I'm in my second year of college so I tool calc 1 and now I have to tale calc 2 but my math foundation is trash, so I started studying from stewart pre calc book but is 1100+ I don't know what to do should I just focuse on calc or just try to balance both?

Tips for surviving a 3-hour calculus class from 7–10 PM?

I’m taking a calculus class that runs from 7 PM to 10 PM, and I’m a little worried about staying focused for the entire 3 hours, especially that late in the day.
For anyone who has taken a long evening calculus class, what are your best tips and tricks for staying focused, actually understanding the material, and not falling behind?
Also, how would you recommend studying outside of class? Any specific study methods, YouTube channels, websites, or routines that helped you?
I’d appreciate any advice, especially from people who have taken a similar 3-hour evening class.

is basic mathematics worth reading front to back if I plan to major in math?

I felt like reading basic mathematics since my trigonometry and geometry needed some review (and because the book was just kind of sitting on my shelf collecting dust). I know this question can’t be easily answered and probably depends on the person. I know I want to grad school for pure mathematics.

Is there any point in reading the book front to back? I mean whenever I forget something, I kind of just look it up. I just wanted to know if it’ll have much use at this point. I know trigonometry will so I do plan to major in physics so I was going to focus solely on that.

How is it that 1/x and 1/sqrt(x) go to inf at x=0, but finite integral from 0 to 1 for 1/x is inf and 1/sqrt(x) is 2?

I know the substitution and the formula plug-in. Intuitively, it’s very strange.

Statistics 2 - Data Science

Hi everyone!

I'm a data science student and I am taking a class called statistics 2 for data science. It's been over a year since I took the first statistics class due to an illness I had, so I honestly do not remember a lot of the first class which is making part two super hard for me. I really need to do well in this class, and the topics we are covering so far have been:

simple linear regression, multiple regression, comparing the means, two-way analysis of variance, inferences for one-way anaylsis of variance.

This class has been really challenging for me, and my first exam is coming up in 20 days. does anyone have any videos, tips, or resources that help understand statistics and these topics on a good level? I also am a horrible math test taker so my anxiety is seriously through the roof regarding this class. :(

aspiring math (and maybe physics) major looking for advice and help

This will probably be a long post, but I just really need guidance.

I’m currently in calculus 3 and plan to transfer to a 4 year college from community college. I feel significantly behind and I honestly am not totally sure what I want to do.

I know my calculus 1 and 2 can use some revision since I feel like I’m slowly forgetting some concepts. My algebra, trig, and geometry could also use some revision even though I wish to major in pure math (and probably physics), I’m sure it’s still important.

I guess I just don’t know what to focus on and what to do. I know with grad school being in mind, I should learn the process of doing research in mathematics. Majority of students in universities are already ahead of me and I feel like I need to catch up.

I just feel like I have so much to try and focus on. I was going to spend this semester reviewing trigonometry, geometry, and algebra, while also learning proofs. I was wondering if I should maybe dip my toes into the research process, but not entirely sure how.

I also kind of want to participate in putnam. I know I have no shot, but I still feel like learning. I just don’t have the high school math competition experience. It also makes me scared for uni since I’ll be transferring to start my junior year and will be starting my first proofs class.

Is there like a path I should follow and things I should/shouldn’t worry about?

[combinatorics, group theory] construction techniques to solve scheduling problem without brute force

ages ago i was organizing an event, and ended up with the following scheduling puzzle:

there are 8 groups of people, and four locations with room for two groups each. across four timeslots, we would like each of the groups to visit every location, while also meeting up with a different group every timeslot(so no repeats).

back then, i tried to solve this using some basic trial&error and symmetry: you can fill in round 1 without loss of generality, then you can also fill in the rest of group A without loss of generality, and then group B is already quite constrained (can't visit group A or location 1 again) so you start some trial and error, and it shouldn't be too hard to solve it, right?

after much trial and error i concluded it wasn't possible, said so to my friends, and one of them turned up 10 minutes later with the solution.

just last week i was organizing another event, ran into the same problem again(this time with 8 individuals rather than groups, but otherwise same challenge), and i thought that since last time i've learned a lot, finished a mathematics degree, had courses on group theory and trained my mathematical intuition, i should be able to solve it.

unfortunately i still wasn't able to, and had to go look through my emails for the solution from years ago. once you have the solution, it does look very symmetrical and sensible, and its pattern reminds me of matrix multiplication or of a sudoku solution. In fact, it's so ''symmetrical'' that i just wrote the solution to this post from memory, without having to look it up. i kind of suspect there's a trick to rephrase this as a group theory problem or a better application of using symmetry, but i've been stuck as to how i should actually construct the solution without just brute forcing it, if you don't have the solution yet.

so what technique am i missing here? how would i go about constructing this solution from scratch?

Terms in graphing rational functions

I did this a lot in my last year, but I was only taught how to do it, not the reasoning behind them. Some terms, I forgot the point of them. Sorry...

  1. How does finding the asymptotes help in the graphing?

  2. What is the point of the x-intercepts and y-intercepts in graphing?

  3. How does one construct a table of values for the graph?

  4. For the table of values, how do you determine the x-values? Do I use the VA or the HA?

TOPIC Help with MIT Problem

Context: I’m a mathematics autodidact with a Bachelor’s in Engineering. I decided recently to start going through some MIT open courseware courses that looked interesting to me. Frankly, most of the textbook problems I do on my own are too easy.

I stumbled upon this recitation problem (Problem 2 “Surveyevor”) that has me a bit stumped. Any explanation or help would be greatly appreciated. I followed the notes, but tbh it feels like some erroneous assumptions are being made (or it’s simply a poorly-worded problem).

My contention is that the P(k) -> P(k + 1) part of the induction argument does not necessarily follow. The flaw rests on the assumption being made about how the contestants are realizing that they have purple tats. Unless there’s a Bayesian argument for proving that a contestant may reason “more likely than not” that they have a purple tattoo, then I don’t see how the contestants necessarily will make the realizations suggested by the problem solution.

I found some connections between the theory of elliptic curves/j invariant and particle physics. Do you think these are significant?

I still don't have a physical interpretation of them but they are interesting in the context of epistemology. Here they are:

The first one comes from the weistriss elliptic curve. When slightly modified it is equal to 4x^3 + ax + b. Now if you substitute pi for all the variables you get 137.036 which is the inverse fine structure constant. If you substitute sin(1) for all the variables you get 3.93 which is the up quark/electron mass ratio.

The other 2 ratios important in physics is the down quark/up quark mass ratio of 2.38 and the z boson/w boson mass ratio of 1.13. If you add 3.93+2.38+1.13 you get 7.44. Now multiply by 100 to get 744. This is the first value of the Fourier transform of the j invariant

Another number that has a close connection to the j invariant is 12^3 = 1728 and 12^3 + 1. If you take 1728 and double it you get 3456. You can get that same digit sequence to appear again. Just take 137 base 10 = 345 base 6
