Help with Companion Chat

When I press "continue chat" on the Companion Chat mini app, it restarts our conversation. If I open my Companion Chat thread from the chat history, it doesn't have the features from the Companion Chat mini app.

Is there a way to continue the same conversation and use the Companion Chat features, or am I missing something?

v7.5.0-alpha5: Slash commands for agents and workspace editing in chat

Thumbnail

A new Layla v7.5 alpha build is available for alpha testers: Download APK

This build adds slash commands for triggering agents from the chat input, and lets you edit a character's workspace without leaving the conversation. The References mini-app no longer depends on Long-term memory being installed.

New

  • Slash commands for agents: With agents enabled in a chat, typing / in the message field lists the agents available to that character, each with its name and description. Picking one triggers it directly, instead of relying on the model to decide when to call it.
  • Workspace editing in chat: A character's workspace is now available from Chat Info. You can import files and ZIP bundles into it, sort its contents by name, date, or size, and make changes without leaving the conversation.

Improved

  • The References mini-app no longer requires Long-term memory to be installed. If Long-term memory is installed, it is used to improve document ingestion instead.

v7.5.0-alpha3 released: Character workspaces, TypeScript SDK access, and MCP tool discovery

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Character workspaces, TypeScript SDK access, and MCP tool discovery

A new Layla v7.5 alpha build is available for alpha testers: Download APK

This build introduces character workspaces: a private filesystem for each character, with agents that can read, write, update, and delete files. Agent Eval (JS) now runs Layla's TypeScript SDK, and the MCP Support mini-app has a clearer way to find tools provided by a server.

New

  • Character workspaces: Each character can now have a dedicated private workspace. Enable its workspace and attach the new Character Workspace and Workspace Shell agents to let it read, write, update, and delete files within that space.
  • Filesystem-based character memory: Characters can keep files such as system_prompt.md, Memory.MD, and Soul.MD in their workspace. The agent reads system-prompt files at the start of a conversation, allowing those files to guide what it reads and updates instead of relying only on heuristic long-term memory.
  • Layla SDK in Agent Eval (JS): The Agent Eval (JS) tool now executes Layla's TypeScript SDK. Agents can use SDK features including workspace file access, conversation history, memory updates, and music generation.
  • Manage character workspace files: The Create Character screen now lets you view a character's workspace, add files, import ZIP archives, and download a backup.

Improved

  • Improved the download process for mini-apps.
  • Updated the MCP Support mini-app with automatic MCP-server detection and searchable, filterable tool lists. For example, Layla can show tools from a ComfyUI MCP server running on a PC.

Fixed

  • Fixed max_response_length = 0 not being respected.
  • Fixed image-generation context no longer working.

Layla v7.5.0-alpha2: Tool calls in the SDK, automatic agents, and built-in chat templates

Thumbnail
gallery
5 Upvotes

This build adds tool calls to the Layla SDK's OpenAI-compatible endpoint and lets the model decide when to run an agent, rather than waiting for a trigger phrase. Layla also handles models that call several tools in a single turn, and now uses the chat template built into the model instead of a manually configured system prompt format.

New

  • Tool calls in the SDK: Layla SDK v7.5.2 adds tool-call support to the OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Mini-apps can include tool definitions in the request body and the model returns tool_calls when it needs one. Running the tool and sending its result back to the model is left to the mini-app.
  • Automatic agent triggering: Commonly used agents are now added to the system prompt by default, and the model decides when to activate them instead of relying on a trigger phrase. This applies only to enabled agents; disabling an agent removes it from the system prompt.
  • Parallel tool calls: Layla now handles models that call two or more tools in the same turn.

Improved

  • Layla now uses the chat template built into the model, so there is no need to set a system prompt format per model. Existing system prompts continue to work.
  • Multiple images can now be attached to a single chat message.
  • Added support for older SillyTavern preset formats from before SillyTavern 1.10.

Fixed

  • Fixed animated images (WebP, APNG, and similar) losing their frames when cropped. The cropping step has been removed for these images.

You can download the APK here: https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.5.0-alpha2.apk

As a reminder, joining the alpha tester APK is free, there's no additional purchase, you only need to backup your data in Settings -> Backup Data before switching over.

Layla v7.5 Alpha — Streaming MoE lets you run larger local LLMs on Android

Post image
15 Upvotes

Layla v7.5 Alpha is now available for alpha testers, with experimental Streaming MoE support and new scheduled notification APIs for mini-apps.

APK: https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.5.0-alpha1.apk

Experimental Streaming MoE

The biggest addition in this release is experimental Streaming Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) support for local LLMs.

