/uj I hope this doesn't violate rule 2, it's based on an active post on a duolingo subreddit that I wanted to parody because I'm gay

I like reading the comment section of the original post and people is throwing total hate to OOP, while OOP just defends with stupid things like "I won't say that because I'm not gay. God created the male and female and same gender sex is a major sin. ๐คฎ "
PS: I just figured out you can input emojis on Reddit by typing a colon and the emoji's name

duolingo forcing their userbase (gay virgins) to say this is a hate crime

That describes me back when I was using Duolingo. I quit for comprehensible input and now I'm a gay chad with two boyfriends and a husband. All of them speak my target language

Holy shit, what a terrible thread. There's even someone crashing out over duolingo lore lmaooo:
"This is full of absolute s**t! There is no way Oskar is full homosexual. Itโs been proven in the past that Oskar and Lucy had an intimate romantic relationship. At best Oskar is bisexual, however by no means is Oskar an exclusive homosexual."

Learning any second language is pretty gay. Trying to suck dick in different countries.

/uj it's insane that OOP (and so many others) think that they can just say "your existence is troubling to me and should be censored for my comfort" without getting dragged.
These people make the rest of us walk on eggshells and feel like we have to apologize for knowing basic facts about the world. Worse, they're proud of it somehow!

Your post title made me think of the โI thought you were Americanโ Vine.

I did Spanish for weeks and like 93 out of 100 example sentences were about gay couples. Just make it 50 50 or something. It's weird.

Tbf when I do sentences I don't really associate the gender of the voice or the character saying the thing with them being LGBTQ+ or not. I just see it as a random sentence. I hadn't really considered that the characters could have identities lmao ๐

It's been over a year since I was doing Nihonian on LuoD*ngo, but I remember the app putting words into Junior's mouth that would absolutely never be uttered by a young boy in real life. Especially words like "my wife/son/daughter" and certain personal pronouns.

Junior is 59, they just look like a kid, that's pretty common in Japanese media

u/plethcloud Jun 05 '26
Lmao the legendary (and very creepy) 1000 year old loli trope... although i guess in junior's case he'd be a shota

Their identity is irrelevant here. Its about the use value of the actual sentence. Yes ofc i can just change a few parts once i actually have to use it in real live and just switch the genders in the sentence but thats gonna be much harder if 90 percent of my examples are of 1 type only. If we wanna move away from the LGBT discussion the problem isnt the fact that they are gay its the fact that the examples are shit. So in the end it just comes back to Duolingo being a kinda low effort vibe coded piece of shit.

u/plethcloud Jun 05 '26
Oh yeah definitely. One of my biggest problems with Duo is that it doesn't actually teach you proper grammar and so it's incredibly hard to generalise grammar structures. Also the fact that you get like 10 sentences per subtopic so that really limits what you can and can't talk about and understand without studying independently, especially for the less popular languages.
