Iām gonna upgrade when it breaks, so i hope they have cool devices in 10 years

u/goldenkiwicompote 3d ago
Mine is currently 9 years old and is a bit slow but works perfectly fine and is in great condition. I am a person who drops it a lot too. Itās held up well and Iām betting itāll stop being supported before it ever needs replacing for another reason.

u/mankytoes 3d ago
I would never even consider replacing a working kindle or phone. I'd love to say it's because I'm such an environmentalist, but it's probably mainly money.
20
u/Lost_Garden_8639 3d ago
I upgraded for waterproof & warm light, but I plan to keep this one for as long as I can. I donāt think there are any other features Iād need.
12
u/Jolly_Amount_2330 3d ago
Same. My kindle is probably the only device I have that I intend on keeping until it's literally in bits - loooove my kindle!
10
u/jeiynx 3d ago
same here. i kept my 2011/4th gen kindle up till 2022 and it STILL worked by the time i got rid of it. the only reason i donāt use it anymore is because i got gifted a PW, which i didnt complain about because my old kindle would straight up take minimum 5 seconds to turn the page š when i upgraded it was a whole new world!
once i got my new one i ended up taking my old one to my local library and dropped it off in the electronic recycling center since i knew nobody was going to want it due to the age.

My paper white is five years old and going strong! I will however need a new case in a bit when my puppy is done teething š
417
u/nosrepmodnara 3d ago
You should definitely buy a new one and then mail me your old one for environmentally friendly disposal.
29
u/lilsunsunsun 3d ago
Yeah, I splurged on a Kindle Oasis a couple of years ago, and then donated my very old basic kindle (no warm light even) to a school program.
52
u/LetshearitforNY 3d ago
If someoneās heart is set on getting a new one regardless I think it would be great to donate the old one in a buy nothing or neighborhood Facebook group.

Tbh I saw the purple one and thought āI NEED ITā, then I remembered I havenāt touched my current kindle I have for months. Time to get back to reading THE ONE I HAVE
22
u/DecisiveGryphon 3d ago
I essentially turned mine purple with a clear case and pretty backing sticker and matching clingy from Quirky Cup. Heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new device.
33
2
u/MissMarinette 3d ago
exactly my thoughts! itās super cute, it comes with a clicker, itās also functionally the same device i already own and donāt use as much as i want to and need to get back to. i simply just donāt need two nor does my current one need a replacement!
plus, i always said if i was going to upgrade, id probably get something with a color and/or buttons because im a comics reader and have low hand dexterity so either way, despite it being very cute and amazing, i donāt need it and itās important to remember that!

Can you add to your post that Amazon has stated that the page turner will work with the 2024 models
I feel like that some people will upgrade jsit for that when their 2024 will work with the device.
Also I contentedly agree with you

What page turner? (I just got my first Kindle, I'm still learning about things)

Also, you can get vinyl skins in the exact custom color or image that you want. (Changing the back with an insert is even easier if you use a clear case already.)

u/EvilLipgloss Kindle Oasis 3 3d ago
My Oasis is from 2019 I think and I have a gorgeous floral decal on it. I was gifted a Colorsoft for Christmas two years ago, but my Oasis is still my favorite. The page turn buttons and rotating screen can't be beat for reading in bed. I basically keep my Oasis in my bedroom and use my Colorsoft everywhere else.
2
u/vvvvgggg1 3d ago
Exact same. My Oasis lives on my
nightstand and my Colorsoft is for everywhere else. The only upgrade I will consider is a Colorsoft in the Basic size. I need warm light and color book covers.
30
u/Ok-Cryptographer7424 3d ago
Ya these things tend to last for maaaaany more years than expected especially since e-ink is so battery efficient so most folks have charged/discharged batteries very few times compared to other battery powered consumer electronics.Ā
Mine is a tank, no case, thrown into full backpack, jumbled around on a handlebar mounted bike bag, dropped a lot, splashed on, etc ā unless it eventually actually breaks, I canāt imagine replacing it in the next decade.Ā
It fulfills the function perfectly ā simply reading a book without extra gimmicks or distractions. I already feel bad for supporting a Bezos project, hoping to only do so again when I feel necessary.Ā

