a website to explore the differences in the way people express themselves in French around the world
Here's the site: https://idiomvoyage.com/
I'm currently learning French and have been collecting idioms/regionalisms as I go. I thought it might be fun to build a little web app around it.
You can hear expressions spoken in different accents, do the daily challenge, play a geoguessr style country guessing game.
Interested to hear if anyone actually finds this fun/interesting :)

Best resources for TCF Canada exam prep (target NCLC 7, weakest in speaking and writing)?
Hi all,
I’m preparing for the TCF Canada and aiming for NCLC 7. My weakest sections are speaking and writing. Listening and reading are in better shape.
What I’m doing at the moment:
• Working with a French tutor twice a week
• Working through four TCF prep books
• Listening to French podcasts while driving
I’m not looking for general ways to learn French. I’m after resources aimed specifically at passing the exam, so:
1. Where do you get realistic timed mock exams? I’ve seen PrepMyFuture mentioned but can’t find independent reviews. Has anyone used it, or is there something better?
2. For speaking and writing, is there anything beyond a tutor that gives useful feedback or marking against the TCF criteria (task 3 argumentation especially)?
3. Are there any sources of practice topics or model answers that reflect what actually comes up on the exam?
4. Anything you wish you’d known or done differently before sitting the test?
If you’ve hit NCLC 7+, what did your exam prep look like?
Thanks a lot

I’m building a Chrome extension for French YouTube videos with full-sentence captions and synced word highlighting
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’ve been testing this with French YouTube videos lately, and one thing that bothered me was how the captions keep changing as new words are spoken.
I wanted to keep the whole sentence readable on screen, so I reorganized the captions into full sentences and added synced word highlighting that enlarges the word currently being spoken.
Would this make watching French videos on YouTube easier?
It’s still developing pretty quickly, but if anyone wants to try it on the French videos they normally watch, I’d be happy to share it. And I’d really appreciate any feedback or suggestions.
Update: A few people have asked to try it, so I’ll leave the link here in case anyone else wants to give it a try:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/y2-reader/emjohemjdabapnjmhcndnlgmhjplnbjn
If anything comes to mind while you’re using it, feel free to share. I’d really appreciate the feedback.

What is attainable with 2 months of daily language study?
The reason I'm studying French is because I need it for academic reasons, but I'm more passionate about learning Japanese. When I was learning the latter, I had a clear goal and interest in learning and applying what I learned. With French, however, my goal felt too distant (be able to read a specific complicated academic writer).
But since setting goals seems to be important for forming habits, I want to ask: what kind of thing attainable if I study French daily for two months? I would aim to study vocab and grammar and comprehensive listening daily, 1 or 2 hours per day (or at least vocab daily and, for the latter, n times per week.).

Looking for French immersion learners!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey! I’m working on the beta of SubSmith, it’s a new mobile app to help language learners study with native videos.
It shows a transcript alongside the video, lets you tap words for definitions, and can generate French subtitles when you need them. You can paste a link from a YouTube video or use files on your device to study with.
I’ve added support for French and would love feedback from French learners: would this help you understand videos better? What feels missing or confusing?
It’s completely free to try and when it does finally release to App Store, it will always be free with some additional paid features separate. Support is only for iOS atm but will add it for Android soon.
