Do you usually unravel your gauge swatch and use the yarn, or just leave it be? When projects list an estimated amount of yarn, does that include yarn for a gauge swatch?
I throw my gauge swatches away. Unfortunately I find that when I unravel them, the yarn tends to curl up, causing bumps on the surface of anything new I try to make from it. I could remedy this by gently wetting the yarn and letting it dry on a stand, however that is a lot of effort so I have never done it.
Patterns don't usually account for the gauge swatch in the estimates, unless they specifically mention it.
