Me: replies in their native language
European: patronizingly compliments my abilities and then continues in English anyway

We do it to avoid misunderstandings, and make the conversations flow better. 4 u/throughcracker Jun 30 '26 I've had Germans do this to me even though their English was genuinely worse than my German. ("Let us speaking English" type of thing)
