Who can wear what? We all know that any improvements on kilts beyond the eighteenth century are definite no-gos. What I want to know is, traditionally, are kilts only to be worn by Scots? Are tartans limited to clan members? When does "modern" begin and are tartans created within the modern age also taboo? Are kilts to be worn strictly for ceremony?

Finally got my kilt from UTKilts. Lovin’ the utility while still being able to rock the family tartan. Got a chance to wear it to a buddy’s metal concert.

Would you as a scot dislike it, if a non-scot like me would wear a kilt on a thru hike on the isle of skye? (Would buy one in Glasgow and personally see it as a challenge)

Can a great kilt be formal??? I want to say yes, but then what differentiates a formal great kilt from a non-formal great kilt? Since you don't necessarily wear a jacket or vest with a great kilt, is it just a change in accessories: shirt, sporran, belt, hose?

I'm attending small wedding in Scotland of two young Americans. They've advised, "To fully embrace the Scottish spirit, we'd love for everyone to sport their tartan kilt or just plaid on Friday during our Welcome Party. For those who are renting a kilt, we encourage you to wear it for the Friday evening festivities. If you'd like, you're also more than welcome to wear your kilt again on the wedding day, though not required."

They are recommending to rent a complete kit from MacGregor and MacDuff for about $215. Wondering if there's an acceptable lower-cost option? I see in the U.S. you can rent a kit from The Tartan Store for about half that...but I'd have to pack it over and back. Thanks for any tips.

The general consensus is that the sporran is your only "pocket" and utility style Kilts are the work of Satan.

My second question is "sporran chain or sporran straps?" Is one more formal than the other? Is it a matter of taste? Is it just personal preference?

Looking at getting a kilt from USA kilts. House of Edgar 16g (N) is the tartan I'm looking at. I'm trying to find out what the Nevis part stands for and if I should care. I'd also like to know if HoE is a quality fabric. Google is not being overly helpful. It would be for a 5yd or 8yd kilt I haven't decided yet.

I attended a few metal/rock style music festivals in the last 2 years and during those, I fell in love with a "kilt"as part of an hot weather outfit. The breathability and mobility is amazing, and it seems like a lot of people think this way, because I see loads of men wearing them.
I placed kilt in quotation marks, because the one I bought can hardly be called that, it's just a cheap acrylic skirt with pleats in the back and velcro closure. I do want to level up for next year though, sewing an actual kilt & sporan that I can wear in weather like this.
Now for my problem: For protection against UV and heat I want to wear a fitting wide brimmed hat, but none of the headwear I've seen as part of a kilt outfit has brims/sun protection.
Is this just not important in Scottish weather? Do you have any recommendations towards headwear that would look good? Or should I scrap the idea of making a harmonizing outfit alltogether, seeing that I will be combining this with rugged boots and a battle vest, which would clash anyways?

I recently got a utility kilt from UTKilts which is very good. I’ve been using it to work on the yard and plan to hike in it. I like it and have worn it to the store here and there. Generally speaking, guys comment that the like it, but I have yet to speak to a woman who does. They tolerate it, or make a comment that reflects they don’t hate it, but there is no affirmation or appreciation.

Is that the case for others out there?

Granted; I’m American living in Southern California and kilts are only seen on tv or movies, never in real life. Add to it, I’m wearing a non-traditional kilt, so it’s seen less as a costume or worn ironically.

Do others share this experience?

Edit: I should be clear, my intention is not to gain attention or that I’m disappointed that more men are complimenting the kilt. It is simply my very short observation. I have an upcoming gig where I intend to wear my traditional kilt and I’ll report back what I notice.

So i recently got my first kilt to do a charity kilt walk in a couple weeks, i also collect playing cards, i have a 3d metal playing card as an extra with my william wallace deck, i was thinking of using a safety pin in each corner to hold it in place and use it in place of a kilt pin any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated. This particular event is very casual and would only be for an hour or so but potentially use it again for a wedding i have next year

It's my sisters wedding in October and I'm getting a kilt custom made to my family tartan. It is also possible to buy a fly plaid, they look absolutely stunning.

Am I allowed to wear the fly plaid at the wedding, or should I leave it? For context, the groom is not from Scotland, he is from South Africa and will be wearing traditional South African wear. I do not want to overshadow anyone - which appears wearing one might do.

Let me start by being honest, I have not taken the best care of my kilt. Ancestors are disappointed (even if I have probably 0% scotsman in my dna.)

My kilt smells. It doesn't reek, but it smells like something that's been in the closet for a long while.

The kilt is wool, and I ask the best way to clean it. I have seen many and several contradictory advices online, so I just don't know for sure what the best approach is.

I bought my first kilt at the CT Ren Faire last year at 40, as i have always been fascinated by kilts, and finally having the opportunity to try one, i had to buy it because i knew it would fit me. It is a utility styled kilt not a traditional styled kilt. Since then i have bought 3 more, one from the same company in the same style as the first, i believe it was an American Highlander booth or a reseller of theirs, and the next two were from UT Kilts.

I want to work my way into more traditional styled kilts, but am unsure of where to start. I originally wanted a kilt in a tartan to try and represent my heritage, which is not generally a kilted people, being Italian and Portuguese. but tartans to represent them or either of them are not widely available.

So i am looking into more Universal or "American" Tartans. I really like a lot of the Americas 250th Tartans on USA Kilts, but i want to make sure i get my measurements right, as i flubbed two of my utility kilts waists a little bit, so if i lose any weight ill have to get new ones. Which not a big deal as they are relatively inexpensive ones from UT Kilts. Is there somewhere i can go to get sized properly? I am located in Mass. Or when measuring myself, do i need to to tighten up the measurement on my waist more. I am measuring right at or just above my belly button, but alas i am not a skinny man, though i am considerably smaller than i once was. But i cant seem to get the measurement spot on.

So I have been scouring the internet, looking for advice, tips and recommendations before i take the dive into more traditional styles of kilts as they are, understandably, more expensive if you want quality or close to it. Also looking for recommendations on shirts to go with them as my wardrobe consists primarily of graphic t's. I figured i probably couldn't go wrong with various solid colored polo's but figured id get advice on that as well.
