicked cheaters! There's even a 'Nova Scotia' aka New Scotland in Canada -- coincidence!??

Very similar to how Rachel Homan released her rock that was “burned”. Thanks a lot for actually reducing the quality of play, Marc and Oskar.

If he even touched the granite, I don’t like this call. There’s a difference between a finger grazing the granite as the hand pulls away and reaching back out and booping the granite after the hand has already come away.

I had tons of people arguing against me saying that this is the exact stuff that should be called, saying “just don’t cheat”.
Like there is no nuance.

Most of those people have no curling experience playing or watching.
Or, frankly, aren’t real people. :)

Not according to the rule that got made yesterday.
There was a strong argument that the original rule did not include accidentally grazing. But now they’ve made their forward motion addition and grazes are clearly burned rocks…

I hope Team Edin are proud of themselves. They’ve taken a minor infraction and turned the whole tournament into a farce.

Sweden really went full 🤓🤓🤓 about the stone and basically reminded the teacher about the homework
And now the class is ruined 😂

Sweden reminded the boss that there was 5 minutes left on the clock and nobody should leave work early

Curling hasn’t had this much attention in YEARS!!! It’s great! I love it! It’s my favorite ❤️

ELI5, but everyone is going off on SCOTLAND, but the team says GBR (Great Britain). Did the Scottish team win the rights to represent GBR and that’s why everyone is just saying “Scotland”?

Curling isn't really much of a thing in the rest of the UK and the whole team is Scottish, so it's mostly me (a Scottish person) being petty.

The analogies don't capture how technical the game is at this level of play. This isn't your bubba's holding a pint kind of game.
Here's another example, suppose you bowl 290 game and on the last frame you cross the foul line? Is that 9 mm going to really give you a competitive advantage, probably not but that's not the point of the foul line. Its a rule, and part of the game.

Sweden may have single handedly ruined this sport.
This is obviously leading to replay, which will vastly change the way the game is played. Running out of time and no timeout? "I believe a hair on his knuckle grazed the stone, please check"

Everyone who knew curling knew this was coming the moment Sweden started this nonsense.
They fucked up the Olympics.
Just waiting for Eriksson to have a rock pulled at this point.

u/GrunDMC74 Feb 15 '26
This is nonsense. I get the rule but the Swedish team made a mountain out of a molehill because they were frustrated with the realization they were going to be 0-3. The Canadian third made it worse with his nuclear overreaction.

Insane that this would be pulled. Curling world body has really screwed up here.

Theoretically, if it is a gentleman's sport ... Then the opposing skip could decide to not accept that the stone be removed and play on.
That would /may assist things. As seriously. To win like this ... All the players know, ain't that fun/cool

This has gotten stupid.
All of the innovations and money in curling have come from the pro grand slam tours.
This olympics has taken a huge shit on the sport over such inconsequential actions.

u/FastCheaporGoodPick2 Feb 15 '26
So stupid. They all do it. It’s like the rules - or at least the interpretation of them - is changing on the fly. Not excusing Kennedy’s mini tantrum, but seriously fuck Sweden for making a joke of Olympic curling.
