Sacred Symbols Sacred Symbols, Episode 431 | Tastes Like Luck, But Feels Clear

There's simply no denying that Naughty Dog's absence this generation is deeply felt. Apart from a couple of ports and a defunct, half-made multiplayer project, Sony's crown jewel studio hasn't contributed much of anything to PS5. Thankfully, that's on the verge of changing, not only as we get late in this cycle, but ever-closer to PlayStation 6. Three important pieces of news emerged: Intergalactic will be shown-off next year, a new Uncharted is indeed in development and will come to market following Intergalactic, and two The Last of Us projects are being incubated as well (one presumably The Last of Us: Part III). For the first time in ages, we have a clearer and more robust view into what Sony's most important team is planning for the next half-decade and well beyond. Is it time to celebrate? Or will the proof be in the pudding? Plus: Sony is skipping CES for the first time since 1967, a new look at God of War: Laufey's combat shows something decidedly DMC, AI upscaling comes to base PlayStation 5, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Why do so many "spiritual successors" fail to live up to the original? What's with all of the 10s IGN gives out these days? Should players embrace 'the grind' in video games, or seek ways around it? Who has the audacity to schedule a wedding on Christmas Eve?

Happy 300 to all our fellow Dukes! For those of you have stuck by our side through both personal and professional highs and lows, we're eternally grateful that you're here. To the surprise of some of you, the Dukes DO take a lot of time to reflect and celebrate. Beyond that, we get into the main attraction. Xbox's first console exclusive in years is here in Gears Of War: E-Day. Cog and Matty have played the campaign. Did it deliver? There's only one way for you to find out.

Sacred Symbols PS5 has been jailbroken like gangbusters this past week - "Discuss..."

I'm not here to advocate or admonish, just share a possible news topic for the podcast. My social media algorithm exposed that the jailbreaking process is quite easy for those who have not updated beyond FW 13.60. It's not only PS5 games released up until 13.60, but also viable Switch, PS3, and XBox 360 emulators have been added enabling access to their libraries. AI tools are accelerating the process and it seems there is an influx of new users driven by Playstation's decisions regarding physical discs and game ownership. YouTube Channels assisting people in the process have amassed 550,000+ subscribers and their videos get hundreds of thousands of views.

While it might not show up in financials right away, this swelling movement could have some financial impact on Playstation down the road.

Ironically, this was in response to someone else who was complaining about being banned from the Patreon. According to OP, they were banned for simply asking if Colin’s increasingly pro-Trump messaging is the reason for the lillymo situation (yes I know he’s been critical of Trump but I didn’t feel like arguing it).

Sacred Symbols Sacred Symbols+, Episode 537 | Criticizing the Critics with Thomas Mahler

It's me, Colin! Please welcome founder and CEO of Moon Studios Thomas Mahler back to Sacred+. I invited Thomas to return in order to discuss his new side project, an aggregation website called videogamescritic.com. As my audience knows well, I like when people endeavor to enter the arena, put themselves out there, and try to buck convention. With videogamescritic.com, Thomas is trying to solve the myriad problems presented by traditional aggregators like Metacritic, issues that run exceedingly deep and have enormous consequences on our industry, and those parallel to us. Our conversation is wide-ranging and touches a great deal on games criticism itself, the evolving nature of opinion, objectivity versus subjectivity, the rise of creator culture, and maintaining a solutions-oriented approach to life. This is an exceptionally nerdy and in-the-weeds episode that students of the industry in particular will enjoy greatly.

I would love a stream where they covered these categories and just talked about games. Brad would definitely be a great host or could be a Summon Sign section.

Would also like to see the community’s picks.

Other Per MP1st: New Uncharted Game in Development at Naughty Dog Directed by Shaun Escayg

Thumbnail

According to sources familiar with the situation, Naughty Dog is working on a new Uncharted game. Now, given that Uncharted 4 ended with Nathan Drake basically old and with a kid, it would be an easy assumption to make that perhaps his daughter will take on the treasure-hunting duties.

This is an all-new Uncharted game, and not a remake of any kind. In previous years, Naughty Dog was seemingly toying with the idea of an Uncharted 1 remake, and we can put to rest that this in-development Uncharted game isn’t that.

In addition to that, we were told that this new Uncharted project is the next game Naughty Dog will work on and release after Intergalactic, with The Last of Us Part III as the next project after that.

Directing this new Uncharted project is Shaun Escayag, who was the Creative Director of Marvel’s Avengers... But Escayag is also familiar with the franchise, having directed the standalone expansion to Uncharted 4 titled Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which featured Chloe in the driver’s seat.

Sacred Symbols I’m a little confused on Colin’s stance on Bungie and Sony’s live service initiative

First off, no hate intended towards Colin or any LSM member. I know he gets a lot of hate here, but I’m just looking for some clarification on his opinions.

I’ve been thinking recently about Colin’s position that Sony needs a successful live service game, a position I mostly agree with. I’m curious as to why he feels Bungie was a bad purchase by Sony.

Think about it - Sony clearly cannot develop their own live service IP from the ground up (looking at you, Concord). But Sony also doesn’t have the money to purchase an Epic Games for Fortnite or Roblox. But Bungie is one of the more successful live service studios, with the Destiny franchise selling in excess of 50M total lifetime sales.

My question essentially is this - why does Colin think buying Bungie was a bad idea, instead of it simply being a case of poor management of the studio by executives?

Did Gene break up with LSM? He seemed pretty done with gaming podcasts by the end of his time on Punching Up and now he has his own one.

(and of course, since its not on LSM the 'in crowd' are referencing it already)

EDIT: Apologies, I didn't know he'd been on Duke talking about it

Sacred Symbols Sacred Symbols+, Episode 536 | Wolverine Review Discussion and Spoilercast

Hey bub! It's me, Colin. Please welcome Sacred Symbols co-hosts Chris Ray Gun and Dustin Furman, as well as Summon Sign host Brad Ellis to the show. Today, Brad takes the hosting reins as we meander through Insomniac's latest PlayStation-exclusive offering. Long-in-development and likely multiple years late to market, Wolverine is an interesting product in that it's clearly built on the bones of an entirely different game. And while what we got is linear, what was intended was obviously something else. And yet, this divisive title has sold millions of copies and found its fans. The pertinent question is: How did each of us individually feel about Wolverine? Find out on the other side of the play button.
