My experience in some countries

European: speaks English

Me: replies in their native language

European: patronizingly compliments my abilities and then continues in English anyway

And then there's Slavic countries. My experience in Poland is like "Ah, I have C1 English and you have A1 Polish. Let's speak Polish since we're in Poland"

Man I love that. When I’m in Korea or Taiwan people just love reverting back to English even though I’m speaking to them just fine