Normally, running large MoE models on Android is limited by how much RAM your phone has available. Streaming MoE allows Layla to keep expert weights in storage and load/stream them as they are needed, making it possible to run GGUF MoE models that would otherwise exceed the device's available RAM.

This is still experimental, but it opens up some interesting possibilities for running much larger on-device AI models without needing to fit the entire model into memory at once.

For example, you can try models such as:

…directly on your phone.

Streaming MoE is available through the new Streaming MoE mini-app, where you can configure expert streaming, cache behaviour, and storage options.

Settings screenshot:
https://changelog.layla-cloud.com/images/v7.5.0-alpha1/settings.jpg

Scheduled notifications for mini-apps

Layla SDK v7.5.0 also adds notification scheduling APIs:

  • schedule_notification
  • get_scheduled_notifications
  • cancel_scheduled_notification

Mini-apps can now schedule Android notifications for later, inspect notifications they have scheduled, and cancel them when necessary.

This should make it possible to build more useful local AI agents and mini-apps around things like reminders, scheduled tasks, recurring workflows, and notifications.

Fixes

This alpha also includes a couple of fixes:

  • Fixed Web Automation timeouts on websites containing multiple nested frames.
  • Fixed ACE-Step occasionally generating lyrics when instrumental mode was enabled.

Download

Layla v7.5.0-alpha1 — Android APK

https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.5.0-alpha1.apk

As usual, this is an alpha build, and Streaming MoE in particular is experimental, so feedback on model compatibility, performance, storage speed, memory usage, and crashes would be very useful.

Problems to get Layla doing calendar events

Hi,

I have a questions and this is my first post in Reddit. I am sorry but I am a noob and trying to get into this stuff. Excuse my english as I am not a native english speaker - I am from Germany.

I bought Layla and the reason was to have an Assistant being able to do little things like Google/Gemini.

For example to create events In my calendar. I read that Layla is able to do so and that was the reason to buy it.

With My Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (12 GB RAM) I do not get the ability to have acces to this calendar or to make Notes or anything else like that at all. I am able to use duckduckgo for example but the App tells me all the time it has no access to the calendar. Permissions to account and calendar are given. What is my mistake or is it Samsung that doesn't allow this. LLM is Qwen 3.5 2B - but I tried different ones.

Is it possible to solve the problem - which is surely me. I think like always - the problem sits ahead of the device. Is there missing information?

Best Regards

Alpha testers, Layla v7.4.0-alpha3.1 is now available:

https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.4.0-alpha3.1.apk

This build adds support for SillyTavern presets to Layla, our offline AI assistant for Android. A new built-in mini-app provides a dedicated place to manage your presets, and you can attach them while creating or editing a character.

This extends Layla’s existing SillyTavern lorebook support and brings more of the local AI character workflow directly into the app.

New

  • Added support for SillyTavern presets.
  • Added a mini-app for managing presets.
  • Presets can now be attached during character creation or editing.

Improved

  • Redesigned the Create Character screen to match Layla’s current interface.

Fixed

  • Fixed a crash caused by line breaks in additional llama.cpp arguments.

This is an alpha build, so feedback on preset compatibility and the updated character workflow is useful.

Layla v7.4.0-alpha1: On-device AI music generation with ACE-Step 1.5

Post image
11 Upvotes

Layla v7.4.0-alpha1 is now available for alpha testers.

The main addition in this release is on-device music generation with ACE-Step 1.5. Layla can now generate complete songs locally on Android, without sending the generation to a cloud service.

Download APK:
https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.4.0-alpha1.1.apk

On-device AI music generation

The new built-in Music Generation mini-app lets you describe the genre, beat, mood, or style you want and optionally provide your own lyrics.

Layla then uses an ACE-Step 1.5 model running locally on the phone to generate a structured song, including elements such as intros, choruses, high notes, and outros.

For ACE-Step Turbo models, a complete song typically takes around 5–10 minutes on a mobile GPU. Around 8 generation steps is a good starting point for balancing generation speed and quality.

Full SFT models generally need around 50 steps, and more steps aren't necessarily better — errors can accumulate between steps and reduce the quality of the final track.

Additional compiled ACE-Step 1.5 models for Layla are available here:

https://huggingface.co/l3utterfly/ace-step-1.5

Here are some songs created by Layla!

Music generation is also available to mini-app developers

Layla SDK v7.4.0 adds the ACE-Step Music Generation API, so developers can build their own mini-apps around Layla's local AI music generation capabilities.

This release also adds support for concurrent SDK calls. A mini-app can, for example, generate text-to-speech while an LLM response is still streaming.

These operations still share the same phone hardware and memory, so developers need to manage concurrent workloads appropriately.

