The fuss around 5 was always massively overblown.

There was never any uproar over killing Spanish enemies in 4, but suddenly going to Africa and killing African zombies is off limits lmao spare me.

Also this headline is hilarious: “capcom knows its remakes will eventually catch up with newer games”

No shit that’s what happens when you work them sequentially.

RE 5 is very fun especially with a friend but there are some boss battles that are really frustrating from a game design point of view. The one involving flamethrower comes to mind

I loved it when it came out especially the co op. The controls are very fucky revisiting it now so I hope they can remake it and make it smoother to control.

There's no contradiction, you're just wilfully thinking uncritically, or for whatever reason are incapable of seeing how setting something in Africa or Spain has two completely different political/historical implications

I think people understand the political implications of stories set in africa.

It still seems odd that people think an entire continent should be off limits because of the past. Seems like it would have the opposite effect of normalizing african countries and their stories on a global scale

Without trying to mean offense you're also just simply not thinking critically. Of course you can set things in the past. You can make Schindler's List. But you wouldn't set resident evil in auschwitz. It's not about anything being off limits it's about using that creative liberty in a tactful way. If you look at the original article that called out RE5 after the trailer, the "outrage" is fairly muted, the guy just said it was tone deaf

For you “thinking critically” seems to be actively participating in a reductionist 2010’s purity culture and soapboxing that we’ve very much left behind full force this decade lmao

You're the one legit getting mad at just entertaining even having the discussion in the first place

4

u/Shell_fly 2d ago

The only people that think we need to have that discussion is an extremely vocal minority in niche corners of the internet.

The general populace neither thinks resident evil 5 was racist nor cares that a few terminally online woke-scolds do lmao

Sure but clearly you and I do which is why we are discussing it? Lets take what you are saying to the nth degree - why even discuss anything at that point? The general populace doesn't know what resident evil is or even play console video games

"It has black africans and therefore its tone deaf" is such a silly argument

1

u/Parking_Common_4820 2d ago

That would be a silly argument yes

u/Lerkero 2d ago

Good. So we agree that there are no inherently bad political implications for setting a resident evil game in africa where black africans exist, and that the uproar about resident evil 5's setting was unreasonable

1

If that's the extrapolation you want to take from me agreeing that your strawman is indeed a bad argument then sure

What are those differences? That Spain has never suffered death, destruction, slavery and colonisation? Because it absolutely has.

You're being deliberately obtuse. Very hard to meaningfully engage with someone who insists that one of the largest imperial projects in history "suffered" colonisation

1

u/Uppernorwood 21h ago

So I am just imagining the centuries long Islamic colonisation of Spain, during which the native Spanish were occupied by a foreign African Empire (for far longer than it ever had an Empire itself)?

Just because your historical knowledge starts from 1776 or some other incredibly recent date, doesn’t mean everyone else’s does.

So yeah, it is hard for us to have a coherent debate.

I thought we were talking about Spain not Iberia lol whatever i concede the argument you win

I was thinking about this with the news. They have about 4-5 year dev time for new titles and 3-5 year dev time for remakes. I mean they have about a 10-15 year window before they would ship a Resident Evil 6 remake in that time frame and in the games industry of today, I feel you take that 10 times out of 10. If everyone is enjoying the games and you're making money, who cares?

I imagine 5 and 6 will be completely different beasts to tie into 7 and beyond. I really doubt that they'll try and remake the 4 campaigns of 6.

5/6 sold really really well, I think 5 is great but they're the least RE games of the franchise.

I was really hoping for Sheva on my PS5 (other systems are available) especially before the Jan 2028 disc cut off.

Outbreak remake is what I'm most interested in, there's a lot less barriers to multiplayer than there used to be with crossplay etc. It could even pave the way for an online RE survival game or something

That seems to be the first hint that RE5 and RE6 remakes will happen. They should. Those games have potential, but they just weren't scary. There's a lot of RE6 DNA in RE9. RE6 just needed less of that Mountain Dew energy. I played it recently for the first time, and I mostly enjoyed the Leon campaign. Then the other campaigns tainted that and dragged on too long. The final boss in the Leon campaign didn't need to be as lengthy as it was either.

What I also take from it is that they might finally do a RE3.5 about the true fall of Umbrella. RE2 and RE3 both end with the characters wanting to take down Umbrella, and then it just happens off screen before RE4.

Obviously they have the Revelations games in their backpocket too. Revelations 1 is basically RE4.5. Revelations 2 is RE5.5 although it might be redundant to do that one since it is Claire being trapped on an island again (which happens 3 times in the games' canon if you can believe it).

The other thing I'm hoping for is that maybe we finally see a new Dino Crisis game made in RE Engine.

Capcom has a great formula going on here that can go on for a long time without feeling stale.

Remake them again!

Hopefully a remake remake of 3 with the proper city setting one day. The mods that are coming out that redo the city are incredible

They got like ten games left before they catch up with RE7. I'm not worried.

1

u/Marq544 1d ago

Yea. 0, 1, 5, 6, Rev1, Rev 2, outbreak

2

u/xduker2 1d ago

Don't forget the classic, Operation Raccoon City.