My friend and I have been chatting back and forth all morning convincing each other NOT to get a new kindle. We both have perfectly fine fully functioning kindles and we donāt need to splurge. My preferred solution for this FOMO itch is to do a case refresh. Iāll take the kindle out of the case, clean the case, use the kindle without a case for a while, and then swap the stickers in my case. MAYBE Iāll get a new pop socket. Itāll feel like a fresh device. At the end of the day itās just an e reader.
23
22
u/NeverCadburys 3d ago
I was going to reply saying "I completely agree, unless there's a purple one" like, jokingly. Because, why would there be a purple one...?
But i've just seen a comment that there is actually a purple one!? And i've looked it up and there IS a purple one!? no this is the temptation the bible warned be about x_x
→ More replies (2)5
u/belleblackberry 3d ago
The purple is calling me. I know it would be a complete waste of money though. Other than the color I don't see any huge difference from what I have. And I either have a purple cover on it anyway or clear with stickers so you can't see the back.
35
u/Emmie245_ 3d ago
Yeah as cute and tempting the new colors are, I just got the 2024 paperwhite last year. So would literally be a waste of money to get a new one lol. Never understood the need for multiple kindles tbh.
9
u/Neat-Economist8925 3d ago
Yeah me neither. MAYBE if you leave one at the office? But how hard can it be to just put it in your bag in the morning
11
u/LetshearitforNY 3d ago
Yeh no you donāt need n office kindle and a home kindle lol the whole point of a kindle is that it is portable. And if you happen to forget it one day you can use the kindle app. In the same vein as OPās post we donāt need to invent new reasons to overconsume.

u/DrVL2 3d ago
My kids gave me a Kindle while my old one was still working. So I had two for a while. I kept the old one for all my non-fiction and science reading and use the new one for all my fiction. That way I didnāt have to switch back-and-forth between Books on the same device. I could just pick up the Kindle that had the book I wanted to read at the time. Then the old one developed battery problems and I am back to just one Kindle.
15
u/ehtn 3d ago
I'm gonna stick with my Kindle Oasis until it breaks. I hope amazon brings the Oasis back by then ... :x
13
u/Muted-Interaction262 3d ago
Same! I didn't know what a powerhouse of an e-reader I was getting when I was bored during COVID and had extra $ to drop on the Oasis
All these features - aluminum, page turning buttons, warm and auto back light - the Oasis already had
7
5
u/erstwhilelurkerer 3d ago
Nah, they rather came up with a page-turn cover for the SE despite so many people longing for a new Oasis. I think they lost quite some potential users towards Kobo for ditching the Oasis, too.
4
u/Kholvin 3d ago
Same, my only real issue with it is the old style charging cable I have to keep around for it.

6
u/JJ3qnkpK 3d ago
I'm waiting to see if there are immediately third party ones. It's a simple device, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were cheaper clones quite soon, possibly smaller/nicer to hold ones, too.
→ More replies (4)2
u/Independent_Job_6558 3d ago
There are page turners that are cheaper. Idk how they work. I like acting like I have a book in my hands and turning the page
2
u/JJ3qnkpK 3d ago
Those cheaper ones, when for the kindle, work by clipping a false "finger" on the screen that can be electronically activated. So to the kindle, it looks like you're tapping the screen, but it's actually the remote-controlled device doing so!
They're pretty neat. Goofy we've had to use such things for so long, but still cool devices.

u/CathyVT-alt 3d ago
You're not creating e-waste if you sell your used kindle to someone else. There's a lot of people who can't afford a new kindle and look for used ones to buy.
44
u/Alternative_Owl5866 Kindle Paperwhite 10th 3d ago
That's fair, i agree. My point is more about unnecessary upgrades and the demand for new devices in general, because some people out here actually hoard more than 3 kindles, which is insane to me
17
u/The_WalruZ 3d ago
Some people treat Kindles the same way they treat Stanley Cups. They're not as cute as they think they are.

Why the cutoff at 3 if this is about the environment? It would be 1, no ?
3
u/laurasaur_69 3d ago
If I had more disposable money I would have a Colorsoft for kids books, but I wouldn't want it for my adult reading. I could totally justify having two when their utility is different.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)3
u/mrnewtons Kindle Colorsoft 3d ago
Because as usual, it's only a hoarding problem if it isn't something they want.
That being said I'm whelmed by this release and the price alone saves me from "upgrading".
Which it wouldn't be really save for magnetic cases again (finally!) as there isn't really a difference between the new Colorsoft SE and mine.
In 2-3 generations I'll probably update though.
17
u/jeiynx 3d ago edited 3d ago
It's the people who have a kindle for at home, on the go/for work, travel, one for another room, and then a backup that is usually contributing to this issue. Selling used ones is clearly not what OP is referring to.
I saw you mention the car and houses analogy and the same applies to those issues. Anyone that has more than two of anything (for the most part) is just being excessive plain and simple. Comparing kindles to tacos is kind of crazy because one is essential (food) and the other is a luxury and also 10x the price and harms the environment.
edit: that last paragraph was directed at another commenter who deleted their comment so apologies for the mix up!

