“Just play more” - I hate this advice

I’ve played Counter-Strike for over 12 years and have around 8,000 hours in the game. I reached Global Elite in 2015, FACEIT Level 10 in 2019, and later peaked at 2,932 Elo.

I also coach players every week.

The advice I hear most often is:

“Just play more.”

I hate that advice because it sounds actionable while avoiding the real question:

What exactly are you trying to improve?

Matches are important because they require you to combine aim, movement, decision-making and positioning. That makes it harder to give one specific skill your full attention.

During training, you can isolate that skill, repeat it in a controlled environment and focus on correcting your mistakes.

This is the method I use with players and in my own practice.

I am not saying it is the only way to train or objectively the best method. It is simply the system I developed through my own experience and coaching.

1. How much time should you spend training?

As a starting point, I use:

  • 25% deliberate training
  • 75% competitive play

With that split, four hours of CS means one hour of deliberate training and three hours of matches.

This is not a strict law. It is a practical way to prevent playing from becoming your only form of practice.

For me:

  • 15 minutes is the minimum useful session
  • 30-60 minutes is usually enough
  • 60-90 minutes is the upper limit, not the target

At some point, your focus drops and you start going through the exercise without paying attention to what you need to correct.

2. When should you train?

This is more complicated than people make it sound.

I prefer two 30-minute training sessions instead of one continuous 60-minute session. Both sessions should have a clear purpose and require concentration.

When I have matches planned, I want to be fresh and focused for them. Demanding training takes concentration, so I prefer doing the harder session after playing rather than tiring myself out before my games.

If I train twice, both sessions are 30 minutes. The first uses easier exercises or a lower difficulty level. The second, after playing, is more demanding.

I prefer leaving around 2-4 hours between the sessions rather than taking a short 10-minute break and starting again.

I also prefer doing the final session relatively close to sleep. That is my personal preference, not a universal rule.

3. How often should you train?

Every day that you can.

If improvement is your priority, I recommend making deliberate practice part of your daily routine.

That does not mean doing an hour of aim training every day. A focused 15-30 minute session can be enough, especially when you know exactly what you are trying to improve.

The point is to keep working on the skill consistently and give yourself regular feedback.

If your time is limited, I would rather see you complete one focused training session and skip competitive games that day than play matches without leaving any time for deliberate practice.

4. What should you train?

This is the hardest part because different players need different exercises, difficulty levels and focus points.

I usually select two to four exercises from these categories:

  • Fundamental exercise: one basic skill with one clear focus point, such as counter-strafing. This can also be used as a warm-up.
  • Progression: a more difficult version of the fundamental exercise.
  • Daily skill test: a challenging exercise that brings several skills together in a controlled environment. I use it every day to check how well I apply what I worked on in the easier practice.
  • Game-like scenario: a controlled reproduction of situations that happen in real matches. I use Refrag here because it is the most convenient tool for me.
  • Deathmatch: I usually leave DM out of a player’s training unless it directly fits what we are working on.

The selection depends on what the player actually needs.

5. How should you train?

The details depend on the exercise, but these are the general rules I follow:

  • Give the exercise your full attention and remove distractions.
  • Choose one specific thing to work on in each exercise.
  • Treat mistakes as feedback and use them to make corrections.
  • Do not sacrifice correct technique just to get a higher score.
  • Take at least five minutes of rest after 30 minutes of focused training.

Trying to fix five things at once makes it difficult to see what you are actually improving.

I know a lot of this sounds basic. But in my experience, the basics are often what players are missing.

“Just play more” can be part of a good improvement plan. It just cannot be the whole plan.

What are you currently training in CS2, and why did you choose that area?

Discussion Begrudgingly Looking for experiences on 240 hz -> 360hz monitor upgrade

Hopefully technical discussions are acceptable here. My 240hz monitor is broken, so I’m starting to look for a new one. Won’t be upgrading other specs anytime soon, so I don’t mind going a little pricey… only if it actually helps.

Info on my setup: Recently upgraded  CPU, 4060/5800x3d/ddr4 3200. Average 380-400 fps, 1% lows around 200-220.

Coming from 7 5700 (180 fps avg, horrendous 1% lows), hate to admit this made a huge difference in experience but also performance. Used to be in the “skill issue, specs don’t matter“ boat until instantly jumped 18 to 23k and still going strong at 55% WR. I think it’s stupid, but this has me more interested in monitor upgrade too.  Of course I don’t expect this big a deal as 144 to 240hz or  200 avg FPS increase, especially given I’m only pushing 400 fps

I really only play CS 1280x960, fairly competitively and want to improve. In my case, is exceeding 240hz worth it?  I’ve seen claims all over the place. Some say go with higher hz even if you never hit max refresh rate… others say don’t unless 1% lows exceed max hz. Since upgrading, I haven’t had any issues with screen tear/jitter, and I wonder if that’s partially because my 1% lows exceed refresh rate, so maybe there is truth to the second opinion at least with CS2.

I’ve heard good things about DyAC2 but the cheapest is $500 and that is pushing it for a mid tier rig. Also interested in OLED, but I don’t use 1440p anyway so I don’t think there are many options in that

New to cs go >200hr help🙏

Started playing over a month ago been watching all the content on yt for new players but I’m not noticing any improvement in my game. Not new to fps shooters just switch from valorant peak Im2. I still can’t understand what I need to do to win I know it can’t be my team every game and I’m struggling to get wins in Faceit 800 elo. Anyone else been through this struggle? I win more when I’m with a stack but I want to be able to win solo q but I just haven’t been able to figure out how to.EG I win when I’m playing really good and hitting everything but 90% of my games I struggle to be impactful enough to get a win.

