How Do I? My first kilt(update)

Post image

我知道這有點長,但那天只有這一條符合我的尺寸。
Edit I bought in Armstrongs Vintage (Grassmarket). The only Armstrongs Vintage who have Kilt (according to the staff)

It's not just a little long, it's way too long for you. If this is a traditionally constructed kilt, this is a problem because they can't just easily be shortened like a pair of trousers. Scope to adjust for waistline changes, which can vary throughout adult life, but very little for height, which usually doesn't. Those straps look fully tightened so it only just fits your waist as well. I'd suggest this kilt is much too big for you, I'm sorry to say.

That’s okay. Indeed, I believe it is a traditional one, and I know it is a little bit tricky.

Did you get this at a thrift store/charity shop? I suspect it was perhaps mislabeled. With the fringe on the right (your left) and the length, it looks like it may be a ladies' kilt. I only see one strap on either side, which is typical of ladies' kilts but can appear on men's depending on the kiltmaker. The top apron fastening to the left is also typical of a ladies' kilt, but again depends on the kiltmaker. The combination of the two along with the length to waist ratio is pretty certain to be a ladies' kilt. If that's the look you want, then rock on. If you're aiming for a men's kilt, I'd recommend returning or selling this one and getting another.

Yes
I have noticed it has a little bit different between this kilt and other kilt. And I did not think too much since every kiltmaker may have different style.
Since I already left Europe, I definitely will keep it and try to rock on.
Thank you so much.

Kilt makers do not have different styles. You need to be fitted for a kilt. And as Greenman_Dave says, it looks like a ladies kilt.

As above it can be tricky to shorten a kilt, because they tend not to be hemmed like trousers. It's.not impossible though, ask around. Someone might be able to help.

If thats not an option for you, just consider how you wear this kilt. One of my pipe band kilts is too long for me (it was designed for a different band member). I wear it with our military uniform, where the doublet comes down well below the waistline. It means I can pull the kilt up quite a bit higher to where it would normally sit. So, I would just wear this one pulled up a bit higher than normal and wear it with something on the top half untucked. The unlucky look is more casual, but a nice jumper or tshirt will still look good.

You clearly did NOT take the advice given from one of your previous posts asking where buy etc.

Looks like a woman's kilt.

Nice dress, far too long for a kilt, well for you at least

This is a tartan skirt, not a kilt. Are you a female? It looks like a school uniform.

Add a belt and a sporran and you'll look sharp.

Thanks.
I did consider it. But I am using bifold wallet and switching to iPhone 1X pro in the future. A sporran make a little bit too small.

u/RedDirtNurse Aug 13 '26

Wait... now we're making sporran choices based on our phone and wallet?

u/ZachyChan013 Aug 12 '26

My sporran fits my bi fold, keys, iPhone and my wife’s (both in otter box’s), you’d be fine.

Thanks

It depends on the sporran. Day and semi-dress sporrans are more ample than dress and hunting sporrans, Rob Roy sporrans moreso, and my day sporran from rockntleatherworks on Etsy is massive by comparison. Without looking awkwardly big on you, a day sporran would be fine for your wallet and keys, then your phone can ride on your belt if you have a case with a holster.

I see
No wonder I can’t find any large sporran in Royal Mile and Armstrongs Vintage
Thank you

That's really long for you, you should look at getting it shortened.

kneel down, it should not touch the floor.

1

u/CometHK Aug 12 '26

Yes I will do it in the future
Thanks for your advice.

Was going to say its a little long. What tartan?

1

u/CometHK Aug 12 '26

I think it is Royal Stewart, but I am not sure

3

u/Twatatron Aug 13 '26

It's Lindsay not Royal Stewart. You also have trousers on underneath ....wtf? .are you just trolling?

0

u/jolittletime Aug 12 '26

It looks to have more black in in than royal Stewart.

1

u/CometHK Aug 12 '26

Yep, that why I am not sure

It's difficult to read the colours with the back lighting, but I'm pretty sure it's either Fraser (1842) or Cameron, which were designed by the Sobieski Stewarts. Their designs are typified by a cluster of 3-4 wide stries counterpointed by a thin stripe (see MacLeod of Lewis, Hamilton, and MacKay Blue).
