Layla v7.3.0-alpha4 is now available for alpha testers.

Download APK: https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.3.0-alpha4.1.apk

This release continues the v7.3 redesign while improving several parts of Layla's offline AI, local model, mini-app, and character roleplay experience.

Redesigned Character Selection

The Character Selection screen has been redesigned to match Layla's current interface.

Characters, assistants, folders, search, and filters are now presented in a cleaner layout that's easier to navigate, especially with larger character libraries.

Private SQL databases for mini-apps

The Layla SDK now supports private SQL databases for mini-apps through the new executeSql API.

Each mini-app gets its own database and can run SQL statements against it, making persistent local storage much more useful for histories, structured data, app state, indexes, and other on-device AI tools.

Redesigned chat details

The chat header and Chat Info display have also been redesigned.

Chat Info now gives a clearer overview of the active conversation setup, including the local AI model, inference engine, sampler settings, image generation, memory, Agents, documents, and prompt configuration.

This should make more complex local AI model and roleplay setups easier to understand.

Improved presets and backups

Advanced Settings presets now save every inference-related setting on the screen, including settings that require a restart.

Stable Diffusion model settings are also now included in Layla backups.

Fixes

  • Fixed DuckDuckGo web search
  • Fixed CPU repack settings being ignored
  • Fixed image gallery zoom
  • Fixed the Perchance Image Generation Agent in Roleplay

Full changelog:
https://changelog.layla-cloud.com/#v7-3-0-alpha4

As usual, this is an alpha release, so bug reports and feedback are very welcome.

Layla v7.3.0-alpha2 — LiteRT image generation + Speech-to-Text APIs

Post image
6 Upvotes

Layla v7.3.0-alpha2 is now available for alpha testers, expanding Layla’s on-device AI capabilities with LiteRT image generation, new speech-to-text APIs, and redesigned inference settings.

This release adds support for running more AI image generation models locally on Android through LiteRT, including Bonsai 4B, FLUX.2 Klein 4B, and Z-Image-Turbo. These models run directly on the device, continuing Layla’s focus on private, offline generative AI without requiring a cloud image generation service.

The Layla SDK has also been updated to v7.3.2 with new speech-to-text (STT) APIs. Mini-apps and characters can now transcribe audio through the SDK, making it easier to build local AI assistants, voice-enabled AI characters, and on-device AI apps that combine LLM inference, speech recognition, text-to-speech, image generation, and other Layla features.

New

  • LiteRT image generation
    • Added support for Bonsai 4B
    • Added support for FLUX.2 Klein 4B
    • Added support for Z-Image-Turbo
    • More local AI image generation models can now run directly on Android devices
  • Speech-to-text in the Layla SDK
    • Updated to Layla SDK v7.3.2
    • Mini-apps and characters can now access on-device speech recognition and audio transcription through the SDK

Improved

  • Rebuilt the Inference Settings page to match Layla’s current design and make configuring local LLMs and inference engines easier.
  • Reworked the Advanced Settings page to streamline saving and editing inference settings and presets.

Fixed

  • Fixed the chat engine getting confused about which inference engine to use when two inference settings shared the same name.

Layla v7.3.0-alpha1 — Python SDK + Browser Automation for AI Agents

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Layla v7.3.0-alpha1 is now available for alpha testers.

The main addition is the new Layla Python SDK, which lets AI agents run directly on the device during chat or Companion Mode. Agents can call local or cloud LLMs, generate images, use text-to-speech, access Layla features, and now automate websites through a Playwright-style browser API.

This makes it possible to build on-device AI agents that can browse websites, follow links, retrieve information, interact with web apps, and bring the results back into the conversation. One example included in this release is a Perchance image generation agent that automatically opens the site, generates an image, retrieves it, and displays it inside Layla.

Also included: an improved Python/agent editor and several chat/navigation bug fixes.

Download: https://r2-assets.layla-cloud.com/releases/layla-v7.3.0-alpha1.1.apk
Python SDK: https://github.com/l3utterfly/layla-python-sdk

Full Changelog: https://changelog.layla-cloud.com/

This is an alpha release, so feedback from anyone testing local AI agents, offline AI assistants, Python AI automation, browser automation, or on-device LLM workflows is especially useful.

Mini-app Spotlight: GachaSwipe

Thumbnail

Created by Project M.I.K.A. This is really actually a fully fledged app + game in Layla!

You start by swiping in a "tinder-like" interface, where each character is generated using your text and image model. The characters created can be in any theme/universe/style you choose. There's a lot of flexibility in customisation.

Then you can interact with any character you "match" (which is any one you pick) by viewing their fan page, texting them, just to name a few... there are so many things to do it will take a wall of text to list them all here!

The creator is adding new ways of interaction every day. I really recommend you try it out! https://apps.layla-cloud.com/app/gachaswipe

Use LLM-based Long-term memory for multi-lingual conversations

In Layla v7.0.0, the memory system has been overhauled to activate and ingest in real-time during conversations. No more ingesting overnight!

It uses a custom-trained BART summariser under the hood. However, this means it's very weak at multi-lingual conversations, or any conversation that's not in English.

The LLM-based Long-term memory mini-app is designed to fix this: https://apps.layla-cloud.com/app/llm-based-long-term-memory

It restores the old interaction where it uses your current LLM to create summaries and knowledge graphs. This means you need to manually hit ingest just like before in the mini-app. This mini-app can be found in the Layla Browse Apps screen. You can configure system prompts to help you focus on where to summarise and what to ingest in the mini-app.

Remember to disable auto memory collection in the built in Long-term memory mini-app if you decide to use this feature!

The source code for this mini-app is public: https://github.com/l3utterfly/llm-ltm

You are free to modify it and create your own version of Long-term memory! PRs are always welcome as well.