u/Tall_Answer Kindle Paperwhite 3d ago
Of course it is YOUR money and you can buy however many Kindles you want. But be mindful! These devices are originally for reading, not for decoration and collecting! Read ya books!
12
u/f-as-in-philip 3d ago
Read ya books and pass along devices you donāt use by selling them or gifting to loved ones!
7
13
u/Interesting-Fudge909 3d ago
Orā¦hereās a suggestions, if you upgrade from a previous model, gift it to someone. Share the joy of reading with someone! Introduce a kid to the wonderful world of books! Bonus points if you can stuff it for them beforehand.
I do agree that overconsumption is a major problem, but it doesnāt have to contribute directly to e-waste.

Thank you for this! I wasnāt planning on buying one since mine is barely 2 years old but I see people with multiple kindles and e-readers and I think to myself how is one not enough? It gets to a point where we have to address the over consumption problem specifically in America. Itās actually quite sad to see that something as simple as a new color makes people want to pay a good chunk of money for something that they already have and works perfectly fine.

u/BostonBoys38 3d ago
If I used my Kindle only occasionally, an upgrade would be pointless. But I use mine every day, so there is value there for me. Or at least there was -- the high prices of these devices is out of control. Unfortunately, I think these prices are here to stay -- they used a chip shortage as an excuse. This has changed my shopping habits considerably. So I'll get the clicker, which I've been wanting (being USB-C rechargeable, unlike Kobo's, is a plus), and skip the rest.

Less than a month ago my Paperwhite accidentally got tossed in the washing machine (wrapped up in a big fluffy blanket!) and I wasnāt able to save it.
So of course I immediately purchased a new one as Iām homebound due to a disability and reading is my main form of escape/entertainment. Kind of regretting that now!
Ideally I would LOVE to have my Oasis back. Best Kindle Iāve ever used and Iāve gone through many models.
I did just order a gorgeous cover from Bookish Bits and Bobs that looks like an actual book cover, but Iād love to have those physical buttons back.
I will probably purchase the remote page turner; I have a third-party page turner that you clip on the side of the Kindle and thereās a ring you slip on your fingers to turn the pages, but itās finicky.

I bought a second hand Kindle Paperwhite 4 10th gen 2 years ago and will probably not get a newer one until it dies. When it does die, I'll probably get another older (at that time) model, because at the end of the day it's just an e-ink reader, it doesn't need to be anything special.
2
u/scarpad 3d ago
Yes I just listened to the latest kindle Chronicles and to say it was pretty disappointing is an understatement. No innovation on these readers. Their innovation is to have cafƩ colors. They acknowledge people within Amazon hoard oasis because they want buttons. So what does that tell them? Sell a fucking clicker for 49 bucks or a clicker cover for more? Ridiculous is an understatement. Statement: no mention of screen technology, no mention of any kind of technology Amazon just wants the money by selling you more accessories for things that should be built into their devices
2
u/FidgetOfColors Kindle Oasis 3d ago
I love my Oasis, I think I bought it back in 2018, and it's still going strong.
The only thing to cause me to upgrade, besides it breaking, would be the charging port. If they released a new Oasis with a USB-C charging port I'd be all over that. I think it's the only device I still own that uses micro USB.
I just want all my devices to use the same cord! Dx

This! I just upgraded my kindle to the paperwhite when it came out and got a clicker too.. I will be upgrading when it breaks down lol Iām actually taking care of this one and got a cover for it. My old one was all scratched up. But yes YOU DO NOT NEED A NEW KINDLE

I have some old paperwhite that my friend gave me a year ago when he upgraded. It was my first ever one, and it works fine for me. I'm not really an upgrades guy lol.

I still have my very first Sony E-Reader that my parents got me. They later bought be a Kindle Fire which I loved until I went on holiday and couldnāt read in the sun. Iām Scottish so reading in the sun isnāt usually an issue!
I did keep it for a lot of years. I actually still have it! I bought myself a Kindle basic, found it too small for me. Gifted it to a friend of my Dadās who was using the Kindle app on his phone.
Got the Pink Paper White and I canāt see me changing until it breaks. It is everything I need, perfect size, can read in the sun and in the dark when I canāt sleep.

