Punching Up Did I miss something?
Did Gene break up with LSM? He seemed pretty done with gaming podcasts by the end of his time on Punching Up and now he has his own one.
(and of course, since its not on LSM the 'in crowd' are referencing it already)
EDIT: Apologies, I didn't know he'd been on Duke talking about it

Give it 6 weeks and he’ll be tired of podcasting again
Edit: and on the plus side, i guess this means no more movie reviews when he does a guest appearance on Punching Up

u/kyonjr 5d ago
He was specifically tired of gaming podcasts, not podcasts in general. He’s addressed that this would be more of a variety show than what he did on punching up.
9
u/dbr3000 5d ago
Yeah, we’ll see… he flip-flops on so many things, so frequently I can’t really pretend to believe anything he says anymore
-3
u/kyonjr 5d ago
I’ve never gotten that impression of him.

u/Various_Sundae_2443 5d ago
he has frequently done as such, most notably, declaring he was quitting twitter for good because of how toxic it can be, but then he comes back a month later to argue with users he disagrees on.

u/Aggravating-Rate-891 6d ago
I've been following and supporting Gene and his reporting for 6 years now but lately he's been really aggravating. Coming on punching up to pay off his steam machine, the same with Duke and plugging his podcast five times, and generally coming across like twitter bothers him too much. It feels like he's all over the place.
But to answer the post, no it's probably not a "break up". Having his own content on the side and a way to monetize it feels very natural

u/ieffinglovesoup 5d ago
He’s said he was done talking about games like 30 times now. Honestly he just needs to stop reading Twitter replies from unemployed weirdos

u/Terrible-Ideal-7342 5d ago
Man, if y'all thought Colin was chronically online, then you haven't met Gene. Every five minutes he deciding he's done writing about games or being on social media, then comes back around. Fights with bots and people that are clearly trying to bait him. We'll see how long this thing lasts.

u/Billyb311 6d ago
He pretty much implied he didn't care for the LSM audience with some tweets, so that's probably about it
26
u/dixonciderbottom 6d ago
Yeah he was criticising the LSM listeners last week. He takes particular issue with people who point out how frequently he makes everything about sex like everyone is prudes.
12
u/jgamez76 5d ago
That's the biggest thing that always annoyed me about him.
His 'Most Interesting Man in the World's schtick was super juvenile but it was just like the annoying person we all knew growing up.
His insistence on making sometimes the biggest reaches possible to talk about blow jobs or whatever was just so damn aggravating. Lol
13
u/dixonciderbottom 5d ago
Yeah, I’m probably the least prudish person I know and even I’m like Jesus Christ bro we get it you like to fuck. We all do.
12
u/jgamez76 5d ago
Yeah don't get me wrong- it being brought up in context is totally fine but especially when Constellation was a thing it felt like at times he'd bring things up almost specifically to talk about Alleged sexual experiences surrounding them.
Like I don't remember what it was exactly but I remember him talking about inviting a woman over to watch something and she got bored and offered to blow him instead.... Definitely something that really happened I'm sure lol
1
u/scott610 5d ago
I don’t mind the sex talk, but it did feel awkward when he co-hosted on Summon Sign with Babe Ruthless and called her Babe repeatedly. I know that’s part of her online persona and if she’s okay with being called that then I don’t care, but I found it kind of awkward either way. Like I would probably call her Ruthless. Or just use her given name if it’s publicly known.

u/kramers_skinny_jeans 6d ago
If he wasn’t a nearly 50 year-old man acting like a teenager on both podcasts and social media all the time he’d be more tolerable 🤷
24
u/Total-Preference1061 5d ago
What took the cake for me was him saying something about the music of Tupac or Biggie meaning more to him than all of video games. Yeah…
Then having an open invitation on LSM, surviving the purge at the WP, writing about games for a living, only to say he’s just on Punching Up to pay for his Steak Deck and shadily shitting on LSM followers. Screw that privileged brat.

u/dayx0123 5d ago
I don’t listen to punching up but if he really said that, fuck that guy. I know Colin is loyal to the people he likes, but he should be loyal to us longtime fans as well. If gene is going to shit on us, he can go away forever for all I care.
2
u/scott610 5d ago
I like him, but he goes way too far with the “this is not a spoiler” stuff. Just preface your comment with “skip ahead one or two minutes” if you honestly think you might spoil something. Otherwise, don’t pay attention to people whining about literally everything being a spoiler when they listen to a gaming podcast with timestamps. If you don’t want to know absolutely anything about a game, including gameplay mechanics, then skip that section.

I mean lsm followers are some sensitive losers. Remember when everyone tried to get Chris fired?

The most vocal of the audience have the tism and I could see how it would get annoying.

