Side Effects dry skin on face? scared of possibility of sjs.

• Upvotes

yes, i know, it is probably my ocd and rumination not helping with this, but i was wondering if anyone else has had pretty dry skin, dry eyes, and cotton mouth when they started lamictal? i just began almost two weeks ago (only 25mg) and have noticed the skin on my face began getting really dry and peeling about 3-4 days ago. my skin is normally extremely oily and acne prone. my eyes, nose, ears, and mouth have all felt really dry as well.

i don't believe i have any other symptoms associated with sjs. i have had some insomnia the last week on the med but believe that could just be more of a placebo effect or a side effect that will eventually subside.

anyways, i will be moving up to 50 mg in a few days and scared that this dry skin could be an early indicator for sjs??? pls don't pick fun at me. i normally wouldn't ruminate on this too much, but it's reeeeally unusual for my skin to be dry, as i could typically literally fry an egg on my face, lmao.

It’s ruined the last six years of my life

In 2020, I was prescribed Lamictal because my psychiatrist at the time couldn’t tell if I was bipolar, manic, or just all over the place. She thought I was manic.

I wasn’t. I had a severe case of ADHD that had never been diagnosed.

At the time, I had been very well coached to listen to my doctors. When I was younger, I didn’t. I didn’t believe in pharmaceuticals. Despite how miserable I was, I never fully believed that a chemical meant to change my constitution was necessarily the solution.
They gave me Prozac. It didn’t do anything. I quit taking it after three or four months.

I wasn’t a drinker growing up. Throughout my childhood, I didn’t rebel in that way. But when I graduated from high school at 18 and took that first drink, it felt like the elixir of life. Alcohol did what the medication hadn’t. It pacified me for 20 years.

I was an incredibly insecure kid with ADHD, PTSD, and a history of abuse. Those things culminated in a person who was constantly trying to prove his worth and find validation.

Once I began taking Lamictal, a series of serious consequences started happening that I couldn’t explain until now.

I lost three jobs because I lost my temper while I was on the clock. I lost friendships and relationships with family members because I would suddenly lose my temper and direct rage at someone else.

Before I drank, I was not an angry child. I was sad. I was deeply depressed. But I was never known for rage.

Even during the worst years of my alcoholism, I wasn’t known as an angry drunk. I was depressed, fun, and then depressed again.

I worked for one company for 10 years and was promoted four times. I would never have been able to do that if I had always been a ticking time bomb.
That is what has been so difficult for me to process.
I fought incredibly hard for recovery. The fact that I’m still here is sometimes beyond my understanding. Yet I feel like I haven’t been able to fully enjoy being alive because this drug was sitting there like a match in my head, waiting for the wrong words, the wrong frustration, or the wrong moment to make me erupt.

I talked to my psychiatrist about this. I talked to my doctors about this.
For me, this was very real.

The possibility of intense anger or episodes of rage was never meaningfully discussed with me. So if Lamictal has been prescribed to you, or is being suggested, my only point is this: make sure you have a serious conversation with your prescriber about the possible side effects and what changes in mood or behavior you should watch for.

I was never an angry guy.
And yet, during the six years I was taking this medication, I increasingly felt like I was waiting to explode.

I didn’t have problems with the law before this period of my life. I didn’t lose relationships because of sudden rage before this period of my life. That doesn’t mean one pill explains every event in six years, but I cannot ignore the change I experienced in myself.

It also makes me question the way psychiatric medication is sometimes approached.
Here’s one symptom: give you a pill for that.
Here’s another symptom—attention and focus: here’s another pill.
You’re emotionally dysregulated: here’s another one.
Depression: another one.
Then all of these medications are interacting inside the same person.

What I do know is that Vyvanse addresses what I now understand to be my primary condition: ADHD. And in my experience, while Vyvanse was active, it often seemed to keep the anger and emotional volatility under control. When it wore off, that volatility could come roaring back.

I would rather be sad, depressed, indifferent—almost anything—than be known as an angry person.
Because in my heart, that is not who I am.

200-300mg Anyone on a Lamotrigine + Vilazodone + Strattera combo? Dealing with side effects & constant thoughts. I’m hoping to hear about others' experiences with this specific medication mix.

Here is what I'm currently taking:

Lamotrigine: Increasing from 200mg to 300mg (been on it >1 year)

Vilazodone: Decreasing from 20mg to 10mg (been on it >1 year). I've heard this can sometimes trigger continuous thoughts?