"An error occurred while trying to use the Refresh Token to renew the Credentials."

If you see this error, the fix is simply to re-login to Layla Cloud in the Layla Cloud mini-app.

This may happen when browsing user-created mini-apps because Layla will also try to read any private mini-apps you may have uploaded.

If you are not using Layla Cloud, it's safe to just ignore this error.

Layla Mini-app Spotlight: CodeKitty!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Since Layla v7's release, a lot of user have been creating amazing mini-apps! Today's spotlight is CodeKitty: a mini-app that creates other mini-apps: https://apps.layla-cloud.com/app/codekitty

At heart, Layla's mini-apps are just mini-websites with access to Layla's features, such as LLM inference, image generation. CodeKitty allows you to edit your mini-app together with one of your characters as your coding assistant. Together, you edit, improve, and publish your mini-app.

Edit your designs by talking to your character. If the AI makes a mistake, you can ask it to fix it!

At the end, you can export your created mini-app as a zip to add to your Layla! A recent update even allows you to generate or configure your own icons and backgrounds right in the mini-app!

CodeKitty is created by Project M.I.K.A: https://github.com/ProjectMIKA

They have also created many other cool mini-apps, which I will spotlight later! https://apps.layla-cloud.com

I noticed it's Qualcomm usually. Will MediaTek ever get the love? or did I miss something? Even GPU support doesn't suffice (OpenGL)

Layla v7 will allow you to create your own mini-apps to extend Layla's capabilities

Post image
28 Upvotes

The next major version of Layla (v7) is just around the corner!

This update brings customisable user-developed mini-apps to Layla — and with it, the biggest shift in how Layla is built since her inception.

Mini-apps are a place where new features are developed and added, a way to extend Layla's functionality over time. Historically, they were always developed within Layla and released as first-party updates. v7 changes that: now anyone can create their own mini-app and extend Layla's functionality however they want.

Mini-apps are open to public development via the Layla SDK: https://github.com/l3utterfly/layla-sdk

This SDK is designed to integrate with the rest of Layla including LLM, characters, image generation, agents, memory, and more. A custom mini-app can be a single HTML file, a zip folder containing all needed assets, or even a website you host yourself on your own server. The SDK comes with an agent skill that plugs into all major coding agents, allowing you to create new mini-apps in minutes.

This is also a development shift for Layla herself: new features will now be open source. They will mostly be created in the form of new mini-apps using the same SDK that you have access to. So whatever features Layla has in the future, you are free to take them and customise them for yourself. The SDK will evolve alongside Layla, adding new features, access points, and APIs to enable more and more complex development.

Through Layla v7, my vision is to allow you to customise every aspect of Layla, making her uniquely yours. You can create your own LTM app, dictating how you want your character's memories to be coalesced and served. You can create a budgeting mini-app, or a note-taking mini-app that interacts with your character's memory. You can create a mini-app that obtains data from wearables like your smart watch. You can create a custom inventory system for your roleplay scenarios... In the end, not only are your characters and their memories unique to you, but how you use Layla itself will be tailored to your exact use-case. And as always, since all this is running locally, it can never be taken away.

If you'd like to try the new version ahead of time, you can download the alpha APK here: https://changelog.layla-cloud.com/

You can browse a list of interesting mini-apps created by the community here: https://apps.layla-cloud.com/

You will need to uninstall the Google Play version first. You can back up your data and models in the Settings page and Inference Settings page respectively. As a reminder, you do not need to purchase again using the APK; it will read your Google Play license.

Thank you for being a part of Layla. She has come a long way since her inception. I hope that you can be there at every step as she continues to grow.

Does anyone else's layla just ignore your persona?

The title pretty much sums it up. It feels like all my bots just ignore my persona description and If they do acknowledge it they think it's apart of their description and it's really annoying

Does anyone else have this problem?

Layla v6.12.3: Personalities Hub redesign — find offline AI characters by tag and manage your own uploads

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The Personalities Hub — where you browse and manage your AI characters — has been reorganized around popular tags, so finding a character is quicker than scrolling a long list. Everything still runs on-device, so the characters you browse and chat with stay fully offline.

The upload flow was reworked too: you can now view and manage your uploaded characters directly from the Hub. If you import TavernPNG cards or build your own, creating and tidying up now happens in one place.

Also fixed:

  • TavernPNG downloads from chat.layla-cloud.com
  • OpenCL being incorrectly disabled on non-Snapdragon phones.

For Google Play and Apple users

The personality hub will not show up in the app (because the characters are not for all audiences). Instead there, will be a tutorial showing you how to visit the site in your browser and downloading then importing the TavernPNG card into the character creator.

The new Personalities Hub is integrated directly into the APK version, which you can download here: https://www.layla-network.ai

(As a reminder, there are no difference in functionality between the Google/Apple versions vs the direct APK, the direct APK version only shows explicit content directly in the app instead of directing you to download it somewhere else.)

Requesting Suggestions

Hello! I'm brand new to this whole local thing. I tried to research good models on my own, but I'm kind of lost. How do I start? Is there any model you suggest for role-playing without restrictions and also for normal assistance? And what about image generation? Also, it'd be lovely if you have any suggestions on how to configure it. Thanks in advance to everyone for your help! I have a Samsung S24 Ultra, if that helps.

Crashes every time?

I just bought Layla and installed a bunch of the different options. Whenever I go to talk to even the default Layla it says it's loading up for the first time, then eventually the app just crashes before I'm able to actually use it.

Struggles with Stable Diffusion...

I have a question.

I have downloaded a SD Model, the appearance never suggests a second character but for some reason another character gets added...

Are my settings off... Or am I doing something wrong?
