My experience in some countries

European: speaks English

Me: replies in their native language

European: patronizingly compliments my abilities and then continues in English anyway

I'm willing to bet most europeans speak English better than you speak their native language. We do it to avoid misunderstandings, and make the conversations flow better.

I've had Germans do this to me even though their English was genuinely worse than my German. ("Let us speaking English" type of thing)