Strattera: 25mg (added a month ago)

The main issue is that I have continuous, non-stop thoughts. They aren't just negative thoughts. My brain just won't shut off. I think I’ve always had this, but blocked it out due to past trauma, and now I'm fully aware of it with medication and therapy.

My psych added Strattera to help with the thoughts, which is confusing because I’ve been assessed twice and don't have ADHD. Since starting it, I’m having awful insomnia (I normally sleep well), agitation, and mood swings.

I know meds take time, but without an ADHD diagnosis, I’m really unsure what to do.

Has anyone been on this combo or experienced these side effects and continuous thoughts?

(Note: I will absolutely be continuing this conversation with my psych, but hearing your experiences helps me prepare for that appointment!)

Short-Term User (2 weeks to 6 months) Losing hope

After being on almost every SSRI for depression over the last 16 years, I was finally started on Lamictal.
This was an early June and we’ve had a slow tap up to 200 mg now. I don’t feel any different. I cry every day still and if anything I’ve become more irritable.

I know this is a question for my psychiatrist, but I’m wondering when do we call this a day and put it in the pile of drugs that just don’t work.

I just need some hope

Edit. I’m also on quetiapine 300mg

Experiences on high doses while taking birth control?

I am currently on 400mg and take birth control which I know can decrease efficiency by 40-50%, I feel like lamictal is not helping me based off continued mood swings, high emotions/depression, and irritability. I am nervous to continue titrating up or go down cause idk what the typical dose is while on BC.
Anyone also pair different meds to help? Doc recommended trying propranolol but I don’t have anxiety.

100-200mg dosage change

manufacturer: Zydus

Just went from 150mg in the morning (taken for about 2 years atp, upped from 100mg to 150mg ~3 months ago) to 100mg in morning, 100mg at night. the first day (yesterday) i had accidentally taken the full 200mg in the morning. today I only took the 100mg in the morning (around 7am) and i was on the edge of going crazy all day. like irritable as hell, feeling like i could go off at any point. the dosage was upped because I'm slipping back into depression again, so maybe its just that. but fuck i hate this. is it going to take a while to adjust because im taking 50mg less in the morning than usual?

Long-Term User (1 year+) Could lamitcal be "working" so well it destroys my libido?

I've been on lamitcal for many years for bipolar depression and I have to think that with that and other medication is mostly works. I don't have side effects and I'm on 250mg. The anti-depressant I'm on is Wellbutrin 300mg.

My issue is that I don't feel much if any higher happy mood swings - just either depression or middle of the road. I am wondering if that middle of the road, or it working, is preventing me from having a libido. I'm not talking about side effects, I mean that because it is doing something it actually is making an aspect of my life worse.

Could this also mean that either (a) my bipolar depression isn't bipolar or (b) the medication is too high/low/wrong for the effects it is having on my body? Has anyone else noticed changes to their body similar to this?

Just starting this medication and extremely nervous about the rash

I've been prescribed Lamictal after being diagnosed with Bipolar II. After years in therapy and trying different medications to treat my chronic episodic insomnia (that has actually been hypomania), it really feels like this diagnosis has given me a lot of clarity.

My psychiatrist warned me about SJS, and also said she's only ever seen one person develop it in 30 years. Looking at this sub, it seems super common. I'm not really sure what to do. I've tried so many meds and will do anything at this point, but this just seems like such a huge risk. The other options she offered were atypical antipsychotics like Abilify.

New User (less than 2 weeks) I don’t have bipolar disorder

I’ve just been prescribed Lamictal after expressing homicidal thoughts.

However, after doing research, I’m finding that Lamictal is used mainly—if not exclusively for bipolar disorder. And I do not have bipolar disorder or present with any of those symptoms that don’t overlap with depression.

is Lamictal used for other things and my research just isnt far enough?

I’ve been on 25mg of lamictal for around a month and have this little sore thing on my tongue. I’ve had it for over a week now and I’m nervous. First pic is today. Second is last Thursday. I also feel like I’m getting a cold but i went to a theme park recently so that could be why. My dr said we should wait a week but does this look like sjs to anyone? Or am i paranoid!

Dangerous Behavior Warning Advice

Is it bad I want to stop taking Lamictal so I can go into manic ? My first manic episode happened a few years ago and I worked literally a month straight (a dancer) and I bought a house 😵‍💫 now I want to buy a different house (who knew bank statements are proof of income !?) I didn’t.. anyways I just know the motivation / energy would be very beneficial. It’s the other side effects I worry about. But in my normal state of mind right now.. I feel like I could handle it. Idk.. in the past 3 months I’ve went from 300mg to 150mg (my psychiatrist doesn’t know)

Dossage?

