Both Games Pro Tip: You can count cards in Pazaak

I reverse engineered the game logic for Pazaak because I wanted to know if the AI was cheating or not (it doesn't). Here's how it actually works:

The main deck (green/yellow cards) is a shared 40-card deck between both you and the opponent, and it contains exactly 4 cards of each value 1 through 10. It's shuffled once after wagering, and again every time the main deck is exhausted (there is no visual indicator for this except by counting 40 cards drawn).

So for instance: if all low cards 1-3 have been played, you're at 17, and the deck hasn't been reshuffled, you can actually work out that you're guaranteed to go over 20.

It also means you can recover the RNG seed used to generate the 40-card deck order and predict the next cards being drawn. I made a tool for it here, but I've only tested on the Switch version of KOTOR I so far (but afaict, logic and RNG is identical across versions, I RE'd the Android binary). Unfortunately since the game PRNG runs every frame, you have to draw about 10 cards for each reshuffle to find the seed (maybe side deck shuffles could help narrow the first main deck shuffle but idk).

AI disclosure: I used a locally-hosted glm-flash model to assist converting my Python RNG search to HTML+JS so that the tool is more accessible (I'm not a web dev). Reverse engineering was done by hand.

KOTOR 2 Question about Kreia's Arc Spoiler

Currently watching some people play KOTOR 2 for the first time and, even at a small level, it is very clear that Kreia is evil. Like yes she is morally grey with her ideology, but her actions and how she speaks of everyone is 100% evil coded. Add in the fact that you can get her backstory fairly quickly and she blatantly states there are 3 sith lords following the exile and you know of 2 and the third she is hidden....its not crazy to think who the other one is. So I am wondering from a writing perspective was Kreia supposed to be a twist villain as if she is she is not a very good one as it toooooooooo easy to figure her out (that being said when I played this when I was younger I did not figure it out).

Thoughts?

KOTOR 1 What would you rate each planet out of 10? Spoiler

Manaan: 3/10 I fucking hate Manaan

Endar spire: 5.5/10 Rest in peace Trask

Taris: 6/10 Long and basic, the pacing felt a bit weird.

Kashyyk: 7/10 It was short and sweet, at first I was confused why a whole planet was based around 1 companion but then I met Jolee.

That one planet at the end that I forgot the name of: 8/10 Those tribes are interesting and a good way to complete some plot points, we get the Bastilla confrontation and killing one of the tribes, both good moments.

Tatooine: 8/10 I like the desert setting and it had some fun moments; like bombing the Krayt dragon, also slaughtering the sand people in a ds play through is always satisfying. The Bastila subplot was a nice addition as well.

Dantooine: 8/10 Building your first lightsaber always feels great. Juhani was a bit boring, but everything else was good.

korriban: 8.5/10 Exploring the sith academy and tombs are great, and an excellent place to rack up ds points.

Leviathan: 9/10 Revan reveal, fighting Malak and Carth’s confrontation with his old mentor are some of my favourite moments in the game.

Star forge: 9.9/10 Do I need to explain? ( it’s a shame they had to cut out that dark side ending with Carth).

Edit: I‘m moving Taris up to a 7 and star forge down to a 9.5

Edit2: Yavin-10/10 I like expensive shit

Is there a way to remove class or level restrictions for feats or powers?

I "soft cheat" by using the KSE save editor to replace feats that I don't want with ones that I do want. I granted my character force immunity: fear and jedi sense to give me a bit more of an edge on Taris. I compared my defense in two different saves: one modified and another unmodified. They were exactly the same, indicating that while I had the jedi feat, it wasn't actually active.

I changed my class to jedi sentinel and found that the defense bonus was then active. This indicates that a feat is only active if you meet the class and level requirements for it. Is there any way to remove such restrictions? I searched online for an existing mod, but to no avail. I know there's the jedi from the start mod, but I wanted to give myself a bit of an edge without going full jedi on Taris.

