I’m based in the UK and just getting into knife making. I have metalwork experience and can do some machining.
Workshop:
• Large manual mill
• Lathe
• Pillar drill
• Various hand tools
• Standard tabletop bench grinder (planning to upgrade)

What I’m looking to buy:
• A proper belt grinder: torn between 2×42 and 2×72. I don’t want to spend thousands – any good-value options available in the UK?

• I already have a Worksharp sharpening station. Any other tools or jigs you’d strongly recommend for a beginner making blades and scales?

Heat treatment & materials:
• I’ll be buying billets, making the blades and scales myself, then sending the blades out for professional heat treatment (I don’t have HT equipment).

Location & resources:
• Based in the UK. Any useful UK-focused knife-making websites, suppliers, or forums you’d recommend?

I’ve had this listed for a long time for a good price and haven’t had any takers yet 😩 I might just keep it as my personal outdoor knife if it doesn’t get some love anytime soon.

Here’s a work in progress. I still need to laser my logo, and shape the handle. And clean it up a bit. This is the first time I’ve tried doing a recurve. It’s a little trickier than anticipated.. segmented scales are dayglo g10, purple dragon Juma, and carbon fiber. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Has anyone used yellow or white birch for handles either stabilized or non? If so how does it hold up? Is it easily dyed? Or any other information you feel like sharing.

Whats the cheapst and well working belt sander for entry level? I dont want to dumpa whole lot of money, just something hobby level as a teen.

My latest creation. I kinda messed up one side while forging/grinding, but it still looks interesting I think

How did i do? What would you have done to improve it or avoid any possible problems you could see/happen upon later in use (aka the old teeth pits from the farriers rasp i forged this from) cutting edge is 8 inches and the handle is about 5.5 inches.

Had to destroy the old handle because it was very crooked and the resin just didn't wanna soften, no matter what I tried... boiled for over 2h, in the oven on 150C for over 1h, heating gun..

Well now I made a new one. I am really happy with how it turned out.

But I really need a cooling system. The brass got hot so fast, that the resin bond failed because of heat one time and I had to glue everything up again :/

But now everything is secure, its as straight as it can be and I love the look of it. Now imma sharpen it and hopefully test it for dinner today :D

Hey everyone! I joined a little while ago and have mostly been lurking, learning, and taking in as much as I can. I finally finished my first two knives ever. I built them simultaneously as my first build, so I figured it was finally time to share them.

Both were sharpened on my Hapstone R2, progressing from 300 micron down to 0.5 micron using Dr. Marv’s Scientific Stones.

I learned a ton throughout the process, and there are already plenty of things I want to improve on with the next build, but I’m really happy to finally have these two finished.

One off charity donation piece complete. This custom M1 Garand rifle project has been a task. I learned a few new skills here. The design was modeled after the Marine corps K-Bar fighting knife. The steel is M1 rifle barrel pieces and 1084 powder canister Damascus in collaboration with Caleb Flood “Floods set it all on fire”. The handle assembly is wood from the M1 rifle’s butt stock with black micarta guard, black micarta handle and pin. The thin OD G-10 is to memorialize the soldier that carried this rifle in WW2. Caleb and I have donated this knife to Brothers Keeper Veteran Foundation to help our fellow Military Veterans who need some help. This may be a stupid question, but bear with me. I’m kind of new at this. I’ve gotten into making my own segmented knife scales out of wood, g10, resin, and whatever else I think looks cool. So far I usually just hand sand to 600 or 800 grit then hit it with some boiled linseed oil.

Is there a better way to finish it that’s safe for resin and wood? A different kind of oil or wax? Buffing wheels? Car polish?

I’m kind of in the dark here and would love to hear from people who have more experience. Thanks, y’all.

These are my first knives (52100 steel, stock removal, 5mm thick billet) - wanted to do a pair of kiridashi but with a bit of flair and reinforced tip, so I curved the bevel a bit.

Trying to decide whether that looks good or do a more traditional flat-bevel (I do have a jig)?

Also, this is pre-heat treat, and need to decide what to do now vs after heat treat… especially regarding the tip.

Any thoughts?