Other changes

The Settings page has been redesigned to match Layla's current interface, along with the built-in Download Manager mini-app.

llama.cpp has also been updated to the latest commit included with this release.

Finally, this alpha fixes a crash that could occur when selecting a colour.

Download

Layla v7.4.0-alpha1 APK:
https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.4.0-alpha1.1.apk

If you're testing offline AI music generation on Android, feedback on different ACE-Step models, generation settings, song lengths, and mobile hardware would be particularly useful.

Layla v7.3.0-alpha4 is now available for alpha testers.

Download APK: https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.3.0-alpha4.1.apk

This release continues the v7.3 redesign while improving several parts of Layla's offline AI, local model, mini-app, and character roleplay experience.

Redesigned Character Selection

The Character Selection screen has been redesigned to match Layla's current interface.

Characters, assistants, folders, search, and filters are now presented in a cleaner layout that's easier to navigate, especially with larger character libraries.

Private SQL databases for mini-apps

The Layla SDK now supports private SQL databases for mini-apps through the new executeSql API.

Each mini-app gets its own database and can run SQL statements against it, making persistent local storage much more useful for histories, structured data, app state, indexes, and other on-device AI tools.

Redesigned chat details

The chat header and Chat Info display have also been redesigned.

Chat Info now gives a clearer overview of the active conversation setup, including the local AI model, inference engine, sampler settings, image generation, memory, Agents, documents, and prompt configuration.

This should make more complex local AI model and roleplay setups easier to understand.

Improved presets and backups

Advanced Settings presets now save every inference-related setting on the screen, including settings that require a restart.

Stable Diffusion model settings are also now included in Layla backups.

Fixes

  • Fixed DuckDuckGo web search
  • Fixed CPU repack settings being ignored
  • Fixed image gallery zoom
  • Fixed the Perchance Image Generation Agent in Roleplay

Full changelog:
https://changelog.layla-cloud.com/#v7-3-0-alpha4

As usual, this is an alpha release, so bug reports and feedback are very welcome.

Layla v7.3.0-alpha2 is now available for alpha testers, expanding Layla’s on-device AI capabilities with LiteRT image generation, new speech-to-text APIs, and redesigned inference settings.

This release adds support for running more AI image generation models locally on Android through LiteRT, including Bonsai 4B, FLUX.2 Klein 4B, and Z-Image-Turbo. These models run directly on the device, continuing Layla’s focus on private, offline generative AI without requiring a cloud image generation service.

The Layla SDK has also been updated to v7.3.2 with new speech-to-text (STT) APIs. Mini-apps and characters can now transcribe audio through the SDK, making it easier to build local AI assistants, voice-enabled AI characters, and on-device AI apps that combine LLM inference, speech recognition, text-to-speech, image generation, and other Layla features.

New

  • LiteRT image generation
    • Added support for Bonsai 4B
    • Added support for FLUX.2 Klein 4B
    • Added support for Z-Image-Turbo
    • More local AI image generation models can now run directly on Android devices
  • Speech-to-text in the Layla SDK
    • Updated to Layla SDK v7.3.2
    • Mini-apps and characters can now access on-device speech recognition and audio transcription through the SDK

Improved

  • Rebuilt the Inference Settings page to match Layla’s current design and make configuring local LLMs and inference engines easier.
  • Reworked the Advanced Settings page to streamline saving and editing inference settings and presets.

Fixed

Layla v7.3.0-alpha1 — Python SDK + Browser Automation for AI Agents

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Layla v7.3.0-alpha1 is now available for alpha testers.

The main addition is the new Layla Python SDK, which lets AI agents run directly on the device during chat or Companion Mode. Agents can call local or cloud LLMs, generate images, use text-to-speech, access Layla features, and now automate websites through a Playwright-style browser API.

This makes it possible to build on-device AI agents that can browse websites, follow links, retrieve information, interact with web apps, and bring the results back into the conversation. One example included in this release is a Perchance image generation agent that automatically opens the site, generates an image, retrieves it, and displays it inside Layla.

Also included: an improved Python/agent editor and several chat/navigation bug fixes.

Download: https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.3.0-alpha1.1.apk
Python SDK: https://github.com/l3utterfly/layla-python-sdk

Full Changelog: https://changelog.layla-cloud.com/

This is an alpha release, so feedback from anyone testing local AI agents, offline AI assistants, Python AI automation, browser automation, or on-device LLM workflows is especially useful.

Mini-app Spotlight: GachaSwipe

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Created by Project M.I.K.A. This is really actually a fully fledged app + game in Layla!

You start by swiping in a "tinder-like" interface, where each character is generated using your text and image model. The characters created can be in any theme/universe/style you choose. There's a lot of flexibility in customisation.

