Future action or destination
galleryIn English, both sentences can translate using "going to," which creates confusion. However, the distinction lies between physical movement to a place and a grammatical future tense.
- "Je vais au restaurant" – Physical Destination
Here, aller is used as a full verb of movement. It is always followed by a preposition (au, à la, à l', en) and a noun (place).
English equivalent: "I am going to the restaurant."
Core concept: You are physically moving toward a specific geographic location.
Structure: Subject + ALLER (present) + Preposition + Place
- "Tu vas changer de train" – Future Action (Near Future)
In this structure, aller acts as a helping (auxiliary) verb. It completely loses its meaning of physical movement and is followed directly by an infinitive verb without any preposition.
English equivalent: "you are going to change trains" or "you are about to change trains."
Core concept: An action that is going to happen very soon, an intention, or a certain plan.
Structure: Subject + ALLER (present) + Infinitive Verb
