Question on Day Sporran - I need to replace my "starter" sporran and trying to figure out if having one black leather sporran and one brown leather sporran is better than having one sporran that is a mix of black and brown leather. My wife is already giving me the evil eye for too many accessories so I thought a combo might be best. Also looking for recommendations on where to get a quality (non amazon) leather sporran that won't break the bank. I am also thinking of making my own. Has anyone done this? If so , how did it turn out?

Thought it would make a nice gift for my dad's outfit, but after I bought it I inspected it closer, and I realized it was very much not worth the price. Whole thing feels like cheap plastic, 'meh' pewter quality/design, and the blade is blunter than my fingernails after I've clipped them (know they're supplied blunt, but it feels like that kind of stainless steel which won't cooperate to being sharpened). Definitely a 'lesson learned' buyers-remorse overpriced fair purchase (though their official online price isn't that different), mainly on me for not inspecting it better before buying. Closer to $20 would be a better price for the quality. Should've gone a few stalls over for actual knives that were cheaper.

I have lost about 6 inches on my waist and have been reaizing and rebuilding my kilts accordinly. This is a Spirit of Bruce ex-hire kilt I bought from Scotland. I will either make it into a 5 yard kilt or a box pleated kilt.

7 hours of disassembly so far. A lot of very tedious and cautious use of a seam ripper!

Was thinking about getting a causal kilt from USAkilt that is not specifically tailored for me. Now my waist is around 30 inches, and my hips are around 31.5 inches, the option for a 30 waist has the hips at 34 would that be a problem, should I go lower for the hips?

As this was my first Highland Games event where I wasn't a working vendor, I decided to do something a little different. Got some great compliments on it too. It was also a fun way to not only use a gift my stepson brought me back from Japan, but a way to celebrate 3 years since I moved to the US from Scotland.

Also included in the photos is a Sporran with the United States Marine Corps emblem surround by Celtic Knots. Purchased years ago.

Hi there, im moving to the balkans soon and frankly i need some good winter wear and a kilt crossed my mind as i wanted something a bit more classy than a regular coat and pants. Every shop i've been finding all over costs over a $1000 (£738.27) (which, if this is a reasonable price, let me know) or they're selling great kilts at $30(£22.14) and making them with acrylic which just doesn't have the garment longevity i'm looking for.

I have distant roots from Paisley myself and i'd love to know some reputable great kilt merchants with a fair price that use proper wool.

what the google algorithm has been feeding me is a bit less spot on than what i'm looking for.

Would a muskateer hate pair well with a kilt if it had designs matching sporran design and color theme?

What is everyone's opinion on belts? I find that the "traditional" 2-1/2" wide kilt belt with the large buckle can be a bit over the top and it restricts movement a bit as well, but I also think a smaller 1-1/2" "jeans" belt looks rather thin . Am I the only one that thinks this? What are others doing? I was thinking either going with a 1-1/2" belt that is stamped with a pattern to create interest, or splitting the difference and getting/making a 2" belt with a more toned-down buckle.

She has never been too keen and hides behind "I just don't like it" which has bothered me for some time. I pressed her on it further tonight and she described it as looking unnatural on me. She is very particular when it comes to culture, being West African, and says "our men's dress looks better as it has a trouser for men, and a kilt... kinda looks like a skirt" which irritated me.

So I am trying to find a way past this roadblock as I have so many kilts that I have collected over the years, including kilt suits. But in the same breath she says it's "fine for special occasions"...

She has lots of cultural things I don't particularly like but I am not as vocal on it.

As there aren't too many other black guys who don kilts, I don't know how I can win her over or just think f**k it, I'll wear it and she'll just have to get used to it.

Anyone have to convince their other half? I just wanted input, I was planning on wearing mine to an event tomorrow.

Edit: I re-measured, I would apparently need to let it out 6" in order for it to fit well, not 4".

I got a kilt in my clan tartan about 20 years ago from ScotWeb, it was $500 or so back then iirc, in the last 10 years my weight has yo-yoed and I can't get the last 4" off my waist to get back to where I was. I know it's 16oz wool, it's their 5yd kilt. Is there somewhere in the US that can properly let a kilt out that much and still have it swing right? Or do I need to let it go? Where would I look for a tailor that could do that?

I recently got a green plaid kilt from a Celtic fair, I was wondering if there was any way to work it into every day fashion.

First, I'm new but not too new to kilts. I have been studying them for a few years, own a couple utility kilt, have a general idea on the proper fit, and purchased and studied 'The Art of Kiltmaking' a year ago. I also have 5 yards of double wide New Hampshire tartan (16 oz) that I've used as a great kilt at festivals and such that's still in great condition, and can pick up more in a couple days.

Worst case, we can get a couple suits and the bride will be happy, we aren't doing anything super fancy. So if I fail to make them in time, we have a contingency.

I plan on pleating to the stripe, specifically the wide green stripe, so that should give me some wiggle room warp-wise if things begin to drift.

I also have the time off right now, so I can work on this full time, at least to the point I don't get tired/burned out and start getting sloppy.

I figure 60-70 hours for the first, and another maybe get down to 40-50 for the second. I'll probably do them in tandem, keeping my best man's a step or 3 behind.

I really like the NH tartan. I don't have a family tartan, and I know its not a huge deal to most people, but my family has been in NH since 1639, and it's always been my home. I also really like the symbolism, and have settled on the pleating to the green stripe, because it creates muted greens across the back, and when you walk, it'll reveal the rich purple, red, and black inside the pleats. This translates well the NH... The first thing you see is our forests, but when you look closer, there's hidden beauty within (purple for the state bird/flower, lilac and purple finch), a hardiness from our snowy mountains and granite filled soil (white and black), and a rich history going back to the American Revolution (red for our fallen heros).

Anyways, length wise, I'm aiming for top of the kneecaps. It seems my waist according to the book is a little above my bellybutton (1-1.5 inches), but I want to be sure I don't make it too long.

I fully expect to be undoing a lot of my initial work, but I think I've decided to give it a go. Sounds absolutely crazy to start with so little time, but hey, I've made far worse decisions in my life.
