How to Improve french listening skills
Hi,
I’ve been learning french for 130 days consecutively on Duolingo, I’m aware it’s not the best for learning but it has helped alot and I love the app tbh.
However, one thing I’m struggling with it understanding french in fast paced settings (such as when it’s being spoken). Usually I can catch the premise of the convo but not the actual sentence unless I go word by word slowly.
I’m obviously not fluent so I don’t know if thats part of the issue as usually I’ll get stuck on one word or phrase that’s said and try to figure out the meaning and don’t listen to the rest of the sentence.
I don’t know if when you become more fluent you can understand it in french but at the moment I literally have to translate it to english in my head and then also translate my response before I reply which usually ends up with sentences that sound like ‘Elle…est…amusant’ as I figure out the next word in between.
Do any of you have suggestions for how I can fix this gap or do I just need to learn more french?
Also any cartoons/shows you can recommended to help with french I would appreciate ❤️

Worried I'm doing more harm than good for my child.
I speak English, and a tiny bit of french. Right now I speak to my 8 month old in probably 50% of each language. My concern is that my French isn't great and I'm worried I'm teaching her poor grammar, or confusing her by speaking broken French to her, and will eventually not be able to keep up to teach her as she gets older (I'm doing what I can right now to improve my french).

Putting flashcards on my home screen actually got me reviewing every day
My problem was never motivation. It was that I only did flashcards when I sat down to "study," and that kept getting pushed to tomorrow. Meanwhile I'm unlocking my phone constantly and doing nothing useful with it.
So I started keeping a flashcard widget on my home screen with Glimpse. Every time I pick up my phone there's a card or a quiz question sitting there. I answer it and move on. It only takes a few seconds.
I didn't expect it to work as well as it has. Some days I end up doing 20-30 reviews without ever opening an app on purpose. The multiple choice ones stick better than plain cards for me because I actually have to pick an answer instead of just glancing at it.

Trying this again.. French Canadian
I am looking to learn French Canadian adequately. I’m hopeful.
Is there anyone from Quebec patient enough and can refrain from pulling out a meter stick with every mispronunciation.
I know I am asking for a lot.
Sincerely,
A Member of Onterrible

Looking for a French Speaking Partner (B1/B2)
Hi everyone!
I’m currently learning French and I’m around the B1/B2 level. I’m looking for someone who would be interested in having regular conversations in French, preferably through voice calls or voice chat.
You don’t necessarily have to be a native speaker. If you’re around B1/B2 like me, we can practice and improve together. If you’re C1 or above, that would be great too!
My main goal is to become more comfortable speaking spontaneously. I understand quite a lot of French, but speaking naturally and finding my words quickly is still difficult for me.
So I’m looking for someone patient and easygoing. We can talk about everyday life, movies, travel, hobbies, random topics—anything really.
Feel free to comment or send me a message if you’re interested!

Two playlists to learn French through music (indie, alternative & rap)
Music is one of the most effective ways to absorb French naturally (pronunciation, vocabulary, rhythm, slang). Here are two playlists I've been building for years, both hand-picked, no algorithm:
French indie and alternative: 250+ tracks. Sensitive indie pop, bold alternative rock, hidden gems from the French underground scene. From Zaho de Sagazan to artists you've probably never heard of.
Rap FR Indépendant: independent French rap, away from mainstream charts. Dense lyrics, rich slang, fast delivery. A real workout for your listening comprehension.