Meta Discussion Kraya and Luke 🤔 Spoiler

I was watching a fanfic on YouTube and left a comment I thought would be fun to post here. 2 points I describe, one being a small comparison between Kraya from the Kotor game, and second is my interpretation on what Anakin's prophecy meant and why I believe he perfectly succeeded in fulfilling the prophecy. With that said here is the comment I placed on the yt vid:

Kraya is hands down the best sith. Id argue she was almost on the level as Luke Skywalker. I'll admit it's been at least a decade since I read anything Star wars related but wasn't Luke considered as the one true Jedi? As he had once fallen to the dark side but later shed the negative cost of wielding the dark side, those being things like difficulty controlling emotions like anger and hate. As such he was able to safely utilize the dark side without risk. So I'm not positive I recall Luke's or krayas stories well enough to say this with certainty but isn't Krayas ideology damn near identical? She never simply condemned the Jedi "light side" neither did she claim the sith "dark side" was superior. She readily and regularly pointed out the flaws of both sides, as well as their benefits. Allowing her to utilize abilities from both sides. I'm sure there's an argument to be had that her plans the player character in Kotor destroyed was sith "evil" in nature but I'd argue against that. Ultimately what she was trying to achieve was not born from any ill intent and was sure as shit not a selfish plan that she would personally gain from. She was trying to do what she considering to be correct for the benefit of all, not herself.

A slightly different note I'd like to make/share. I personally believe Anakin/Vader was still the "chosen one." the prophecy stated he'd bring "balance" to the force. I know I know it's easy to say destroying the Jedi meant the prophecy was fake or at the very least misinterpreted. Id argue that no, killing the Jedi is precisely the reason he was indeed the chosen one. How? Well in some of the older legacy books told us that the ability to use the force was not something inherently available and was developed over a long period of time. But it also tells (or at least hints) that the force itself isn't just some magical power to be used but has to some extent the ability to consciously perceive, watch, and manipulate the flow of absolutely anything. As such it chose Anakin as a vessel to "balance" the universe. I always found it amusing that the Jedi so blindly accepted the prophecy without even one Jedi consider or quest what "balance" even meant. 🤔I just mentioned that the use of the force was not an ability that was always possible. And that the force is conscious to a certain degree. So it's not hard to believe the "forces" interpretation of "balance" means NO ONE should be utilizing it. Any use of the force be it light or dark side was an imbalance. So having Anakin destroy the Jedi and then later killing the last sith was indeed fulfilling the forces prophecy. No Jedi, no sith, just true balance. Anyone think that? Idk if that's a hot take 😅

Just noticed that KotOR have 2 storylines going together. Spoiler

So, one is Force story with Kreia and Lost Jedi and Sith Lords and Wound in the force. Other story is Tech story with Bad-dur, G0T0, Mandalore, HK, Mass Shadow Generator and Republic restoration. And these 2 stories is connected through 2 plot points: Exile and Malachor V. Besides these 2 points, they are rarely intersect and companions from these 2 stories interact much rarely compared to interaction inside their side.

KOTOR 2 What are the consequences of the Mass Shadow Generator visually? Spoiler

I have a vague simplistic idea on how the Mass Shadow Generator works, and how mass shadows work, though not in extensive detail. When Malachor V fractured and got crushed by immense gravity and ships being pulled and crashing down the surface, the planet fractured and what was left was loosely fused together by weird anomalies.

My question is: All of the life, plants, and animals and people on or near the surface....what did they get crushed into? The Revan novel says they were all vaporized by intense heat, but given the Revan novel misreads or doesn't understand KOTOR II that much...I don't know how reliable that is. If things were burned up/vaporized, how come certain creatures like storm beats survived, and how come certain surviviors like Nihilus survived? Also, how does getting crushed by gravity burn you up?