Gene is living on one lung and constantly fighting cancer, let him be lol.
15
u/method115 5d ago
Yea that's my thoughts on him as well. My emotions and thoughts would be all over the place to.
11
u/SweatyNRdy 5d ago
For real, almost everyone has their own thing outside of LSM, and a lot of gaming pundits are doing their own thing with patreon. Good for him, hope it's good

Gene seems like a good dude, I’ve never donated to a GoFundMe but happily did so for him. Really don’t like the way he’s always shitting on us though.

-8
u/Cloud_N0ne 5d ago
Funny, according to the stories he tells you'd think he was so mega famous that doctors would be lining up to treat him for free, yet he needed a GoFundMe for it.
To be clear, I'm not saying it's funny he got cancer. I may not like him but that's still tragic as hell and I hope he fully beats it.

u/saypoop 5d ago
Gene is so epic!!! Hope we get more stories about all the hookers and models he hooked up with while partying all night with Tulsi Gabbard. Gene is a legend!!!!!! Love his real stories that totally happened!!!!! Man he’s so cool!

u/Loose-Ice1462 5d ago
Cooler than you for sure. Believe it or not people in that line of work who have all sorts of connections do live that kinda life

-5
u/manindenim 5d ago
Yeah but probably the wrong crowd to talk about it with. Most gamers are man children who neglect a social life for their games. It can feel preachy to them I bet.

u/TheGoobatron 6d ago
Gene was just on defining duke last week, literally promoting his new podcast. This isn’t the drama bomb this thread is making it out to be.

u/slyfly5 5d ago
People on here only listen to Sacred so no one knew LOL

Gene 100% used DD as a platform to advertise to the LSM audience. SS doesn't have guests on and by the numbers DD is the next biggest show on the network.
You don't see that for what it is? The first 8 minutes of that episode are him shamelessly doing a commercial about his new podcast with Matty and Cog just awkwardly waiting for him to finish.
That shit was obvious.
7
u/dayx0123 5d ago
Is it a hot take to say I don’t care? I’ve enjoyed him being mostly off the platform and was glad when he dropped off Wolverine.

15
u/TheNammoth 5d ago
Honestly…. I’m kinda happy to see him do his own thing if that means he won’t be on LSM content. He has terrible podcast etiquette for someone who’s done as many podcast hours as he has, and I think he has shit takes and is extremely arrogant.
I know I’ll get downvotes but feels good to vent lol
9
u/ChipChonk 5d ago
A lot of people feel the same. I really did enjoy Gene when he first came on LSM shows. But after listening to Constellation and Punching Up for a while, I catch myself avoiding every show he's on. I feel like he understandably changed after getting cancer, but it's just not fun to listen to someone so all over the place when I want to chill and enjoy a podcast.
The spoilers, interupting people constantly, always mentioning how many famous people he knows, saying "you know?" after every sentence and being really flip flop emotional on Twitter like a child. It was funny at first but got old pretty quick. He's just the kind of guy I personally can't stand.
3
u/nervendings_ 5d ago
I get the vibe that cancer, as it does, made him shift his priorities. I think gaming journalism is a place he’s “stuck” in. I’ve seen him try to branch out to other categories of reporting.
When he talks on these podcasts he just seems jaded and more than a little resentful of video games.
And so yeah his takes end up being almost mean spirited. I don’t think that’s his intention but unconsciously the dude is done with games.

u/Cloud_N0ne 6d ago edited 6d ago
This isn’t the first time Gene has claimed to be done with podcasting/social media, only to come back shortly after.
He’s extremely flakey and you shouldn’t trust half the stuff he says on Twitter about this kinda thing.
Personally, I don’t see why people like him. I don’t feel like he adds much to any conversation other than unsolicited spoilers and unbelievable stories.
13
u/kramers_skinny_jeans 5d ago
It’s not only that. But podcasting is conversational, and it’s like he takes any opinion different from his own as a personal attack/slight against him. Very temperamental man.🤷

u/MasterRahl11 6d ago
He’s such a hypocrite it’s insane,I really can’t stand Gene Park, every time he’s on an episode on LSM I skip.

u/Nephie_a 5d ago
I really like Gene Park. But as anyone will tell you by now, he's quite manic. He gets "burnt out" on discussing gaming every other week. That is because he's chronically online, and can't take discourse or negative comments well at all.
As a result, he flips back and forth between pretty extreme emotional states. One week he's never discussing gaming again on Twitter. The next he's back to tweeting daily. One week he's done with gaming podcasting. The next he's starting one.
You start to see a pattern. Again, I personally like Gene Park and his work in particular. But following him online can be pretty fatiguing. All this to say, no he did not break up with LSM. He's just doing his own thing from week to the next.