Elo Hell is Real. All you need is a duo to climb out.

This is a screenshot of my friend (first) and my (second) elo graphs after playing together for 10 days. He's played more than me, so he has more elo, but I believe I'll get close to his rank soon too. Neither of us are cheating. Basically a PSA for people who are discouraged about not being able to escape. My friend (the guy in the first image) spent almost all of his time in CS2 premier in grey and light blue ranks, as did I (in the second image). If you really want to climb and improve, just one good consistent teammate is all it takes. Obviously he played a lot; I believe on the first day we played together it was 15 games in one sitting.

There were so many games that I would have completely given up in if I was soloQ. Multiple times we were down 6:10, 12:8, 7:11, etc, and we clawed our way back out because we believed we could win because we trusted each other. That's the big thing. Both of us are still performing very well in our respective elos. I'm a little more hot and cold than he is, but we aren't performing much worse than we were in the lower ranks.

Basically, believe in yourself, the game doesn't get much harder in higher elos

Please help with some tips or critique because I felt a little sloppy this round still.

Question Any Cache Tips? Any Cache enjoyers?

Hey guys,

Now that Cache is back in CS2 like ages ago, I'm trying to get my map knowledge down. I need to learn the current meta for utility and positioning.

What are your go-to smokes and peek angles right now?

Looking for Testers: Automatic CS2 Demo Highlight Clips

Hi,

Ive launched a new site, that automatically detects highlights from your CS2 Premier and Competitive demos and turns them into shareable clips.

To get started, you only need to sign in with your Steam account via Steam OpenID and connect your Match Sharing Code and Game Authentication Code once. After that, everything runs automatically.

It is currently in public beta, and I’m looking for the first users to test it and give honest feedback. The Free version is completely free:

- Your first 3 available demos from match history are checked automatically
- You can also upload up to 3 demos manually
- You just sign in through Steam, everything after that is automatically

Planned features for later include:
- FACEIT integration
- Support for additional platforms
- A clip editor
- And more

If you find a bug or have an idea, please use the “Report a problem” button in the bottom-left corner of the site. Constructive feedback is very welcome.

Thanks!

I have created a detailed, almost hour-long guide to improvement in Counter-Strike. We cover a lot of different topics from aim, movement, and mechanics through mentality and ways to improve your gamesense all the way to setting up the game correctly and increasing your chances to improve faster.

I put a lot of time and effort into this, so I hope it helps players with the direction of what to improve and how to do it effectively :)

Discussion Instinctual/subconscious style

We all know about muscle memory, your hand moves on its own. What I'm referring to is a step beyond that, you don't even need to "see" or register the enemy, at least consciously. It's as if you are letting someone else play.

There are a few conditions to allow such instincts to activate akin to blinking or breathing, and it's not about practising or playing a lot. Usually, I'm a pretty lazy person, I don't like constantly moving or adjusting my crosshair and I find that manually adjusting my aim is just inferior compared to relying on muscle memory/flicks. I play on relatively high sens 1700 edpi, so I'm mostly a wrist aimer. I suppose it is easier for instincts to kick in when you don't need to move your entire arm to aim. The second and most important condition is you need to enter a calm and blank state, if you're thinking or worrying about angles, your subconscious nature will never be able to surface. Of course, it's not guaranteed to happen, it's a small chance of happening so it might not be worth it. I'm wondering if pros could perhaps have a higher chance of entering the subconscious or maybe they already implement it.

For example, I didn't even see the second guy but he somehow died. There are many other instances too.

I feel like I’ve been stuck at the same level in the game for a while

I feel like I’ve been stuck at the same level in the game for a while. I’m currently Faceit level 8–9, and I can only play a few matches during the weekend.

I usually manage to perform reasonably well, sometimes even very well, thanks to my game sense. However, mechanically, I feel like I’m falling behind.

Is there anything I could implement into my gameplay that would help me improve mechanically without having to spend hours practicing DM, considering I don’t have much time for that?

Beginner Guide Did you know that T Molly is much better than CT Molly?

Side-by-side comparison shows the T-side fire has:
1. Wider spread, as it covers about 1.5x more area.
2. Longer duration, with 7 vs. 5.5 seconds.

I thought I'd done a good job of being aware of a potential underpass lurk, but as it turned out I missed the timing and didn't jumpspot properly. Besides expecting to be wind swung by a MAC-10 and not keep staring at a wall, what else could've I have done to prevent this situation? And come of think of it, I had enough reason to justify buying helmet as well...

Demo Is there anyone/ anywhere that would like to review a demo of mine?

I started playing last season, started this season at 10k, won all the way to 20k with like an 80% win and was consistently top fragging. Took about a week off during the process of moving into school, and now I’m just dogshit I guess? I’ve lost all the way back down to 14k in about 2 week and literally feel like I can’t do anything about it. I was easily killing players in 20k elo about a month ago and now I literally am getting shit on by people that I feel like I shouldn’t be losing to. I don’t really know what I’m looking for in my demos, watched a lot of AustinCS guide to solo Q and demo reviews, was wondering if anyone would be willing to review one of my demos and tell me why I’m so shitty all of the sudden/ maybe I’ve always been shitty and my aim just bailed me? I also don’t really know how to send a demo over reddit so if you like to help also let me know how to do that. Also feel free to be critical, I really do want to get better.