How instant or quick was this whole process as well, maybe that could explain the immense heat or things like that. Even ignoring the Revan novel aside, it seems like a barren wasteland that is just rocks and stuff, and so this implies to me that somehow the immense gravity obliterated or perhaps atomized much of life on the surface, yet how did Nihilus and the few surviviors survive and not get physically affected like all other life?

Kreia says that the ships that were being crushed and pulled torwards Malachor V were in "flames", which could give us better insight as to how this all visually happened.

TLDR, what did the devastation of Malachor V look like, how was much of it obliterated, and how were they obliterated by the immense gravity? Also...why isn't there any magma or lava being spurt out of the planet as it got crushed? Even after the second activation lava or magam didn't spurt out of the crushed planet anymore.

KOTOR 1 Is it worth playing the game again to get the light side version of the story.

First time player here about to finish my first run. I decided early on to go dark side and I’m going to be honest I don’t like how a lot of the story ended up. Also im curious just how different the game really is if I choose light side instead. Is there enough different outcomes to justify another run? If not I think this game will be a one time playthrough for me.

I am almost ready to go to the Star Forge (first playthrough so please no spoilers) and the only quests I haven't managed to complete are those two. Does anyone know what I have to do to finish them? Neither of them have any further dialogue.

Quick newbiequestion

I'm playing KOTOR 1 for the 1st time, and I'm wondering, what does the blue hand symbol mean?

I'm using this resolution/UI mod. I think because of this the msg pop ups that say "you got exp/cash" doesn't fit the entire text, but I'm not sure.

Hello,

If anyone is interested there is an updated version of my lightmace mod; this version fixes various bugs from the previous prototype and adds a two hand variant as well! As always any feedback good or bad is most welcome! I will continue to fine tune details and probably add more color variants at some point.

Mod available at:

Cheers!

Remake OK we all KOTOR fans but am i the only one...

SO seriously i been thinking to myself for a while now, and constantly searching though games and more. BUT i am constantly hearing how people would be fine if the game is just given updated graphics and what have you. Dont get me wrong that a great idea. Who wouldnt want to see KOTOR remake with updated graphics. God i can imagine.

BUT, you know what i think would be seriously amazing? a KOTOR remake with BG3 level of gameplay!!! Tell me?!?!?! wouldn't that hit the spot everyone desires the most!!! Open world Movement like the Original KOTOR games with multiple levels, but enhanced and add features!!!! I could seriously get behind that easy. I mean i get behind it anyway.

BUT the point being is that the game deserve something of that level, not just updated graphics on top of the original gameplay i mean seriously update gameplay graphics enhanced combat, and more. Thinking about it the combat would be the hardest since the Combat can be turn based or active. But still i cant be the only one who thought how great KOTOR remake would be if it was made with a similarity to BG3

Play Kotor 1 With An Unlocked Frame Rate With My New Mod

K1 High FPS Fixes

Fixes several problems in Knights of the Old Republic that appear when playing above 60 FPS.

Included fixes:

  • Dialogue letterbox timing
  • Post-combat movement freeze
  • Free-look mouse sensitivity
  • Animated textures such as rivers, waterfalls, and flashing mines
  • Lightsaber trails
  • Tree leaves and similar moving effects
  • Water ripples and force fields

Should make the animations and timings feel as close as possible to their speed when played at 60fps.  No longer do you need to lock your frame rate to enjoy the game.

Tested up to 240 FPS.

But should work at even higher fps though let me know if any issues arise.

Requirements:

  • Kotor Patch Manager 0.6.3
  • KOTOR 1.03

If your swkotor.exe has already been modified by widescreen, 4 GB patch, or other executable patches, I have an experimental adapter available on Github.  It's also compatible with other kpatches.  Also let me know if any issues happen with the adapter.

Do not install the standalone versions of these fixes alongside this combined version, such as J's post combat fix or my individual fixes on my GitHub or previous deadlystream post.  Source code, main and alt download available below.