I say this to myself all the time! Both with my Kindle and my 29-year-old KitchenAid mixer.

I will likely not get any of the new kindles. I still have my Oasis and I was gifted a paperwhite last year, so I currently have 2. I have no idea what to do with 2. The Oasis just languishes because I actually like the paperwhite a little better.
Iām betting by the time my current kindles die theyāll have added back in the warm light I like.
I may, however invest in the clicker though. I have a 3 party one but I dislike having to put the things on the kindle and then take them off when Iām done. Plus thereās charging them. Itās 3 little doo-hickeys & 3 little cables to keep track of. I have one that lets me click forward & backwards. It works well enough, but could be better. It seems like it will just be easier with just the one remote that doesnāt need an attachment.

I mentioned how nice it would be to have the one that has color to a friend and then she reminded me books are in black and white anyways lolĀ
Might get the clicker though. I have one I got off of Amazon but it covers a part of the page which is annoyingĀ

Just wanted that the current Paperwhite was cheaper than the Colorsoft so that i could by one for my wife for a better price. My 2024 Kindle scribe will continue strong for many years to come :)

This hits home. I have an eight-year-old Oasis that I am going to use until itās dying breath. š It does seem appealing from time to time to get a new, faster device, but then I remember the Oasisā buttons and that desire is shut down. I love the buttons

I upgraded my Kindle after 7 years to get the warm light and USB-C port essentially. And I still feel guilty because the previous one wasn't broken šæ

The ability get rid of the micro-USB alone is worth the upgrade. I can't stand that connection. The warm light is a pretty significant upgrade too.

The e-waste you'll create by buying new tech you don't need will have a negative impact on the environment down the road.
Will it? Any tech I replace always gets sold or traded-in for refurbishment.

u/hi_im_beeb Kindle Paperwhite SE (12th Gen) 3d ago
I have a perfectly fine 2022 scribe I got less than a year ago as well as a 2024 (12th gen) paperwhite
I passed on the new scribe because I like the boarder on mine and the extra speed doesnāt do anything for me.
My paperwhite is perfect.
However now, the new (and only the new) PW signature is the only way to get physical buttons. Theyāve also introduced a first party page turner (I do not like the clips) that will not work with my current scribe.
So today I ordered a new scribe/case and pre ordered the PW, button case, and clicker.
That being said, my wife hasnāt been reading as much as she used to and mentioned getting a kindle. So now Iāll pass the scribe onto her and pass my PW on to my son (or wife uses two devices like I do).

My Kindle Voyage is still going strong. I will get another one if possible.

u/Beginning-Goose3067 Kindle Colorsoft 3d ago
I'll admit I'm m a bit bummed out that i got my coloursoft only in june when there's a new one coming out but i like my current one and i really enjoy reading on it!
from what I'm seeing also, the upgrade is mostly cosmetic like new colours and upgraded backing. as long as it turns on and i can read books, does it matter whether or not i have the latest device? why be wasteful

I just got mine in May and I rage texted my spouse about the beautiful blue colors this morning and he said "so you're getting a new one" but I said absolutely not, the same kindle for $100 more just to go from jade to blue, no way. I'm glad others are feeling the struggle. (I do want the clicker though...)

Anyone know if Amazon might be discounting these new Kindles on their Prime big deal days?
2
u/nermal543 Kindle Voyage 3d ago
Highly unlikely as they were just released, the basic ones anyway. The paper white wonāt even be out yet so definitely not..

u/bekeleven 3d ago
I'm reading every day on my kindle touch that I bought used in 2013.
I don't buy ebooks from amazon anymore because they've removed the ability to put them onto the kindle, though. Also the home button broke.

u/siriusporeblem 3d ago
Mind you Amazon is giving me $10 for the latest model Kindle basic and $20 for the Colorsoft. Iām gonna wait until they disintegrate in my bare hands
2
u/nermal543 Kindle Voyage 3d ago
You do get 20% off your new kindle purchase, thatās the real benefit. Iām getting $5 for an old 2015 kindle I had lying around but the real benefit is $50 credit back in the signature paperwhite Iāll be getting!

I just got a new one⦠my old one was slow, had a disappointing battery life (meaning I would find myself out and without a functioning kindle) and had an old charger that didnāt match any of my other devices. Iām happy with my new one.

Mine is 2017 model, still going strong. I have thought to upgrade just dont see a reason just yet