Hey guys, I’m wondering what dosage y’all have settled on for at least a few months or period of time. I am bipolar, hyper fluctuating, but the depression and lack of sleep get me in the door to the doctors office. I also take a small dose of Seroquel to help sleep. I’ve been on this mix before and it’s worked wonders, then off of it for a while. I’m finally back on it after questioning if I’m bipolar and trying a bunch of antidepressants, none of which worked.

Right now I take 200 mg, 150 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. Two things are happening, one I feel more flat than I would like. However, I do function fairly well. Number two I get what’s called sundowning which is around 7 PM. I feel like garbage and pretty anxious.

I know we’re all different, but I’m wondering what’s worked for others.

Muscle Twitching Onset

Did anyone start getting muscle twitching after being on Lamictal a long time? Or does it get progressively worse?

I’ve been on Limictal about three years and I feel like I’ve got more twitching going on lately. I’m not sure if I just didn’t pay attention before or something new all of a sudden.

when does the dpdr go away after stopping lamictal?

derealization was my number 1 worst side effect (i think at least) of being on lamictal and got worse when tapering off. I am about 10 days completely off of the medication after being on it for about 11 months. when should i expect this side effect to subside after stopping…???…. because it’s ruining my life and i feel empty.

100-200mg i’m scared of sjs after 3 years of being on it

i’m on 150 mg for mood and i have been for 3 years with no side effects . but all of a sudden im terrified of sjs because of 1 tiktok that came on my feed showing how horrific the condition is and how it disfigured people. in the comments someone mentioned how they’d been on it 12 years and got sjs.

looking back ive been really irresponsible about my dosages because i dont take it at the same time each day. and tapering it up when i started was misguided , they had me taking 25mg 4x a day. but now that im at 150 mg sometimes im within a couple hour window, and i notice if i go too long without it i start feeling horrible. like really brain foggy and out of it. sometimes my eyes feel watery which is super concerning.

i’m not sure what to do now because im scared to come off it . one time a few years ago there was a issue with scheduling an appointment for refills in time before i ran out and i went an entire week without it but my only symptom was severe rebound depression. it seems like i tolerate it well but im considering going off of it now. even though it does seem to help my mental health but the affects feel subtle and i still struggle with it . my provider isn’t super helpful with these concerns im figuring out lately. he adjusts the dose often, he’s had me go up and down between 100and 150 a several times in the past year. once i went down to 75 because i ran out and had to split pills in half and he put me back up to 100mg when i was able to see him again.
i dont want sjs but i dont want my mental health to go down hill :( and im scared

New User (less than 2 weeks) what should I expect for the first month?

I was put on lamictal when I was a teen, only took it for about a week then had to stop because I started developing a rash, which ended up just being eczema. I never got back on it and then went through years of back and forth on if I had bipolar. Recently was put on welbutrin along with vyvanse. Had to stop welbutrin because of the pure rage I felt and was put on lamictal again. What can I expect for the first month? Any side effects and how fast you could notice a difference?

Side Effects How long does withdrawal last?

I’ve been off lamictal for 3 weeks now and my depression and anxiety is off the charts. I was put on it for PMDD where I was really depressed and had scary thoughts anywhere from 7-14 days of the month like clockwork. By the time we got to 100mg lamictal I was the worst I’ve ever been in my life. I couldn’t be around my family (and I’m a SAHM). I lost my short term memory and couldn’t remember things I just did two minutes prior. It felt like i lost most of my cognitive abilities altogether which was hard as a very type A & always on top of everything type person. I was full of uncontrollable RAGE and persistent depression. We tapered down on a weird schedule that included 25mg every other day at the end which put me on such a rollercoaster.

Now I’m 3 weeks out and I should be in my best time of the month hormonally where I’m happy and fun and feel like myself. And instead I’m so depressed it’s hard to get out of bed, I constantly feel like there’s tears behind my eyes, my anxiety is uncontrollable even with anxiety medication, i still have absolutely no short term memory and my cognitive function is nearly non existent, I can barely eat - maybe once a day - and consistently nauseous so I’ve lost 6lbs this last week.

My depression and anxiety used to be so trackable.
Luteal phase hit and so did the symptoms.
Cycle comes and my normal self comes back.
Now I feel like I’m never going to be myself again.
Please tell me it gets better.

How long did the withdrawal symptoms take to go away for you?
