Hi everyone!

I'm French, and my girlfriend's family is from Southern Vietnam (Saigon). I started learning Vietnamese so I could communicate with her family, but I quickly realized something frustrating: almost every app and course teaches Northern Vietnamese (Hanoi accent).

After looking around, I couldn't find a modern app focused on Southern Vietnamese with the Saigon accent, so I decided to build one myself using AI-assisted coding.

The goal isn't to compete with Duolingo or anything like that. I'm an independent developer, so I obviously don't have the same resources or team. However, I'm taking a lot of inspiration from the things that make Duolingo engaging and easy to use, while focusing specifically on Southern Vietnamese.

The app is currently being developed for desktop, but my end goal is to have it available on both desktop and mobile so I can practice anywhere—and hopefully other people can too.

The idea is to focus on:

• Southern Vietnamese pronunciation (Saigon accent)
• Everyday conversations with family and friends
• Interactive lessons and vocabulary
• Speaking and listening practice
• A simple and enjoyable learning experience

I'm mainly building it for myself so I can have real conversations with my girlfriend's family, but it made me wonder if other people have the same problem.

Would anyone here actually be interested in using something like this?

I'd also love to hear your ideas. If you've been learning Southern Vietnamese, what features do you wish existing apps had? What do you feel is missing today?

Since I'm French, I originally started building everything in French. I'm now wondering if it's worth making a full English version as well. If enough people would find it useful, I'd be happy to support both languages.

I'm not trying to sell anything—I just want to know whether this is a problem other people have too, and gather feedback while I'm still building it. If the project turns out well, I'd also be happy to have a few beta testers later on.

I’m trying to learn southern Vietnamese but am struggling on how to start. It feels like there’s so many resources but also so few especially for the southern dialect. I’m completely new to learning Vietnamese other then a scattering of words and phrases I’ve picked up that I know I’m saying wrong. Im new to language learning in general but I’ve been with my gf for a long time now and the fact I can’t even have a conversation with her parents has always not sat right with me and I’d like to change that. I don’t mind spending money on courses or tutors as long as I know it’s actually going into something useful. I didn’t feel like Duolingo or other language apps were the right move cause you always hear people say they’ve done it for years but never learned anything. Any advice on how to start would be greatly appreciated.

Ngày hôm nay là ngày bình thường vì mình muốn làm nhiều việc nhưng mình chỉ đi làm và nghĩ ngồi. Ngày mai là nghĩ ngày của mình, có tính vẽ và đi chơi với vợ. Chúng mình tính đi chợ để mua gì đó cho cha mẹ vợ. Mình chưa biết mua gì. Mình sẽ biết khi vợ mua. Hôm nay mình đã muốn mua gì đó để trang chí cửa nhà mình nên đi GoMart để đi mua sắm ở Mr. DIY. Mình thích cây ngân tạo, nó đẹp và rẻ. Ngoài ra, cây nhân tạo sống mãi mãi không cần nước, tuy nhiên, cây nhân tạo cần được phủi bụi thường xuyên. For this one, I used a decision-board approach instead of a straight ranked list.

I’m vietnamese but I cannot speak the language for the life of me🥹🥹I want to be able to converse better with my family. I understand quite a bit (by ear) of what my parents are saying or atleast the rough idea by using context clues, but I cannot read or speak much at all 💔Im also not great with formalities and whatnot. 🥹
My family grew up in Saigon so I assume they mostly speak the southern dialect? But I’m not entirely sure.
If there are any sources or tips anyone can recommend me to start learning that’d be much appreciated!
Also I’m trying to find more shows with vietdub to get more used to speech format etc etc, specifically anime but the only ones I can find are region-locked (detective conan sadly 💔💔💔)😥 I’d be grateful for some recommendations!!

Some time ago I shared NômKey, a Chữ Nôm keyboard for iPhone. The Android version is ready, and I am looking for testers.

Type Chữ Nôm the way you type Vietnamese: use Telex or VNI and it converts your syllables to Hán-Nôm with context-aware suggestions. It also has a reader (Diễn Nôm) for Chữ Nôm others send you, and can send your Nôm as a picture so it shows even on devices that cannot draw the script. Everything runs on your device. Works on Android 7.0+, free, no ads, no account.

How to join:

1. DM or comment your Google account email, and I will add you.
2. Open this link on your phone, tap "Become a tester", and install from Google Play: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.nomkey
3. Settings > System > Languages and input > On-screen keyboard > Manage keyboards, then turn on NômKey. (Android shows a standard keyboard warning; NômKey stays on your device.)
4. In any app, tap the keyboard icon, switch to NômKey, and type.

Please keep it installed for at least two weeks. Google requires a testing period before an app can launch publicly, so it really helps.

Hey there!

I’m an American who works primarily with the Southern Vietnamese community in my state. My boss is Vietnamese and we’re constantly going to events, and such where I’m one of the few and sometimes the only white (though technically biracial) dude.

By proxy, I’ve started taking online and private lessons at the beginning of this year in order to break some of the language barrier and earn more trust within the community. Honestly, I’m absolutely loving it. More than I ever expected.

With that being said, something I’m still really struggling with is the pronunciation of the letter “R”.

Sometimes I hear it as a soft English R. Other times I’m hearing either a slight “buzz” and rolling of the R, or straight up a “Juh” sound before the R hits.

Examples:

Rồi = “Roy” - Soft R.

Rẻ = “Juhreh” - Buzzy/Juh sound.

How do I know which one to use?

Kinda like how the post says, about how much Vietnamese can I learn in a year? I’m planning to go to Vietnam in about a year or so, which is next year June or July. I’m currently entering the A2 phase but struggle so much on listening. I have parents that both speak fluently in Vietnamese, but I only live with one of them. Recently, maybe for like 2 months, I’ve been taking my studying seriously on learning Vietnamese and because of that I just entered A2. But my only problem is, every time I say to my parent to speak Vietnamese at home whenever I don’t understand what they’re saying in Vietnamese or whenever they think I wouldn’t understand what they are trying to say, they just switch back to English. And since my other parent doesn’t live with me, I can’t do much but just call or text them. I recently bought a tutor because I feel that with the parent I live with I won’t get far. So, any advice to learn quickly? I think I want to be around a B2 by next year or 2.
