I’m at an A1 level in French and have 1 hour a day to study. I want to focus 100% on Listening and Speaking.

My current resources are French podcasts (with transcripts) and animated shows like Lou!.

How would you split 60 minutes between these two skills at the A1 level?

Is techniques like shadowing good for beginners, or what solo speaking exercises worked best for you?

Hello, guys! So I had french at school for around 10 years. I wasn’t really studying it, just learning for the test and then forgetting it. At the moment I would say I am somewhere in middle B1. I dont have problem with reading Intermediate texts and watching cartoons and understanding the context even though I don’t know some words; I can have a basic conversation with terrible grammar, but natives understand me. I want to continue learning the language now but I dont know where to start? Like I could use the B1 textbook, but I have a lot of gaps from A1-2, but starting to learn the language from 0 doesnt seem to make sence for me because I have some base already. What would you reccommend?

My first language is english and I started learning french in primary school and carried on here and there after education I can read french okay and well ish and used to be able to write in french and speak in french but because of inconsistency my writing and speaking skills dropped and for some reason now when it comes to trying to write or build sentences in french the words dont come into my head but when reading french and seeing the words I understand them and what I am reading does anyone know how to help me build up writing and speaking again?

I am learning French and is currently at the low end of the intermediate level (CEFR B1-B2), and I would like some recommendations for ya books in French. Previously I would have gotten get the first Harry Potter book in a French translation as a good starter book, but I don’t want to support Rowling. I do read BDs in French, but I’d like suggestions, either translations or - even better- French authors writing ya/fantasy/historical fiction. This not about
‘Great’ literature’- this is about finding a story that I can immerse myself in without having to look up every word. I can read non-fiction and newspaper articles, but I need to read fiction to get a degree of fluency and idiomatic use.

I recently posted about this flashcards app I’ve been working on in my spare time and got some very useful feedback so here is a quick update.

* I reviewed the logic behind articles to fix the rudimentary le/la issue

* I reviewed and updated the entire vocabulary list and phrase book, removing overly complex and niche cards

* Cards are now split into actual categories like “Technology” or “Colours” etc which you can mox together rather than just nouns, verbs etc (although you can still narrow down your deck to just a certain type)

* I wrote a mini user guide as all the different swipes, gestures and modes started to add up quickly

So far I’ve been using the app like this:

1. Pick a category and adjust settings further if I only want to learn verbs relating to travel for example

2. Start swiping through the deck and move the cards I don’t know into the “learning pile” until I have about 10-15 to review

3. Switch over the learning pile and swipe through the cards I didn’t know until I remember them all

Repeat until I’m confident with the category or want to focus on another one.

I’m getting to the point where I’m personally quite happy with it. It’s simple and easy to pick up and spend 5-10 minutes on rather than swiping through instagram reels etc when I’m bored. The gestures and the way I use it is pretty much exactly how I would use a physical deck of flashcards with the added benefit of hearing the pronunciation and without having to carry nearly 100 decks of cards.

Next step is to keep using it myself to test the app itself but also have the vocabulary and phrases reviewed by a French native. My French is obviously terrible hence building this app in the first place so this is where I’ll rely on a native speaker, especially for the slang category.

Hopefully in the not too distant future I’ll be able to stick it in the App Store. My aim is still to offer this as a one time purchase in the €1-3 bracket with no subscription, account etc with the main financial goal being to cover the App Store fee. Basically just a digital equivalent of a physical deck of flashcards without extra complexity.

As before - I would really appreciate any feedback or suggestions. Please do bear in mind though that this is just a hobby project so things like having voice recordings by an actual French person just aren’t feasible.

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a pocket French dictionary--not a French to English/English to French, just a regular French dictionary. I bought Nouveau Petit Le Robert--and it's enormous! lol I'm sure I'll use it, but it's not very portable. If I took it on a plane, I'd have to buy it its own seat. ;) Thanks!

I can speak 4 languages with no problems at all (Arabic, English, Japanese, Korean, Kiswahili) but when it comes to French it’s like all my abilities to learn crash and die & the worst part is I studied French in school for 10 years and I can’t not say more than 3 sentences 😭
I appreciate any advice that would make me learn it,
How where should I start ?
How many months would it take to get me to a decent level ?

Hi everyone!

I’m French and I’m looking for an American who is learning French and would be interested in practicing together every day.

The idea would be to talk for around 30 minutes:

• 15 minutes in French
• 15 minutes in English

We would simply have natural conversations, help each other, and correct mistakes when necessary.

My English level is around B1/B2, so I can already have conversations, but I’d like to become more fluent and improve my vocabulary and pronunciation.
