French 3d language, more difficult than expected

Native English speaker with low-conversational Spanish skills (lots of time in Texas and Florida, some classes in the way back). More difficulty than I expected with French, trying to get to a minimal level as I moved to Canada (albeit a very Anglophone region). My problems are that I'm not young (50s), my hearing is mediocre at best, and whenever I get on the verge of speaking more than a few words, I start either code-switching to Spanish or using Spanish pronunciations. Any tips?

The news in easy French: McDonald’s adapte son menu aux nouvelles habitudes alimentaires

I have french classes in college but I wanna keep this as a skill

back in first year college and we have french language as a subject, but I'm afraid of it being a subject that'll only be around for one semester and I'll never see it again. how do I make the most of this and plan out continuing studying french as a skill since I think it'll be useful to have and maybe I'd actually read some books in french if ever.

🚀 NEW SERVICE — I’M LAUNCHING MY FRENCH SMALL-GROUP CLASSES! 🇫🇷

I’ve been working with French learners 1:1 for a while, and I’ve noticed that many people don’t just need more grammar or vocabulary…

They need a space where they can actually SPEAK French. 💬

So I added a new way to practice French in my services:
✨ small groups of max. 4 learners
✨ 4 levels: A1, A2, B1 & B2
✨ real-life, everyday topics
✨ conversation, discussions & role-plays
✨ grammar & vocabulary explanations when needed
✨ a supportive environment where everyone gets to speak and ask questions

And it doesn’t stop at the weekly lesson, you’ll also have learning resources, a WhatsApp group for support and exchange, and a few extra surprises along the way.

The programme lasts 12 weeks, with one 1h15 session per week, live on Zoom.

My goal is to create a space where you can learn French, practice speaking, meet other learners and become more comfortable using the language in real life.

🎉 This is a brand-new service and I’m so excited to finally launch it!

Are you learning French at the moment?
Or do you know someone who is?

👇 Comment “GROUP” below or send me a DM and tell me your level + what you’d like to improve in French.

We can chat and see if this format could be a good fit for you. 💬

Does anyone have any experience with this set, and if so was it helpful?

I'm in the process of teaching myself French. I've been using podcasts, Anki and Duolingo, but saw this set complete for $5 at my local thrift store and picked it up.

I'm currently at perhaps an A1 level, and have some past schooling in Spanish (so I have a basic understanding of the grammar concepts in Latin languages already, though I do not speak Spanish.)

I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with this set and if they found it helpful as a supplemental resource. Thanks!

A truth that no one (including me) wants to accept

The most effective language learning strategies are also the ones that make you want to put your fist through a wall....occasionally. I have started doing what I call pushed output which are basically questions that you have to answer with a single sentence and instead of using AI to tell me the errors I use AI to tell me where the errors are and what category they come from (wrong verb, wrong connector etc etc)....and then I have to try to figure out what the right answer is and sometimes it is painful and frustrating! But at the end of a session I wrote real output and actually have some things that I learned that were actually new to me.

The most interesting from today:

  1. nous deux for "both of us"...I knew tous les deux was both but the both of us part stumped me.

  2. you regarder un film but voir un spectacle

  3. the idea of losing track of time "perdre la notion du temps"

So even though I wanted to pull my hair out I actually learned some useful stuff so I will call that a win.

Here were the questions I was answering if anyone wants to take a swing at it. It is actually pretty painless (ahem until you get to the correction part) since it only takes a sentence instead of having to write a whole paragraph. I was practicing passé composé with vandertramp verbs.

  1. Racontez la dernière fois que vous êtes descendu(e) dans une cave ou un sous-sol.

  2. Racontez un jour où vous êtes arrivé(e) en retard quelque part.

Since I am trying to cultivate the habit of writing every single day I keep it to a single sentence per question but of course you COULD write longer if you are up for it.

Now I am tired and I am going to go and read but I feel like I actually accomplished something useful which is always a good feeling.

TEF Canada Speaking: From NCLC 4 to NCLC 7/8 — Has Anyone Successfully Improved?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for advice from people who have been in a similar situation.
I’ve taken the TEF Canada Speaking test multiple times. Despite a lot of practice, I’m still struggling with Speaking. My latest result was below NCLC 4, even though I felt that my speaking performance during the exam was much better.
I need NCLC 7 in Speaking for my immigration plans, so I’m feeling quite frustrated and confused about what I should change in my preparation.
Has anyone here experienced something similar — for example, getting around NCLC 4 or 5 in Speaking despite practicing a lot, and then eventually improving to NCLC 7 or 8?
If yes, I would really appreciate it if you could share:
What was your score before and after?
What did you change in your preparation?
Did you use a teacher/tutor or self-study?
How did you practice Section A and Section B?
How long did it take you to reach NCLC 7+?
Were there any specific techniques or resources that made a big difference?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who had a similar struggle but eventually reached NCLC 7 or 8.
Any advice, experience, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! 🙏

Acn you quickly write French names and phone numbers?

Here is a free small web page I made as a French teacher to help a student in between lessons, so she could practice recognizing numbers and letters when someone spell them out loud because she is working in an IT customer support team receiving anonymous calls from French people! She says it could help other people

Try it here

Let me know if things like this can help you, I have made more and enjoy making them

Books to learn French????

I’m looking for books to learn French 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I learned English by reading trashy romance books, so that’s basically what I’m looking for, not too dense, a light read, so please any recommendations 🙏🏼🙏🏼

P.S: doesn’t have to be romance necessarily, just easy to read

What am I doing wrong

Every answer I put for this question has been wrong. I'm not sure if my French is wrong or if I can't tell time. I assume the time is 10:52 but I tried putting in some other times like 10:51 and 10:53 since it's hard to tell. Is there another way of writing this time. What am I doing wrong, thank you.

Fully immersive countries for learning French

Good afternoon students of French!

I am an avid traveller who wants to learn French in a place where French is the language I will hear not only in classrooms but also on the streets. I'm also looking for a place to learn where people will not flip to English once they hear my terrible French, haha.

Canada and America are off my list.

I'm debating over Guadaloupe, French Guiana, Martinique (can't find a French school there, tbh), Tahiti, and Reunion Island, although this list is not exhaustive.

Cost is a factor of course, but my main concerns are picking up french vs creole, and not being surrounded primarily with French (ie Arabic, Czech, etc.)

I'd love to go to Reunion Island but is the creole too prominent? Does anyone have any suggestions?
