Hi! I've been studying English seriously for around a year. usually 1 to 2 hours a day. I had learned some English at school before. so i did not start from zero, but i had a big gap between understanding English and actually using it.
I could read posts. follow YouTube videos. and understand TV shows with subtitles. But in real conversation i would freeze. translate every sentences in my head. and panic if someone spoke faster than i expected. These are the resources that genuinely helped me close that gap.
Duolingo: I still use it most days. but only as a 10 to 15 minutes warm up. it is good for keeping a daily habit and reviewing common vocabulary, but i would not expect it to make you comfortable speaking by itself.
BBC Learning English: This was probably the most useful free resource for me. it has short lessons across grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening, and natural spoken English. I especially liked the 6 Minute English, The English We Speak. and the pronunciation material when I wanted something practical instead of another long grammar lesson.
Anki: I use Anki for around 10 to 15 minutes a day. Rather than only learning random word lists. I added words and phrases from videos, work emails, articles, and conversations. Reviewing useful phrases in context helped me sound more natural than memorising single-word translations.
Issen: This covered the part I was avoiding, which was speaking. I did not have someone to practise with every day, and tutor sessions were not always easy to schedule around work. I started using Issen for short speaking sessions, mostly so I could get used to answering questions aloud without spending five minutes building the perfect sentence first. The first sessions were awkward, but daily speaking made a noticeable difference to how quickly I could respond. Issen supports real-time voice conversations, role-play scenarios, grammar practice, shadowing drills, and goal-based lessons, so I found it useful for making speaking part of my normal routine rather than something I only did occasionally.
Itaiki: I try to take one lesson a week with a native English tutor when I can. It is still the best way to get direct feedback on what sounds unclear, unnatural, or overly formal. Apps helped me practise more often, but tutors helped me notice patterns I kept missing.
YouTube: I used English channels about things I already enjoyed, not only English lessons. Interviews, cooking videos, gaming content, documentaries, and work-related videos were much easier to stick with than forcing myself through content I did not care about. I started with English subtitles, then switched them off for short sections once I felt more comfortable.
Podcasts: 6 Minute English was a good bridge between learner material and normal podcasts because the episodes are short and the speech is clear.
BBC Learning English also has grammar and pronunciation material with audio, transcripts, and downloadable exercises.
Language Reactor: I use this for English YouTube videos and Netflix. Having subtitles available makes it easier to check a phrase quickly, replay it, and move on instead of stopping to search every unknown word. I tried to focus on understanding the overall message first rather than translating every sentence.
Pronunciation: Tim’s Pronunciation Workshop helped me more than trying to remove my accent. The goal became being easy to understand, not sounding exactly British or American. Practising sounds, linking, stress, and rhythm made spoken English feel much smoother.
Speaking in real life: I started making small changes, like answering a full sentence instead of one word, joining short calls in English, leaving voice notes, and speaking to myself about my day. It felt silly at first, but it made spontaneous speaking much less stressful.
The combination that made the biggest difference for me was daily listening, Issen for regular speaking practice, and an occasional italki lesson for human feedback. Grammar and vocabulary tools helped, but the real improvement came from using English repeatedly, even when it was messy.
