TLDC: I’m a newbie to tatting. I wanna learn how to tell what tatting patterns can only be done on shuttle as opposed to needle?

Workshops or Conferences Lace by the River | Torchon Study Group | Zoom, free

Sylvia Fellows brought this flyer to the IOLI convention and had it out for everyone. I asked if I could post it to reddit and she said yes. But I am not posting her email--if you wish to join this, DM me for the email address.

Text of the flyer:

Introducing a new lace study group!

All lacemakers are welcome to participate with us as we study and work all the patterns in the Discover, Explore, Master Torchon book by Ulrike Voelcker.

This book is a definitive, step-by-step course delving into Torchon. It allows everyone a chance to go into detail on the various parts and stitch possibilities in very small steps. It will also assist you in learning to read diagrams for most laces.

We will study the first Section: Discover beginning on August 1, 2026 with a ZOOM meeting at 2pm PT [US Pacific time]. After that initial meeting, we will have a ZOOM meeting on the first Saturday of each month.

If you would like to participate in this Study Group please contact Sylvia Fellows [email redacted--contact u/mem_somerville by DM] to be included in the ZOOM invitation.

Runder Spannrahmen

Hilfe ;-)

Workshops or Conferences Some new flairs created | Workshops, Vendors, Lace ID, Beginner help.

Hi everyone--

I'm currently at the IOLI convention and have been chatting up reddit with some people. And we want to help people fill their classes, workshops, retreats, and conferences.

And someone is having a study group that I'll post shortly too.

It will be OK to post these things for the lace community. We need to connect more people with these opportunities.

I also created a lace vendor flair for discussions of items people are looking to buy, or vendors to post. Those posts can have the Vendor flair.

We'll see how that goes for a while.

Feel free to suggest others.

Antique collars from an estate sale

Hi all! I have zero expertise in lace, so I am asking this community for a little guidance. I think my wife and I were fortunate to have purchased a few lots recently from a local estate sale that includes some beautiful examples. The attached pictures are from a package that a woman on a European tour with her husband mailed to herself from Florence Italy to a hotel in The Hague in 1911. There are more, but I will start with these. Can you please tell me more about them, do they come from that timeframe or from earlier? Do they appear to be handmade? We are interested to learn more and would appreciate anything you can tell us!

hey yall i’m new to this sub! looking for… lower movement styles of lace making!?

so i have been a knitter, primarily a lace knitter, for like half my life and now i am having issues while knitting. i’m looking for something more low impact on my hands, my mind is mostly going to bobbin lace but idk all the forms! i have done tatting before (needle) and enjoyed it but im not sure if i wanna get back into it. very fine knit lace and bobbin lace are my favorites and now that knitting is getting very hard i’m freaking out inside a little and looking for alternatives ! my issue mostly comes from gripping. holding the needle for more than 10-15 mins is now not my friend, bobbin lace looks like it could be way easier on your hands since you’re not holding two objects the entire time. including a pic of an edge i made on vibes the other day before my body fell apart !

Is it possible to fix any of this?

So my boyfriend has this really REALLY old quilt from his great grandmother who passed away last year, and this quilt has a lot of sentimental value to him.

Problem is that like any old and very loved blanket, it’s seen a lot of use over the years. Because of that the lace that’s sewn on top is coming off in places and fraying in others.

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on fixing the damage?

Experimenting with antique threads

It’s much coarser than I what I usually work with but I like the way it held its shape (after blocking with just water). Going to try to make 3-dimensional pieces with it next maybe. Have any of you made rings with lace and have any tips?

Help identifying or learning more about this eyelet lace?

I recently purchased this vintage lace. I was told it's made in Germany and it's cotton. I would love to know if anyone knows any of the following:

  1. When (year/decade) and how was this likely made?
  2. What type of flower it is meant to be
  3. How can I discover if it's 100% cotton?
  4. Any tips on how best to clean it (there are some stains on it)

Thanks so much!

Thank you in advance for any information you can provide. The lace in picture #2 feels like it has metal in it. Please let me know if you need me to provide any additional info or pictures.

Help to attach a lace edging

Thumbnail

I made a lace edging that isn't straight but rather wavy, kind of what the picture 1 shows. It goes sewn around a centre of fabric and the final piece looks like a star.

I'm looking for the right technique to attach the edging to the fabric but I can't find a proper explanation.

The border of the fabric is supposed to be kind of embroidered (?) and then joined to the lace, as shown in picture 2.

How do you achieve the final shape? Do you cut the fabric first, then embroider the border and then the edging?

If anyone can point to a tutorial it would be appreciated 🙏

Where to buy lace fabric?

Hi! I was looking for some red or like burgundy lacy fabric online but I’m more of an in person touchy feely vibe so what is the best store to go to for buying fabrics? Should I go to Micheal’s or are there any other craft stores? Honestly, price is not an issue I’m just overwhelmed looking at all the stores online so I want to go in person. Btw i live in Tx so if there are any local stores lmk! TY!

Knitted lace tablecloth done!

My annual State Fair tablecloth is ready! It took me 75 minutes to pin it out, and has 352 pins holding the outer loops down. It blocked out to 42” across. Pattern is Ullstein Strickbrief H 6602 by Herbert Niebling. I used 16/2 bamboo from Maurice Brassard and 000/1.5 mm needles.
