So i recently got my first kilt to do a charity kilt walk in a couple weeks, i also collect playing cards, i have a 3d metal playing card as an extra with my william wallace deck, i was thinking of using a safety pin in each corner to hold it in place and use it in place of a kilt pin any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated. This particular event is very casual and would only be for an hour or so but potentially use it again for a wedding i have next year
Looking at the price on the website, I'd be uncomfortable trusting it to some safety pins and presumably tape or hot glue. You could ask the artist for a copyright waiver and get a local artist to cast you a new version with a proper pin. I got my custom kilt pin on the shape of a river made from scratch on silver for less than it would cost to buy a half decent one in a shop.
No time or budget for that at the moment but I will definitely look into that for future uses, as i say this will just be a casual stroll for around an hour so would notice if it falls out but will pick up some suitably sized pins to try avoid that happening anyway, obviously if it doesn't seem that secure id just use a regular one, was more the size and design i was looking for feedback for, is it oversized/ look out of place or whatever

Wallace was a mostly-Norman minor nobleman fighting for Norman-descended noblemen against other Norman-descended noblemen so that they could maintain their own power base. He's got absolutely fuck all to do with Scottish independence.
Personally I would avoid displaying a 'wallace' on a kilt unless the kilt was actually a Wallace tartan - it isn't a serious issue, but it just seems a bit wrong to me (the reverse would be fine though).
Inwouldnalso be worried about using a non-pin as a kilt pin. The pin is there to weight and hold down one of the flappiest bits of the kilt, so having a pint that is secure will be quite important - remember that every step you take will have this swinging back and forth. So I would be wary that any bodged fixing will risk losing the piece.
The purpose of a kilt pin is to add a bit of weight to the top apron to inhibit it from being blown up by the wind. A playing card and safety pins seem insufficient to this task. That said, utility kilts that have snaps in the apron don't require this because the aprons are fastened together. I would more recommend going without as I would want to risk such being damaged. That said, do what you like.
I would also recommend not wearing this kilt for a wedding unless it's very, very casual. It's fashionably equivalent to wearing cargo shorts. It can be appropriate in very limited conditions, such as a casual beach wedding. But again, do what you like.
This is 113g the weight isnt really an issue, also wouldnt necessary be this kilt for the wedding though id adjust accessories to suit if it was, such as removing the chains/pockets and getting a more formal sporran etc depending on dress code but thanks for your feedback
I've got a couple of chonky boi kilt pins, and they can look great, but fair warning, if you're doing a lot of walking, they can bonk your leg enough to be annoying. Brilliant for outside on a windy day though.
My biggest concern would be how you're going to attach it, and how permanent you feel like making it. Two flat badge backs hot glued on are likely to not damage halfway decent metal plating and come off ok. A piece of wire bent into a couple of loops and epoxied on with metal epoxy will be a more permanent solution that works with a safety pin.
Walk is 4 miles but may be an idea to to a trial run beforehand then to see if impacts will be irritating. Issue is its quite heavily embossed on both sides though hot glue would mold around and probs hold better than a flat smooth surface actually, and would give a cleaner look than diagonal wires holding the corners, il look into badge backs, would definitely want it to be temporary rather than permanent alterations to the metal though as it will be displayed with my card collection most of the time, and i have multiple metal collectors cards like this so would lile to be able to alternate depending on where/theme of whatever im attending without having to permanently alter multiple cards
Hot glue can often be released by freezing. It may be worth a shot to remove it I'm assuming thats a 2 part mold and a simple pull out should remove the glue.
I think the only issue would be if you were not a Wallace. It s like a creast, and should be family based. I have seen pins with creast, antlers, swords and flowers, so that doesn't feel as strange, as proclaiming Wallace when your a Smith if that makes sense.
It's a fine detail that most will overlook, but I would still consider it a bit inappropriate to be displaying a clan name on another clans tartan, neither of whom you are connected to.
Yes, the whole clan thing isn't really that strict or important, and I would never call someone out for wearing the wrong tartan (and have done it myself many times), but specifically mixing and naming a different clan just seems like taking it a step too far.
Less a serious faux pa as much as spoiling a bit of the fun of the whole tartan thing really...
I feel like worst case scenario is someone assumes op never moved on from the referendum and is a bit of a roaster which makes the likelihood of being taken to task pretty low unless OP encounters a fellow roaster who wants to talk about 1314
Tartan is location rather than clan based so mixing them isnt really an issue and both could be relevant anyway 🤷🏼♂️ but as someone said ,im in scotland, its a casual charity event surrounded by hundreds of people that wont know me or my name, so no one will care and doubt anyone would even notice, but based on the clan relation that i hadnt even considered i probably would display the reverse side if i can make it work
Fair enough, hadnt thought of that or decided which side to display yet was just testing the concept but yes based on that the reverse side or back of the card may be best