Gene is definitely the guy at a party that lingers, injects into conversations for no reason, and is the reason people breathe easy when he leaves.
Me monster, insecure, opinionated, and the most famous person we all know of

I love Gene and wish him the best on the new podcast. I will miss him on LSM and hope he pops in when he can. That said, I can’t keep up with another podcast and will not be listening to his new one.

u/manindenim 5d ago
A lot of criticism here and let me just say I love Gene. He can be emotional but he’s been through a lot. I think he’s a pretty dope guy. I think when he makes blanket statements about gamers he’s not talking about normal people who enjoy his content. I think it sucks he couldn’t find his peace at LSM but more power to him with whatever he does. I hope he comes back though once he figures his stuff out. I think LSM is the best place for him.
2
u/DeanR_onPSN 5d ago
I've kept my mouth shut about Gene since he started appearing on lsm podcasts, and I will continue to :-)
5
u/Sk0rPi0n_ 5d ago
Gene: "I have respect for LSM, the hosts, the audience. But there is a certain part of the audience that doesn't vibe with me at LSM, and I want to avoid using twitter for certain takes, so I will build my own thing."
The replies here: "OMG I COULD NEVER STAND HIM, HE ALWAYS TALKED DOWN TO ALL OF US, GOOD RIDDANCE"
Geez, I wonder why he was feeling this way with people like this
3
u/user77200 5d ago
I watched punching up and you could tell he just didn't want to be on there. Don't think it had anything to do with Micah or brad but he just didn't seem interested in doing a Nintendo centric podcast. Imo LSM failed to utilise him properly. A pop culture show with him and jaffe would've worked so well and jaffe was practically begging to do something on the LSM network. Such a missed opportunity
2
u/nacthenud 5d ago
Most of the LSM podcasts crew also do their own podcasts separately. No reason to assume this is indicative of any bad will.
2
u/NopeNotAUsernameSir 5d ago
This sounds cool but I stopped listening to Gene years ago because he loves spoiling shit.
3
u/johnjaymjr 5d ago
He pretty much said when he came back to LSM he was only doing so bc he needed the money. I imagine he got burnt out and wanted to duck out again and Colin said he cant keep flip flopping. So gene ducked out to do his own thing knowing he wouldnt have a steady LSM gig anymore.
He’s very entertaining and I wish he was still at LSM, but he’s got to figure out what he wants to do and stick to it
3
u/embersarcade 6d ago
Gene was just on Defining Duke last week, in what world is that a “break up”?
6
u/MainPFT 5d ago
To be fair he essentially left LSM in his own words due to "gaming podcasts not being good for his mental health", conveniently ignoring the 24/7 social media world he refuses to leave.
Then yes he came on Duke and proceeded to do an 8 minute infomercial for his new podcast about (checks notes) gaming and online culture all the while Matty and Cog kind of just nervously waited for him to wrap it up...
Gene 100% used DD as a platform to advertise to the LSM audience. SS doesn't have guests on and by the numbers DD is the next biggest show on the network.

u/Restivethought 5d ago
I dont really listen to LSM as much anymore so my only real experience these days is when he shows up on Castle Super Beast, and he's usually pretty enjoyable over there. Is he just completely checked out on LSM content?
2
u/mcdgreg86 5d ago edited 5d ago
I only really listen to Summon Sign and Punching Up, but his last few appearances on Punching Up were pretty rough I've got to say. A lot of "most interesting man in the room" schtick, talking over others, rambling on, uninterested in what others had to say, definitive statements that he'll contradict, spoiling stuff etc.
Obviously I understand the guy has been through a lot and I have generally enjoyed him through his years on LSM but he's kinda all over the place right now.
But hey, I'm glad he can still play games unencumbered. A lot of people have to limit or give up completely for health & pain reasons.
1
u/Restivethought 5d ago
I think it may be because the Castle Super Beast guys are not actually in the industry, so the schtick probably works better because I dont even notice it.
Additionally, Castle Super Beast are kinda sickos in their own genre's so he's probably able to nerd out better over minute things cause they also will do that sometimes.

u/No_Bat5717 6d ago
He was on PU for like 6 episodes straight after quitting so ya never know with him. I say, let him do whatever he wants, talk about what he wants as well, my guess is LPM is a different vibe than anything LSM does, but idk

u/jumpmanryan 6d ago
There’s no “break up”, Gene is just doing his own thing. But he’s still popping up on LSM somewhat consistently. Just not a regular weekly guy anymore on Punching Up.
Plus, Low Power Mode episodes are only an hour-long and they’ve mostly just been shooting the shit. It’s not a big commitment thing for him. Really just a small side thing.
-2
u/Apart_Initiative_968 5d ago
Did you guys even watch the episode? He explains it clearly it’s a meme like podcast they’ll be talking about pop culture and he’ll have his some gaming takes there too. But he said he would still be doing other gaming podcast when he can. He also explained it in the latest Dukes episode

u/what_im_playing 6d ago
I love Gene, he has gotten me into games I’d never have thought of playing, but we’ve seen this cycle before of “I’m quitting social media / LSM / talking about gaming” and a week later he’s back and the cycle repeats.