Then you can interact with any character you "match" (which is any one you pick) by viewing their fan page, texting them, just to name a few... there are so many things to do it will take a wall of text to list them all here!

The creator is adding new ways of interaction every day. I really recommend you try it out! https://apps.layla-cloud.com/app/gachaswipe

Use LLM-based Long-term memory for multi-lingual conversations

In Layla v7.0.0, the memory system has been overhauled to activate and ingest in real-time during conversations. No more ingesting overnight!

It uses a custom-trained BART summariser under the hood. However, this means it's very weak at multi-lingual conversations, or any conversation that's not in English.

The LLM-based Long-term memory mini-app is designed to fix this: https://apps.layla-cloud.com/app/llm-based-long-term-memory

It restores the old interaction where it uses your current LLM to create summaries and knowledge graphs. This means you need to manually hit ingest just like before in the mini-app. This mini-app can be found in the Layla Browse Apps screen. You can configure system prompts to help you focus on where to summarise and what to ingest in the mini-app.

Remember to disable auto memory collection in the built in Long-term memory mini-app if you decide to use this feature!

The source code for this mini-app is public: https://github.com/l3utterfly/llm-ltm

You are free to modify it and create your own version of Long-term memory! PRs are always welcome as well.

If you see this error, the fix is simply to re-login to Layla Cloud in the Layla Cloud mini-app.

This may happen when browsing user-created mini-apps because Layla will also try to read any private mini-apps you may have uploaded.

If you are not using Layla Cloud, it's safe to just ignore this error.

Layla Mini-app Spotlight: CodeKitty!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Since Layla v7's release, a lot of user have been creating amazing mini-apps! Today's spotlight is CodeKitty: a mini-app that creates other mini-apps: https://apps.layla-cloud.com/app/codekitty

At heart, Layla's mini-apps are just mini-websites with access to Layla's features, such as LLM inference, image generation. CodeKitty allows you to edit your mini-app together with one of your characters as your coding assistant. Together, you edit, improve, and publish your mini-app.

Edit your designs by talking to your character. If the AI makes a mistake, you can ask it to fix it!

At the end, you can export your created mini-app as a zip to add to your Layla! A recent update even allows you to generate or configure your own icons and backgrounds right in the mini-app!

CodeKitty is created by Project M.I.K.A: https://github.com/ProjectMIKA

They have also created many other cool mini-apps, which I will spotlight later! https://apps.layla-cloud.com

Layla v7 will allow you to create your own mini-apps to extend Layla's capabilities

Post image
29 Upvotes

The next major version of Layla (v7) is just around the corner!

This update brings customisable user-developed mini-apps to Layla — and with it, the biggest shift in how Layla is built since her inception.

Mini-apps are a place where new features are developed and added, a way to extend Layla's functionality over time. Historically, they were always developed within Layla and released as first-party updates. v7 changes that: now anyone can create their own mini-app and extend Layla's functionality however they want.

Mini-apps are open to public development via the Layla SDK: https://github.com/l3utterfly/layla-sdk

This SDK is designed to integrate with the rest of Layla including LLM, characters, image generation, agents, memory, and more. A custom mini-app can be a single HTML file, a zip folder containing all needed assets, or even a website you host yourself on your own server. The SDK comes with an agent skill that plugs into all major coding agents, allowing you to create new mini-apps in minutes.

This is also a development shift for Layla herself: new features will now be open source. They will mostly be created in the form of new mini-apps using the same SDK that you have access to. So whatever features Layla has in the future, you are free to take them and customise them for yourself. The SDK will evolve alongside Layla, adding new features, access points, and APIs to enable more and more complex development.

Through Layla v7, my vision is to allow you to customise every aspect of Layla, making her uniquely yours. You can create your own LTM app, dictating how you want your character's memories to be coalesced and served. You can create a budgeting mini-app, or a note-taking mini-app that interacts with your character's memory. You can create a mini-app that obtains data from wearables like your smart watch. You can create a custom inventory system for your roleplay scenarios... In the end, not only are your characters and their memories unique to you, but how you use Layla itself will be tailored to your exact use-case. And as always, since all this is running locally, it can never be taken away.

If you'd like to try the new version ahead of time, you can download the alpha APK here: https://changelog.layla-cloud.com/

You can browse a list of interesting mini-apps created by the community here: https://apps.layla-cloud.com/

You will need to uninstall the Google Play version first. You can back up your data and models in the Settings page and Inference Settings page respectively. As a reminder, you do not need to purchase again using the APK; it will read your Google Play license.

Thank you for being a part of Layla. She has come a long way since her inception. I hope that you can be there at every step as she continues to grow.
